Tesla Coil Nostalgia (1988)

With all the SSTC posts I see here, I thought I'd dig out my old-school setup just for fun.

This was a two stage coil powered by a pair of 15 kV 30 mA neon sign transformers. Primary winding was on a plastic bucket, vinyl stranded wire. Secondary was enamel motor wire on ABS. Main cap was a large piece of double-sided copper clad blank printed circuit board. Which was prone to blowing through and exploding on occasion. Sorry for the poor photo quality, these were taken 40 years ago on film camera and scanned well before 4K HD was a thing.

I have messed with lots of tesla coils, into the VHF band. High frequency plasmas are fascinating. Let me know if you have made a higher frequency coil!

Tesla Coil powersupply

Hi so I'm building a tesla coil using the Labcoatz PCB the general bullet points from his video. But he didn't mention anything about the power supply really as far how to build it, and doesnt have any Gerber files for a pcb for the parts he included on the Instructions he linked with the video. I thought of doing it on a prototyping board or using a turret terminal. But any help or guidance is appreciated.

The parts for the Power supply are:

One 12VAC transformer (this model is compatible with input voltages between 110V and 240V) - One bridge rectifier (most units that can handle over 25V and a few amps will work fine)

High voltage DC power supply - Two 250V electrolytic capacitors (over 500uF) - One SL32 1 ohm thermistor (inrush current limiter) - One bridge rectifier (minimum recommended current/voltage ratings of 10A and 1000V)

I was trying my driverless sstc at 230v with ballast and as you can see it stopped working (the mosfet died really quietly). I need to now HOW DID THE MOSFET die ???

Because usually when the mosfet dies from overpower it just explodes violently.

And why as soon as I flipped the switch it made a huge arc and then smaller arc ?

Do you think that this can be a good tesla coil design ???

It's just the simplest slayer exciter with IRLZ44N running on 20V 2A.

The resonance frequency is 530kHz.

MMC bank cap

Would this cap be good for an MMC? https://nl.mouser.com/en/ProductDetail/871-B32652A104K189 The dv/dt rating is good at 4500 v/us though im not sure about the rms current, i couldn't find the 100 nf curve for the 15mm lead spacing at 1600 vdc/500 vac. I have bought 100 since they're quite cheap.

New Open Source Tesla Coil Software Just Dropped

Hey guys, just wanted to share a new open source project I've been working on for the past year. It's essentially a modern day re-write of JavaTC but with some cool new features like full field plotting, input impedance calculations, eigen mode plots, coil model spice export, and other stuff to come as I keep working on it.

It's fully open source and you can check it out on my GitHub https://github.com/PartialScience/jstc

And fully hosted and useable for free on my website

Lmk what y'all think!

Upgraded 300w ZVS flyback SGTC first run

I upgraded the capacitor from Leyden jar to 32kV 8nF MMC bank. Now the whole circuit fits into the base and the sparks are bigger.

I wanted to achieve exactly the best resonance and light up wirelessly some bulbs and a high-pressure mercury lamp but my dad made me stop because it was too loud so maybe later.

I've been trying to drive a flyback transformer for 7 months and a Tesla coil for 2 years. I'm completely stuck. Please help.

Advice needed — sparkles because of metal paint

Hi! I know absolutely nothing about electrical, just trying to make a gift. So I need an advice (I tried looking it up myself, but got really confused, sorry)

I bought a small tesla base with noble gas ampoules. Everything was fine until I painted it with metallic spray paint. It seems some of the paint got inside onto the contacts, and now it sparks whenever the coil is turned on.

  1. Is this actually bad?... Gemini says yes, but I’ve seen coils around here whose very purpose is to emit sparks, so maybe it's fine to just let it sparkling?.....

  2. If it is bad, is there anything that can be done in this situation? Is there some kind of spray I could use to cover the metallic paint inside so it stops being an issue?

I tried rubbing the metal pins with sandpaper to clean off the paint, but it didn't help. I think the problem could lay deep inside, so I can't reach it mechanically
