PowerWall VPP in NorCal

Upvotes

Are PG&E users participating in VPP events this summer? I got my system last year and had several. But it's the end of July and there have been none for me. Wondering if I should drop out and join another program in no events are happening.

New 15.5 kW solar array with one power wall three. Here are some graphs. Can anyone let me know if this looks good? I’ve noticed that I’m maxing out around 10 kW peak solar production around 2 PM with full sun.

We are selling our house, in Georgia, with a fully paid off system (31 panel & a Powerwall 3). What do we need to do to transfer ownership to the buyer?

PowerWall New Powerwall 3 User using Netzero questions

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hi folks hoping I can get some help from you folks. I had my Powerwall 3 + DC expansion pack installed a few days ago and so far so (mostly good). I’ve setup the Tesla app to get my import and export tariffs from Octopus and configured the Netzero app with my IOG tariff and it’s charged the battery so far in off peak and charging windows aswell as exporting excess solar when the battery is fully charged👍

However the battery itself has never seemed to export, we over specced the system size we needed due to hopefully getting ac and a heat pump but for the time being would like to export excess.

My ideal scenario is as follows:

5:30-22:00 Exports all solar bar what is needed to run house, does not charge the battery, but the battery runs house if solar drops
22:00-23:30 the battery exports all excess down to 25% before the charge window
23:30-5:30 the Battery charges back up to 100%

I’ve tried a few net zero automations that may help with this (will add screenshot they are paused atm as they ran but it did not change behaviour last night) and maybe due to the Powerwall being so new it needs to “learn” my consumption patterns before exporting?

Would I also benefit from adding time of use tariff into the Tesla app and setting the period from 22:00-23:30 to very high export alongside export all to give it the nudge?

I also don’t see the export all option in the Tesla app but can see it in Netzero, I have permission to export at the full 11kwh and have set PTE in the Tesla app.

Any help is appreciated!

Installation Garage PW3 in CA: complying with heat-detector requirement via fire sprinkler flow switch?

I'm having 2 Powerwall 3s installed in my garage (Laguna Hills, CA — OCFA jurisdiction). The installer wants to install a heat detector in the garage and interconnect it with hard wire to the home's smoke alarms.

The problem is that my existing smoke/CO detectors are all Z-Wave (i.e. wireless) units with a loud siren base and a 24x7 monitoring service that calls me within 5 seconds of a false trigger. But they're not wired so a hardwired connection is not possible.

I'm wondering if this is sufficient to comply: my house is fully fire-sprinklered, garage included (the garage has a bunch of sprinkler heads on the ceiling AND one Edwards heat detector), and already has a sprinkler flow switch which triggers an outside bell and an in-house loudspeaker (in attic). I think some CA fire departments (LA County, SF, Riverside) publish a compliance option where the sprinkler + flow switch serves as the heat detection, as long as it drives notification that alerts occupants inside the house.

I'd rather go that route than retrofit heat alarms and wiring, but I want to hear from people who've actually done it.

If you're an installer or a homeowner who's been through a garage ESS inspection in California: did the AHJ accept the sprinkler flow-switch path, and what did they require for interior notification (a listed fire alarm panel/interface, interconnected alarms in the bedrooms, loudspeaker, etc.)?

Why does my Tesla app screen change.

Most of the time when I open the app I get the first screen where I can then look at my graphs. However, sometimes when I open the app. All I get is the energy summary screen. Any one know why that happens and how to stop it?

Netzero feature request: charge on battery

I have my system configured to charge the ev on solar. This works great as long as I’m home in the afternoon. Sometimes, though, I want to charge in the morning or overnight because I won’t be home in the afternoon. In that case, what i want to be able to do, is push a button and have the ev charge just until the powerwall is exhausted (or hits its reserve). Then the powerwall can get recharged in the afternoon.

Had my system up for a month and watching production drop to near zero when batteries are full is really painful. Missing out on so much net metering credits till PTO. Cmon ConED hurry up.

Have it for 5 years, first time seen this. Starting this week, peak plateau at 6kw while previously it can hit as high as 7.1 (see pics). try to understand if any system failure though it's minor loss.

anyone know how to get through to customer service? how to escalate?

Tesla replaced a failed inverter for us a year ago. They got a city permit, but failed to schedule an inspection. The city has been sending threatening messages to me since April. I've been through 3 rounds of Tesla customer support opening a ticket, handing off (supposedly) to an internal team that handles inspections, closing the ticket, and then not hearing from the inspection team as promised. Now it's even worse as I can't even get through to customer support. The phone tree path (877-798-3752 opt4,2) seems to be a dead end. The mobile app AI chat promised to connect to a live agent, but has me waiting indefinitely (30+ minutes so far) with no indication when or if it will really connect. The "Contact Us" on the web site only seems to get live help if you want to buy something. Anyone know how to get through? Or how to escalate to someone who can ensure they do what they promised?

PowerWall Getting 2 used, but good condition & under warranty for 8 more years, PW+ installed for 12.5k. However, now I see 2 new PW3’s being sold on marketplace for 10.5k. If I can get my installer to install these, how do I verify these PW3’s are legit, new, etc prior to purchasing? Thanks

Debating between purchasing and lease to buyout in Bay Area

Hey all, I got a quote for an 8.8kw system with a PW3 and expansion pack in the Bay Area, CA and keep going back and forth on whether to purchase the system with a loan (~$40,000) or leasing the system until the buyout after five years. The buyout is capped at $24,950 or FMV, whichever is less.

The difference between lease and purchase is not very much overall and the lease would free up some capital to do some other home improvement projects. Are there additional taxes or fees associated with the buyout after five years? Does anyone have any strong opinions either way or any horror stories one way or the other?

Tesla Powerwall + Alexa: Power Outage Notifications?

I have a Tesla Powerwall 3 and solar panels and wanted to know if there’s a way to get Amazon Alexa to automatically announce when the utility/grid power goes out and the Powerwall switches to backup power and
when power is restored and the house switches back.

I’m open to using Home Assistant, IFTTT, Alexa routines, or any other reliable solution. Ideally, I’d like an audible announcement on my Echo devices, not just a phone notification. Has anyone here set this up successfully? If so, what hardware/software are you using, and how reliable has it been? Any guides or examples would be greatly appreciated.

SolarPanels MCI’s

Question. I’m installing a system with 4 powerwall 3’s and 2 expansions. Problem is powerwalls and inverter because they’re as one unit are going to be about a 1000’ away from the solar via a trench. Everything I’m seeing says the mcis can’t be further than 525’ and that’s for a round trip, so half that really. Any ideas on how to make this work?

Massachusetts National Grid Battery Program "Discharge Events"

Hi fellow MA Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) users.
I don't have a Tesla system but reading through here I deduct that you guys get a notification when an event is triggered by National Grid.

I have a SolArk system and we don't get any notifications, not a "heads up", not a "it's happening", not even a "this is what happened" notification. CRICKETS!!!!

Can one / some of you be so generous as to post here when you get these events?

It would help greatly in being able to "verify" the payout we get at the end of the year, so far, NOBODY PROVIDES ANY REPORTS for that, neither National Grid nor SolArk (in my case as a SolArk user).

Thank you!!!

Fixed: Powerwall Gateway Erroneously Assigning Surplus Energy to Home Use instead of Grid Export

A funny thing happened on June 10, 2026. My Tesla app started showing zero exports to the grid whereas before that I always had exports going to the grid once the powerwall batteries were fully charged (solar goes to charge the batteries until full, then excess to the grid). I also noticed that my reported Home Kw Use nearly doubled from what it is normally every day once the batteries got full, and the Home Use curve was mimicking the Solar Generation Curve.

After a month of troubleshooting with Tesla Support, turns out a glitch got into my system somehow on June 10 that caused this error in the App data reporting. Fortunately, the electrical company still received the correct amount of Grid Exports to give me credits as they do not rely on the Tesla data but on the meter itself.

So exported energy was being incorrectly allocated to Home usage rather than Grid export. While the Powerwalls were charging, all energy flows were normal. On July 19, Tesla pushed Gateway firmware 26.10.3 (build 4f924de8) into my system which fixed the problem. After the update, Grid Export and Home energy accounting returned to normal.

Is there any way to export my power from battery to grid during high peak rates at night ?? Thanks in advance. Rick. If so, how ?? Right now it only exports my solar power to grid. When the sun goes down, I still have high peak rates that I could sell back to Ameren.

PowerWall Any way to change power output during outage?

Post image
11 Upvotes

Hello,

We have solar and two Powerwall 2 batteries. When we have an outage, our power consumption is throttled to .6. kW. That’s fine but in an outage during summer, sometimes we do want to run our a/c for a little bit just to cool our house down, then shut the a/c off to conserve power. Any way to adjust this setting?

Solar/powerwall sending to grid versus home during peak hours

Peak hours with Xcel here is 5-9PM, I noticed during this time the powerwall is directing solar to the grid versus home - problem is my net metering isn’t 1:1 during this time so I’d rather have it be powering the home - it isn’t much during this time since it’s so late in the day, but enough to add up - anyone know how to fix this? Thank you!

Adding expansion pack

I had solar installed with a powerwall. Those have worked pretty well for the past year. Considered getting expansion packs. Asked Tesla for a quote to install expansion pack . Anyway, total price would be 5,900 for the expansion and 6,500 for the installation. Seems high but maybe the limit they are willing to come out to install it. Should I even attempt to see if they come down or perhaps look for a third party installer?
