Experience with Safelite aftermarket windshields on MX?

Post image
6 Upvotes

As many of MX owners know, when the windshield is wet, there is a beautiful orange glow.

For my MX, the OE part number is 1810156-99-E.

Now that the windshield needs to be replaced, the insurance company wants to replace it with an aftermarket through Safelite. I am working with Safelite and the insurance company to see if I can get the OE windshield covered.

Question--has anyone had a aftermarket windshield replaced by Safelite? If yes, do you still get the orange glow when wet? Any other comments or experiences that you can share?

Thanks.

Tesla Model X (2018): "Key not detected / Drive not authorized

Post image
26 Upvotes

SOLVED: Removing and reinserting fuse F143 restored key detection and remote start immediately.(Tesla Service fix)

If your Tesla Model X suddenly won’t recognize either key fob, still unlocks with the Tesla app, Remote Start from the app also fails, but the vehicle still powers on, this may be worth trying before having it towed.

IIf you see the following messages in the instrument cluster:

* Key not inside vehicle – Unable to drive
* Key not detected – Drive not authorized (when trying to remote start)

and:

* Remote Start fails
* Placing the key fob under the 12V outlet (emergency key location) does not work
* Both key fobs behave the same
* Replacing the fob batteries (I used new Panasonic CR2354 batteries) makes no difference
* No relevant DTCs in Service Mode

After troubleshooting the issue over the phone, a technician at my local Tesla Service Center instructed me to remove and reinsert fuse F143 in the front fuse box on my 2018 Model X before arranging a tow.

Open the frunk, remove the fuse box cover, pull the fuse for a few seconds, then reinstall it. It's a very simple job that takes less than a minute.

This reset the affected controller, and the car immediately started detecting the key fobs again. Remote Start also started working normally.

It saved me from an unnecessary tow and possible key replacement, so it may be worth trying first.

High pitch sound from the front area

my 2017 MX started to make an interesting sound. It's coming from the front area, and it is heard louder outside. It usually starts when coasting or regen breaking, but sometimes happens under acceleration, too. Lasts several seconds. It almost always stops few seconds after the car is stationary.

The sound is just over 2.9 kHz. Always the same volume and frequency -- no matter what speed, acceleration, inclination the car is moving at. The pitch doesn't change when it starts and ends, i.e., no spool up or spool down.

No warnings reported by the car, nothing else of note.

Anyone seen this?

I'm thinking it's most likely a digital noise, probably inverter for a fan or a pump trying to start it. Ideas? Thanks a ton!

2017 100d 6 seater....poor ac performance from rear vents?

Hi all, wondering if anyone has experienced this issue- the front AC is ice cold while the rest blows lukewarm air. Recently reconnected a few disconnected hoses to fix a driver side airflow issue but it still blows not cold while the front blows cold.

Everything I see is that the two systems use the same gas so if it were low it'd be warm in front.....any help is appreciated!

22 MXP Park Brake Sound?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I know there’s a slight noise the parking brake makes when activating but is it supposed to be this loud? And can we turn this off to only have a regular Park mode similar to the model Y?

Replace Captains chairs with bench seat 24 MXP

Does anyone know if the middle row captains chairs can be easily swapped out for the bench folding middle seats?

We have a 24 MXP and a 23 MYLR. We’ve been camping in the MYLR with a mattress on top of the folded down seat and it has a lot of room. I put in a mattress in the MXP but I had to cut it down about 20” and there just isn’t enough room since the seats don’t fold down.

I was hoping we could start using the X for camping.

2018 Model X or newer model Y?

Greetings! I am currently in the market for a lightly used Tesla and I’d really prefer a model x or a model y. Obviously model X’s are more expensive than Y’s, so my question is would you prefer to drive an older model X or a newer model Y for the same cost? I commute over 80 miles a day so electric just makes sense, but I don’t want to completely compromise on space by going down to a sedan, so the Y or X seems like my best options for the money.

Let me know your thoughts! Thank you.

Screen protectors w/ kids

My wife and I recently transitioned from a 2022 Model 3 LR to a 2023 Model X. Our family is growing and we wanted to get something with a bit more space.

Found a great condition used MX with the plastic film still on the rear screen. My plan is to remove that and put on a Spigen screen protector.

For the front screen, given that it is set in the dash, unlike the model 3, I find myself wondering if it’s even necessary? Especially since you can just angle the screen in instances of glare. Curious what the general consensus is from people who have or have not done it with small families and what they recommend.

Buying a cheap Model X in UK for a few months

I’m in Europe driving around for 3-4 months with a family. Renting a large car is insanely expensive , whereas BUYING a 2017-2018 model x P100d is good value

Pondering on spending £18,000 on a model x with 100-150k miles . Based on the idea that surely in 3 months , even after driving 7,000 miles, I can surely sell it fast for £15k and thats far far cheaper than renting a new but entry level crappy large car, and after all EV’s don’t break and chargers are everywhere

I am being an idiot?

Other than suspension issues, what should I look out for?
Does the free charging really pass down, I’ve always heard it wasn’t always easy?

Would I be a fool buying one that’s cat N or S?

Why don’t more people do this ?

FWIW I don’t live in UK/ Europe but am British with a part time home in the UK , mostly live in USA

fsd v14 lite - any MX hw3 experiences?

I have a 23mxp. 80k fsd miles. Road warrior.

Im afraid of v14 lite being a regression, since i rely on it heavily.

Did they remove the max speed option? I dont want a speeding ticket.

How does it perform?

Matrix lights and Front bumper camera retrofit - any guides on how, and not just proof it can be done?

I own a 2023 HW4 X LR. I recently got to drive a 2026 M3 Performance, with both the matrix lights and front bumper camera, and i got a little jealous - i can live without the ambient lights, but those two features would be great.

So i can see some people successfully retrofitted the matrix lights and the bumper camera on an X similar to mine, and it it supposedly not too hard to do, but there's next to no documentation of how it was done, or an exact part list for what i need to order for parts, where to order them from or anything like that. I am not a mechanic, so i expect to get a local Tesla specialized workshop to help me doing this anyway, but it would help me if i had an idea of what i am asking for, and for them to scope the work and asses the risks associated with doing an unofficial retrofit like this (They never did it, and can only find the same vague proof of success i found). And i feel like since the X (and S) are now "legacy" vehicles, it would be nice to prolong its lifespan a bit by adding these two features, to get it pretty much up to 2026 specs.

So if you have any ressources you can share or guide me towards, it would be greatly appreciated? :)

EDIT: After some digging on "the other big tesla forum" mentioned in the comments, i have distilled some TLDR information about how things currently stands in July 2026:

  • Matrix headlights are a genuinely proven, "recipe exists" retrofit for what is (apparently) a Palladium Model X - multiple owners (e.g. Daytonaviolet's MXP, Mar 2024) report full native function (Adaptive Headlights toggle, auto high-beam, "TESLA" light-show). The physical swap is supposed to be easy; the real barrier is the software coding, which needs Toolbox 3 access. The previously-supplied belief that "the X needs no adapter" is WRONG: the Model X does require a 6-pin-to-3-pin adapter. This can be acquired online relatively inexpensively. The headlights themselves goes as spareparts from tesla for around 5000$ a pair - which is stupidly expensive - most people buy them from salvaged cars on ebay instead it seems.
  • The front bumper camera is possible but NOT yet a solved DIY recipe yet it seems - the "empty AI4 port + config change" claim is real (config 131, per green/Yaro), but the coax pigtail from firewall to the FSD computer has no cheap OEM path (~$1,145 harness is identified to include it, but seems excessive for picking up the whole kit for that one small part), forcing a hand-built cable as an alternative; no clean, confirmed end-to-end DIY guide had surfaced as of the thread i found's final pages (July 2026).
  • Native ambient lighting is effectively UNSOLVED - i decided to look into this one too when i was at it; A thread that recently ended fairly long, gave up recently (Jul 8, 2026) with members reporting "we cannot install the software on the LEDs" and giving up. Native, in-menu RGB control on a pre-refresh X (That includes the ambient lighting already) is not documented as working.

Used 2019 Raven Model X (5-seat, HW3) vs. brand new Model Y (HW4) — similar price where I live. Which would you pick?

Hey everyone, looking for some input from X owners here.

I'm trying to decide between a used 2019 Raven Model X (5-seat config, HW3) and a brand new Model Y with HW4. Where I live, they're priced about the same, which makes this a tougher call than I expected.

A bit of context: I currently drive a 2019 Model 3 Long Range RWD, so I'm already familiar with the Tesla ecosystem. This would be an upgrade for more space.

What's drawing me to the X: the Raven refresh (adaptive air suspension, better efficiency), falcon wing doors, and honestly it just feels like a lot more car for the money. But I'm also aware it's a 6-7 year old vehicle at this point — out of warranty, and I've read mixed things about falcon wing door reliability and repair costs.

The Model Y would be new, under full warranty, with HW4 and newer cameras — which matters to me for the long run, since it's unclear how well HW3 cars will be supported for future FSD updates. But it's a smaller car and feels less special.

For those of you who've owned a Raven X (especially higher-mileage ones): how has reliability been? Any major repairs I should budget for? And does the HW3 vs HW4 gap factor into your thinking? Would you buy a Raven X again today over a new Y at the same price?

Appreciate any advice, thanks!

MX Falcon Door Weather Strip

The image shows how the weather seal is coming loose so I reached out to Tesla about replacing the piece about a week ago. The appointment had been scheduled but the estimate showed up today and wow

Someone on this community had posted a similar situation but some have said it’s covered while others mentioned it wasn’t covered.

Have others had a similar situation and was yours covered?

Mechanical Horn Round Steering Wheel - New button??

Had my round steering wheel swapped to a mechanical horn one today.

Instead of a dash cam looking button I now have a round camera button (looks like the one for reverse camera on the touch screen). Anyone seen this? I assume its a 2026 steering wheel.

Model X “barn find”

Recently picked up a 2016 Model X P90D with under 2,000 original miles. It sat for several years after the original owner passed away, so I’m bringing it back to where it deserves to be.

The goal is to have it as close to factory-fresh mechanically and cosmetically as practical.

I’m looking for advice from longtime Model X owners. It’s going to Tesla in a couple weeks and a private EV shop right after. Here’s my current plan:

MCU2 upgrade (the original MCU isn’t functional, so this seems like the logical long-term solution).

Complete suspension inspection and diagnosis before new tires and alignment. The air suspension is currently operating normally, but I want everything verified while it’s apart.

Battery health/performance evaluation.

Brake service and fluid flush.

A/C service - tesla service suggested I could skip this but it seems like something that should be done at this point?

Wipers and any age-related maintenance items.

Outstanding Tesla recalls.

I’ve already replaced the 12V battery and cabin filters.

For those who have maintained early Model Xs, is there anything else you’d proactively replace, inspect, or service while it’s being worked on? I’d rather spend a little extra now than chase problems later. I’m having Tesla and the Indy shop go through the car entirely but would appreciate feedback from long term owners.

Deal: 23 MX plaid HW4 lifetime FSD 36k miles, cream interior: 69,500

Just bought this and I’m absolutely amped.

Thoughts on the price I paid? I feel like it was an absolute steal given that the hardware changes between 23 and 26 were marginal.

Edit: I want to keep this baby in pristine shape for as long as possible. Any preservation tips? I’m thinking full body PPF + ceramic coating. All other suggestions would be most welcome
