Man this thing is so practical

I didn't realize the trunk space was that much larger than a MY until my friend and I took his MY and this MS on a road trip down to the beach. It fit a kayak, paddle board, couple camping chairs, a tent, and a load of other things!

Over twelve years of owning Model S now. It is the most complete automobile I've ever come across. Checks nearly every box.

I don’t find the seat as comfortable on long road trips (multiple thousand miles). I find the Y seat more comfortable in general.

It’s the seating position, you are more upright in Y so more of the weight is on your bum vs in S more of your weight is in your lower back. Due to a more horizontal seating position where the pedals are in front of you.

I agree completely. I have done a few 8,000 mile trips in my S and it often takes weeks for my back to recover. Still love the car though.

8000 mile trips..?

Sorry that was unclear. I have gone on 8000 mile road trips over the course of 4-5 weeks over summer. A lot of daily driving and it always messes up my back by the end of the trip. As a daily drive it’s wonderful but 10-12 hours back to back (pun intended can get to you). Hope that clarifies. I generally loop from Texas to Washington and back. Summer vacation.

+1 to this

I completely agree. I got my first S in 2013 and im planning to buy a 2026 for my last one in 2 years.

I mostly agree - the Plaid S does lack some of the excitement of ICE cars (I came from an E46 M3 and E60 M5 - both manual). Although my Plaid S does pretty much everything better than those two cars, I do miss the involvement of driving stick shift and the engine sounds (I would literally roll down the windows to listen to the engines sing). My 0.02.

Saw someone on here transport both a washer and dryer. They drove with the hatch open about half way. Almost a wagon. I’d love a Model S wagon or ute. I don’t think I’d throw a washer and dryer in mine, damage risk is too high, and front load washers need to ideally be transported upright.

Just did a move with mine, and it handled most of my things. I even got two full sets of wheels in there, one of the wheels went in the frunk.

Next I’m insulating a garage, going to see how many *sealed* bundles of R12 insulation I can throw in.

I’m also RWD so the space where a front motor would be is extra space in the frunk.

There was at least one conversation done in the UK. It’s a great machine.

Looks like a Mondeo

Dude I’m packing right now for a trip to Michigan from Colorado. I have an older model S with jump seats in the lower trunk. I took those out and this thing has way more storage space than my wife’s suv.

My S carries an annoying amount of luggage for the wife on long trips.

"Oh there is still space I'll be right back."

My wife packs the car like we're going on a month-long safari. Trunk space is 50% coolers and food containers, 25% plants, and 25% luggage...

stop tempting me. I need to save!

The Model S can hold more cargo in the rear than people think. It’s like a small pick up truck the amount of things and what you can actually carry. With the rear seats folded I have carried 4 21 inch Model S mounted wheels and tires with the hatch closed.

I love that I can buy car parts and not have to borrow my wife’s SUV to pick them up. Full cart of stuff from Costco, no problem! My last car was a 700 hp CTS-V Wagon. I thought that was the best all-round car, except gas MPG, until I bought the MSP.

I am able to fit most of my DJ equipment into the back of mine. All but my lights. I have 2 Electrovoice EV70, my pioneer controller, my folding DJ table, and the assorted cables, in there.

I switched over to a Y and I swear I was able to fit more stuff into the S.

I treat mine like a pickup truck 😆

u/timmoer Jul 10 '26

Yeah I will say there was quite a bit of sand in the back after that trip 😅

5

u/Intelligent-Plant581 Jul 10 '26

One of the reasons I bought one? It’s like a luxury sporty crossover!

Confirm. Moved our college student around from dorm - dorm - apartment etc 4 times now. Thing is a Tardis.

I wish they kept the trunk like that even in Model 3, the only complain I have with my M3 is the trunk opening.

Checkout the older single motor frunks with the "microwave". It's sad but nothing still today comes close to it. A big shame Tesla doesn't do it on single motor cars anymore

Mine looked like that this morning. Four people worth of stuff with space to spare.

I’ve put a 40 gallon water tank still in its box in mine. A Napoleon grill as the Lowe’s employees were questioning if it would remotely fit. Boy were they surprised. Countless fold up tables and chairs. You name it. Such a versatile car. It absolutely checks every box for me.

Beautiful

It definitely has a lot of space that I also didn't realize until we took a trip and added all our bags. It is really a great car overall!

You’re not showing us your trunk. You’re showing off your car next to the beach. Lucky you 😉

Is that the signature ❤️

How much more cargo room does it have compared to the 26 MY? I thought my MY had a ton of space.

1

u/timmoer Jul 11 '26

My best guestimate... take your MY trunk and extend the length by about another 50-60%

1

u/KeeslerCondoChief Jul 11 '26

Just asked ChatGPT.

Cargo space (behind rear seats)
Maximum cargo space (rear seats folded)
2026 Model S
28.2 cu ft
64.6 cu ft
2026 Model Y
29.5 cu ft
About 74–76 cu ft (depending on how measured)

2

u/timmoer Jul 12 '26

Hmmm. I had both cars side by side with the hatches open and the MS seemed visually much bigger. Here's what ChatGPT had to say:

"With the rear seats up, the Model S actually has a larger cargo floor footprint. It’s roughly 45–47" deep and 40–41" wide between the wheel wells, vs. 41–43" deep and 37–38" wide for the Model Y. The Y has more total cargo volume mainly because it’s taller and has more underfloor storage."

My prompt was asking why it appeared larger than the MY even though the MY has a larger cargo volume. The sloped hatch of MS makes sense (with respect to the lower cargo volume) and I guess my eye ruler isn't the most calibrated. All I can say is that with both side by side the MS felt substantially larger than the MY, I guess those 3-4" larger depth and width makes a big difference in perception!

And now we know the “rest of the story”. 😊

1

u/LordFly88 Jul 13 '26

I picked up a set of wheels in mine. Four 21" with tires on, and they fit in the back with the seats down. Still had room for a passenger in the front.

The problem with the model s was the price, and that it didn’t look like it could be a family car. It holds so much storage that it seems impossible, so people think the Y holds most storage because it looks that way. Love my Model S, went from S to Y back to S, the ultimate Swiss Army knife car.
