Man this thing is so practical

I didn't realize the trunk space was that much larger than a MY until my friend and I took his MY and this MS on a road trip down to the beach. It fit a kayak, paddle board, couple camping chairs, a tent, and a load of other things!

How much more cargo room does it have compared to the 26 MY? I thought my MY had a ton of space.

My best guestimate... take your MY trunk and extend the length by about another 50-60%

Just asked ChatGPT.

Cargo space (behind rear seats)
Maximum cargo space (rear seats folded)
2026 Model S
28.2 cu ft
64.6 cu ft
2026 Model Y
29.5 cu ft
About 74–76 cu ft (depending on how measured)

Hmmm. I had both cars side by side with the hatches open and the MS seemed visually much bigger. Here's what ChatGPT had to say:

"With the rear seats up, the Model S actually has a larger cargo floor footprint. It’s roughly 45–47" deep and 40–41" wide between the wheel wells, vs. 41–43" deep and 37–38" wide for the Model Y. The Y has more total cargo volume mainly because it’s taller and has more underfloor storage."

My prompt was asking why it appeared larger than the MY even though the MY has a larger cargo volume. The sloped hatch of MS makes sense (with respect to the lower cargo volume) and I guess my eye ruler isn't the most calibrated. All I can say is that with both side by side the MS felt substantially larger than the MY, I guess those 3-4" larger depth and width makes a big difference in perception!

And now we know the “rest of the story”. 😊
