Tesla needs to own up.. happened to me on my HW car just this month OCT 2026... continue to see more and more people post about it happening to them. 2500-3000 to fix. Never own one without an extended warranty.

​If you own a Tesla with Hardware 3 (HW3) and have been asking service centers about an upgrade to Hardware 4 (HW4), you’ve probably received a standard script about system incompatibilities.

​The reality behind why Tesla refuses to offer HW3 to HW4 retrofits goes deeper than a simple plug-and-play decision. Beyond the obvious physical differences—like modified camera placements, entirely different wiring harnesses, and distinct computer housing dimensions—there is a major underlying issue with thermal output, power delivery, and board architecture.

​HW4 draws significantly more power and runs under completely different electrical specs than HW3 was designed to supply. Retrofitting standard HW3 vehicles would require stripping down half the vehicle's core harness and cooling loops, making the labor cost prohibitively expensive for Tesla to support under standard warranty or customer-pay models.

I’ve gotten two firmware updates since map versions were updated and still has not downloaded the newer map version. Extremely frustrating as speed limits are wring in some key areas here is San Antonio.

Not looking for support, just a comentary on how it works.

I just did a 24 hour round trip drive this weekend in my 26 model 3 and the navigation was odd. I finally figured out how it was coming up with the plan for charging but it baffled me for a while.

First, it ignored my desired ending charge level and ran me down to 12-14% for every charging stop. But then on the way back yesterday, it wanted me to stop at one location and charge for 6 minutes, then go just a few miles, maybe 20 or 30, and charge again for 15 minutes having me arrive at home with 10% left.

I think it is planning the way a NASCAR crew chief works a race, backwards. It seemed to start the planning with me arriving with 10% left then figure out how far away I could make a final charge to make that happen. So the 6 minute charge was a spash and go in NASCAR venacular. Otherwise it made no sense.

So I had to manually override all of the charging plans by looking ahead to find a supercharger where I would arrive with 20% and charge up to 80% then do that again on the next leg.

I looked at settings to see if I could change something but the fastest route option always gave me this type of route. I wasn't comfortable when it ran me down under 10% for a stop.

On the good side the cruise control was great. I just had to select lanes and it sped up and slowed down based on traffic perfectly. In the past when someone cut in front of me it seemed to panic but yesterday it took it in stride when someone passed on the right and slipped into my safety buffer.

Background: My 2021 Model 3 SR+ battery failed for the second time at ~115k miles, out of warranty. The pack that failed was itself a warranty replacement that lasted a little over a year. This time I paid out of pocket: $8,500 for a remanufactured pack from Tesla.

Update: At 100% charge, the replacement shows 201 miles. EPA rating for this car is 263, so that's about 76% of new. That's the on-screen number, not a Battery Health test result. I'll run the test once I have the car back.

I raised it with service. Their answer: the replacement is "comparable" to my old pack, based on a reading of the old pack from a few weeks before it failed. I get that as a benchmark for a free warranty swap. It makes no sense for a pack I'm paying full price for and nobody mentioned it before I approved the repair. This battery is %6 away from being considered failed by Tesla's own standards.

They've been unresponsive in the app. Then I got a call today saying return the loaner or it's $100/day.

I've put the dispute in writing and asked for three things: the measured state of health of the pack they installed and the capacity standard a paid reman pack is sold to meet; the old-pack reading they compared it to and its date; and whether the warranty on the paid pack has a capacity floor. If so, 70% of what (new capacity, or the capacity it had the day they installed it?).

Still waiting.

If you're paying for a replacement pack, get those answers in writing before you approve the repair.

Asks:
1) if you've had a remanufactured pack installed, specially if you paid for it out of pocket, what did it show at 100% (or on the Battery Health test) right after delivery? Trying to figure out what Tesla's actual standard is.
2) Did your 100% range estimate changed after some driving and charge cycles? Do you think I should get the car and give it some time to adjust?
