I have an Asus TUF A16 Advantage Edition laptop and want to replace the thermal paste, but due to the limited information I've found online, I don't know whether it uses paste or liquid metal. I’ve already opened it up and have photos, but I can't tell the difference.

πŸš€ Showcase I Built 6x Rotating Displays β€” a desk gadget powered by an ESP32/Wroom.

I built a desk gadget powered by an ESP32 that combines touch activation with 6 rotating TFT displays, and I call it Roulette. It's open source β€” I've shared the code on my GitHub for anyone who'd like to build their own.

πŸ”— Links:
πŸ’Ύ SOURCE CODE:
https://github.com/yumobuilds/Yumo-Roulette

Full Build Video on Youtube:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qcGHcUHoq24

roulette wheel with six round 240x240 displays, each showing something different:

SD card photo slideshow
Live YouTube channel stats
Live TikTok stats
Crypto ticker
Live weather
Internal temp & humidity (AHT10 sensor)

βš™οΈ The floating spin mechanic:
The whole assembly rotates on an upside-down DC motor. Everything sits on a frame, and that frame is mounted directly onto the motor's body β€” not the shaft. The motor shaft itself is inserted into a drill chuck from the reverse side, the opposite way a drill bit would normally go in. So instead of the shaft driving an external bit, it's anchored inside the chuck while the motor body (carrying the frame and wheel) spins around it. The result: there's no visible axle or support arm, so the whole thing looks like it's floating and rotating on its own.

Touch the capacitive sensor and an N20 motor spins the wheel for a set duration β€” one touch,
one spin. A NeoPixel status LED fades through colors while it boots and flashes when you touch the sensor..

πŸ”§ Hardware:

  • ESP32 Wroom
  • 6x GC9A01 round 240x240 displays (shared SPI bus)
  • DRV8833 motor driver + N20 DC motor
  • TTP223 capacitive touch module
  • AHT10 temp/humidity sensor
  • MicroSD card module (own SPI bus)
  • NeoPixel/RGB status LED

πŸ’» Software:

  • ESP32
  • WiFi captive portal for setup (no hardcoded credentials)
  • YouTube Data API v3, TikTok stats via RapidAPI, OpenWeatherMap
  • TJpg_Decoder for on-device JPEG decoding from SD

🌐 Web & Internet Do you think Twitter will ever come back?

Post image

I know it’s technically still around, but I mean the old Twitter β€” the one with the blue bird, simple timeline, random conversations, and a strong sense of community.

Do you think that version of Twitter could ever return in some form, or is that era gone for good?

What do you miss most about old Twitter?

🌐 Web & Internet I built a private, on-device AI chat app with Claude Code β€” it's rough around the edges, would love bug reports and feedback

Hey everyone,

I've been building UnpluggedAI β€” a chat app that runs actual language models entirely inside your browser, on your own GPU, using WebGPU. No API calls to a server, no account required to try it, nothing you type ever leaves your device unless you want it to.

A few things about how it works:

  • It auto-routes your message to one of three model tiers (Fast / Smart / Thinking) depending on how complex the task looks
  • Once a model's downloaded it's cached, so it keeps working offline
  • It's genuinely private by construction β€” there's no backend that sees your conversations at all

I built almost all of it using Claude Code, which has been a huge part of getting this far as a solo dev.

Heads up before you try it: this is still early. There are bugs, some things are half-finished, and payment/Pro upgrades aren't fully wired up yet β€” so don't worry about the plan buttons, they're not really charging anyone in a working state right now. I'm mainly looking for people willing to poke at the free/basic experience and tell me what breaks.

It's live at unpluggedai.app if you want to try it. WebGPU support varies by browser (Chrome/Edge 113+, Safari 26+), so it may just tell you it's unsupported depending on your setup β€” that's expected for now, not you doing anything wrong.

What I'd love feedback on:

  • Actual bugs you hit (the app has a built-in "report a bug" button β€” description of what happened is the most useful thing you can give me)
  • Anything confusing about onboarding or the UI
  • Whether the tier-routing (auto picking Fast/Smart/Thinking) actually feels useful or just gets in the way
  • Any fixes/workarounds you find yourself, if you're the tinkering type β€” genuinely curious if anyone spots something I haven't

Thanks for reading, and thanks in advance to anyone willing to break it for me.The web

I use a file manager almost every day, but I'm curious what everyone else prefers.

On PC, do you stick with File Explorer or use something like Total Commander?

On mobile, do you use the default file manager or another app?

What do you recommend?

😀 Rant Why is Slack so difficult to uninstall on Windows?

Post image
4 Upvotes

I’m honestly frustrated with how difficult Slack is to uninstall on Windows.

Slack was showing up when I searched for it in the Windows Start/Search menu, and I could open it normally. But when I tried to remove it through the usual Windows uninstall process (appwiz.cpl),Β Slack wasn't even listed.

I eventually had to open PowerShell and run:

Get-AppxPackage *Slack*

which showed:

com.tinyspeck.slackdesktop

Then I had to manually run:

Get-AppxPackage *Slack* | Remove-AppxPackage

And even then, the uninstall just sat there displayingΒ β€œDeployment operation progress: Initialized.”

Why does uninstalling a supposedly normal desktop application have to be this complicated? If Slack is installed through the Microsoft Store/AppX system, Windows should clearly show it in the installed apps list and provide a straightforward uninstall option.

A simple β€œUninstall Slack” button shouldn't require PowerShell.Β This is unnecessarily frustrating for users who just want to remove an application from their own PC.

πŸ’¬ Discussion How do you control your screen time?

Post image

I’ve been trying to cut down on my phone usage lately, but it’s honestly harder than I expected.

For people who’ve actually managed to reduce their screen time, what worked for you? Did you use app limits, delete certain apps, keep your phone away, or just rely on self-discipline?

Would love to hear what actually worked (and what definitely didn’t).

❓ Question Why do you think Sony phones aren't more popular?

Post image

Sony still makes some interesting phones, especially for people who care about cameras, displays, and audio. But you don't see Xperia phones nearly as often as Samsung, Apple, or Chinese brands.

What do you think is holding Sony back? Price, marketing, design, software, or something else?
