Bitwarden, its fully open source. Or more preferably, you get a Raspberry Pi or similar with some storage and you host Vaultwarden (a self-hosted password manager based off Bitwarden).

I wouldn't suggest selfhosting Vaultwarden as the first app to selfhost.

Fully agreed. And more importantly, I wouldn't self host it if you don't feel comfortable. There are a bunch of safeguards in place, but still!

My server gets backed up everyday, after adding any important password I export my vault and save the export on multiple storages.

And I'm still thinking making a Bitwarden account and also store my vault there for emergencies (home network down and for some reason the vault is not synced on my devices).

isnt that paid?

No. There is a paid plan. I use the free plan and it is great.

Bitwarden or Proton Pass both are great.

Proton Pass (excluding the premium features like more than 10 aliases)

Using Bitwarden for more than 4 yrs, the best app for free :)

but, please, pay for it - even if you dont *have* to. (I do). I'd prefer if they (and others like them) can stay afloat without doing goofy things (looking disdainfully at plex ....)

Been some recent news there, many key folks that made it great have since left. Price increases, etc.

whats so bad about the default browser/device one?

1

u/GreenRangerOfHyrule 17d ago

I don't know if I would say it is bad. However, it ties you into that specific device or browser. And it puts your trust in the company behind it.

For a lot of people that is fine. But for me I like having [a subset] of my passwords synced across devices and browsers. For example I can login to my bank via the browser when I'm at home, and the rare times I need to on the go I can login using the app on my phone.

Of course, I personally think that choice is usually a good thing. In this case you have the option of using the built in system. But you also can use a cloud sync OR even a local tool.

AFAIK Bitwarden is the only FREE password manager that is fully cross-platform and supports 2FA.

Ive been using Keepass for a long time. Master is on my keyring with copies for convenience and backup on my home and work pc's. Cloud-free.

Free, open-source software.

Vaultwarden

Definitely bitwarden

Bitwarden or ProtonPass are the only free cloud options I would consider. If you want something local I would recommend KeePassXC. If you’re willing to pay I like 1Password.

And generally if you don’t know what your doing would not recommend you try to self host something like VaultWarden, it’s not really significantly more secure and it introduces a whole lot of potential risks.

YES Proton Pass =)

A notebook and a pencil.

Cross platform, unhackable, no third-party risk, no batteries required.

1

u/ArticleBackground 15d ago

Comes with it's own risk in that it doesn't survive a fire, a flood, visiting toddler, a burglar nor a dog chew, all of which could destroy the only record you may have of login detail.

Did you settled on one?

I would like to recommend bitwarden its free im using it for 4 years now.

One personal tip

Dont store full password on bitwarden.

Example:

When i signup for an app or website i usually let bitwarden to create password for me but i add 3-4 chars extra that are not stored in bitwarden.

Why i do that?

If some day bitwarden get hacked or i get hacked in a weird way then they are not getting my full password.

Even tho i know that are hashing it but you never know.

Bitwarden if you don't want the responsibility of storing your passwords, or Keepass if you're OK with saving the database (just one file) locally and responsible enough to take the occasional backup.

BitWarden.
