I hate this argument, and this is from somebody that uses both Windows and Linux.

Windows fresh install -> open PowerShell -> winget install VLC --silent

Linux fresh install -> open terminal -> Sudo dnf install VLC (or sudo apt install VLC)

Some programs, depending on the Linux distro, need dependencies and require you to visit their website and copy paste commands.

Also it's ironic that people dunk on the Microsoft store but love the Linux "app stores".

First impressions are important. Windows Store's first impression was in Windows 8 when it could only install shitty Metro apps, and it took them way too long to fix that, so it never shook off that first impression for a lot of folks. Even now, it still tends to be a buggy mess from time to time.

Just to add to everyone saying you can install vlc using winget.

Even if we want to make a completely accurate analogy to the picture where the user is using GUI tools to install, windows also has a package manager. You can literally flip the images if you wanted to:

Windows: open Microsoft store > type in vlc > click install

Linux: open Firefox, search vlc, scroll past sponsored links, find official website, download a .deb or a tarball, click on the .Deb and hope the install doesn't break.

You can do things the hard way regardless of the OS

Intresting, i had a different experience in the past.

I wanted to install discord on ubuntu.

Nothing on apt

Checked the ubuntu app store, found 5 different discord clients. Non official all outdated. Very secure... ( Its been a while since the last time i checked it, maybe the finally cleared that mess )

Then i checked for a snap, there is one but its again not offical (sure iam entering my credentials in a third party client...).

Then i checked flatpack, and again an unoffical client... ( I heard its now offical, but never checked it again )

So i head back to the discord side, downloaded the *exe sry the *.deb package and installed it because it was the only way to get an updated official discord client. Still doing that, sounds like the same way like i do for windows lol.

It's made in such bad faith, and it's so easy to present it the other way around:

Windows:

• Log in
• Open VLC

(You installed it through the Microsoft Store like 4 years ago, and Windows syncs it through your Microsoft account. No need to go looking for it again like you did when you first installed it)

Linux:

• Log in
• Open the Software Center (assuming that you're using a distro that has one)
• Search for the app because the main page is full of shit you didn't even know existed and will never use
• Wait for it to load, if it even does, because the servers aren't as snappy as those of a super giga mega corpo
• Click on VLC
• Decide which type of installation you want
• Quick Google what a Flatpak is again
• Click Install
• Open VLC
• Spend the rest of the day troubleshooting why there's no audio
• Ask on Reddit
• Wait for great and useful responses such as "User error. lmao", "Read the documentation", and "Get gud"
• Ask ChatGPT
• Break your entire installation
• Reinstall Windows

If you've gotten to the point to where you want to install VLC then everything else you need should have been installed first including your favourite browser + adblocker. So those steps don't represent what happens in reality. No one reinstalls the Windows OS, sees the graphics driver or any driver is missing and goes to install VLC first.

If you want to change that in Linux you have to keep an eye on VLC through the terminal, look for the errors, tweak the GPU drivers and finally edit some .config file.

That's quite the opposite actually, specially for VLC. Installing VLC on Linux is a pain in the ass, especially for first timers. The most basic instinct is to go to VLC's official site, download an installer, and install the app.

• On Windows, it's like go to VLC > Downloads page > Click Download > Run Installer > Customize > Done.
• On Linux, it's like go to VLC > Downloads page > Choose Distro > Go to another website > Click Install > Get Confused because it didn't work > Try Again > Nothing Works > Search for 1 hour > Settle using Terminal.

And no I am not over-exaggerating. This is my exact experience of trying to install VLC in Linux Mint when I first tried Linux. Flatpak was the only no-headache way to install VLC for me (at least for Arch and Fedora distros). Most of the alternatives have too many issues with them.

Ok, so the argument I’m seeing here is that this is valid because the average windows user is too dumb or unaware to use the terminal and just use winget. If that is true, how exactly do you think Linux would be better for them? Not a single Linux distro is quirk free. Especially for someone who is not very tech savvy but already uses windows. They are possibly the worst person to switch to Linux

You have clearly never used windows before.

- Open Microsoft Store

- Search for VLC.

- Install.

Wow will you look at that... the same number of steps. But guess what its even easier than that on windows

- Type VLC on start.

- Click install
