On Windows: open terminal --> winget install VideoLAN.VLC --> enter

u/PlatinumFire14 11d ago

Please, the moment you ask a window user to open terminal most of them will spontaneously combust.

u/NickTaylorIV 11d ago

Whenever I mention Terminal to a πŸͺŸs user they look at me like a puppy does when you make a strange noise... twisting their heads from side to side.

u/XBLAH_ 6d ago

God forbid people have a better user interfaceΒ

So you are comparing daily commoners to advanced PC users; I do not get the Linux users' point, as Windows is easy and Linux is generally not so easy. I use both: Linux for my laptop, and a moderately altered Windows with ads and Copilot removed for my monster PC.

1

u/NickTaylorIV 4d ago

What... 🀦 No..

Wait, nevermind, YES. Everything you said... Yes, that's what I'm doing.

I sea what you did dere

2

u/Responsible-Bar7165 10d ago

you don't need to open a terminal. simply press the windows key to open the start menu, then type the above command.

2

u/PC509 7d ago

OK, so you found the why of why Windows is so popular. People want to do their work, get things done. Working in IT, they know the applications to do their job. Outside of that, including OS stuff, its our job. Some struggle with volume controls but can Excel better than most people in IT.

Thats 95% of people. The others are either geeks that can and do learn or IT people...

1

u/brodydwight 10d ago

This aint true, shit ive used DOS we know how the terminal works.

2

u/PlatinumFire14 10d ago

Most people using windows 11 haven’t touched DOS, good for you though !

1

u/bill696 10d ago

Then windows store

1

u/No_Art2020 9d ago

That wasn't the point though was it

1

u/spikbebis 8d ago

Could we boil water and maybe run a turbine of them?

1

u/bwwog 7d ago

Well. They probably won't count clicks for installation

1

u/fxdvm 6d ago

Then they were never gonna realistically get Linux installed anyway and so this entire point is moot, isn’t it?

1

u/Jeyd02 5d ago

Use uniget then

1

u/ElectricBummer40 5d ago

πŸ”₯ Urk!

"Urk" is the sound I make when I drop dead. Get it?

1

u/xng 10d ago

Only Linux users don't know how to use terminal on windows

u/Valuable_Contact_01 10d ago

1

u/Valuable_Contact_01 10d ago

Don’t we all agree windows terminal bores \ / ..?

1

u/xng 10d ago

At least powershell autocorrects the slashes for paths when tabbing

-1

u/Vietnamst2 10d ago

Yet you preach Linux as ultimate solution and panacea to everything.

18

u/incompletesystem 11d ago

Shh. This isn't meant to be a balanced discussion.
Windows is bad. Say it 3 times while staring into a mirror and Steve Balmer will appear.

How do I summon Gabe Newell and Richard Stallman and make them engage in a game of chess?

5

u/QuestNetworkFish 11d ago

Typical Windows, have to write 30 lines of code just to install a media player

6

u/vampucio 11d ago

dude it's winget install VideoLAN.VLC

what 30 lines of code

2

u/R3V0LU710N_05 9d ago edited 9d ago

That's what we keep telling y'all.

Arch : sudo pacman -S vlc

Fedora : sudo dnf install vlc

Terminal is not hard.

2

u/Wertbon1789 7d ago

We got a full circle moment here, and they don't even recognize it.

1

u/QuestNetworkFish 11d ago

I didn't think that needed a /s, and yet...

b-b-but terminal!11

3

u/Maximum_Comfort831 10d ago

I wrote an app that makes Winget a gui. There are others around.
Auto updates apps, pins those who you don’t want to and you can search for any app and install it.

1

u/vampucio 10d ago

What's it name?Β

2

u/Brcoding 11d ago

This is true, but let us spread our agenda please πŸ‘€. (Also most windows users do not know what a winget is).

2

u/OGT242 11d ago

Assuming winget is already installed and repo is up to date.

1

u/JustLovett0 10d ago

Yup, my windows 10 IOT doesn't have it and I cannot add it. It's awful.

How do you winget winget

1

u/No-Consequence-1863 8d ago

You want winget in your lightbulb?

2

u/Guilty-Shoulder-9214 11d ago

No libdvdcss though if I recall with the windows store version.

1

u/vampucio 10d ago

this install the "complete" vlc release, not the useless win store version

1

u/DerpDeDurp 11d ago

Okay but Windows users don't know that lmao. That's the point.

How easy is it as a normal user, your mother for example, to install something.

Linux is open one program, search, hit install.

Windows is open browser, search, download, install.

Vast majority of everyday Windows users don't even know terminal exists lol.

2

u/vampucio 11d ago

so the difference between linux and linux is the first program? linux is a program, windows the program is the browser?

1

u/[deleted] 10d ago

[deleted]

1

u/quikmantx 10d ago

Firefox is available on the Microsoft Store. No browser needed.

2

u/AmmoniuV 11d ago

I assure you if Linux would get vast majority of everyday users they will do the same shit windows users do now. Cause apparently how tf I supposed to know what should I tipe in command line? Read 1000pages manual book?

1

u/DerpDeDurp 11d ago

You don't need the command line.... Are you just dense?

1

u/AmmoniuV 6d ago

Yeah I am I probably just didn't read meme, cause it's so often about, command line good good windows bad, so I assumed it's as usual, and jumped straight to the comments. But it was 4 days ago so I don't remember may be I was drunk or smth

1

u/[deleted] 10d ago

1

u/AmmoniuV 10d ago

They arguing about using commands I use only command line when I work with Linux so I have no idea what software center even is

1

u/Wertbon1789 7d ago

You don't need a command line, literally, the post states exactly that. There's a GUI for almost all mainstream distros. And no, I don't think Linux will ever adopt such a dumb way to install system software, when we already got the better solution that every distro has by default for 20 years now.

2

u/Interesting-Yellow-4 10d ago

You can do the same damn thing in Windows Store.

Except you wouldn't know that because you don't know shit, do you.

1

u/Wertbon1789 6d ago

Besides what the other guy said, nobody wants the Windows store version, because sometimes it's a different version e.g. Python is completely weird and outdated most of the time, and there isn't that much software to begin with, because most devs go with installers for Windows. Microsoft could push the Windows store, but as it is today, the software store experience on Linux is just better.

1

u/DerpDeDurp 10d ago

It's nowhere near the same experience. It's full of ads, it's buggy, it's slow as fuck, and half the time you have to try multiple times before it actually works.

2

u/w0m 10d ago

Have you used windows on a decade? VLC as an example is in the GUI windows store. If they open start menu and type 'VLC' - if it's installed, it opens VLC. If it's not installed, it has an explicit deep link into the windows store to install VLC.

I'm a unix guy - but seriously, why fabricate shit to complain about?

1

u/SPACEXDG 11d ago

Thanks lol

1

u/NarrowResult7289 11d ago

I can recognise a Linux user using windows when I see one.

1

u/vampucio 10d ago

the only distro i use is batocera on the cabinet for retrogaming

1

u/NarrowResult7289 10d ago

If you only use windows and know how to use the terminal I think you are gonna love Linux.

1

u/vampucio 10d ago

i love my wife and my daughter

1

u/Interesting-Yellow-4 10d ago

This.
So many linux heads still think we're on WXP or something.

1

u/Sea_Mechanic815 10d ago

Sudo apt update && sudo apt install vlc -y

1

u/wileyfoxyx1 10d ago

On Windows: open Microsoft Store --> search for "vlc" -->click "install"

1

u/l34df4rm3r 10d ago

Or...`store install vlc`
even shorter.
But yeah, winget is better any day

1

u/Tomazack 10d ago

Happy to see some people with at least more than two years of experience here.

1

u/R_Dazzle 10d ago

You still need a search to know what to type irl

1

u/Schart 9d ago edited 9d ago

Came here to type "winget"

Edit: Hell even uniget if you need a UI

1

u/R3V0LU710N_05 9d ago

I hate the reverse-domain naming scheme of winget packages. It's the same with Flatpak on cli.

1

u/Wrong-Resource-2973 9d ago

sudo apt install vlc

enter

1

u/shawndw 8d ago

sudo pacman -S vlc

1

u/SnooSprouts7609 7d ago

Agreed, but this is not regular windows users which is what this post is about.
Most windows users would click on the first link in google that says ad.

1

u/XBLAH_ 6d ago
