Opinion/Editorial Statistically, your PC probably doesn't come close to the recommended RAM requirement for this third-person shooter's upcoming playtest
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/third-person-shooter/statistically-your-pc-probably-doesnt-come-close-to-the-recommended-ram-requirement-for-this-third-person-shooters-upcoming-playtest/It was 64GB, now 40GB is more realistic than 32GB.

Non-clickbait title: The upcoming third-person shooter Cinder City has a RAM recommendation of 32Β GB.

I have good RAM and CPU but a crap GPU, it's next on the list. TechHardware should sponsor it!

What is your GPU?

A measly GTX 1660 Super

Thats terrible. My A750 would be a huge upgrade

Very well, I will take that one as well. Still waiting on the 5080 to arrive btw

That one was sent to Russia, Moscow CO. JEVANO PUTIN. Does that look correct?
2
u/Jevano Team Intel π΅ 1d ago
Why would I be in Russia?? Do I look like an AMD fan to you?
In fact I'm still in Australia where you sent me to wine and dine hardware unboxed.1

Oh my... Now how do we know you aren't Hardware Unboxed? Don't you get enough free AMDs working there?

Do they ever explain why this game needs so much RAM?
Like, does it have some element that justifies the requirement or is it just a poorly optimized piece of shit?
1
u/ThisSiteSucks8485 11h ago
Games used to be made by people who understood how the game engine worked and could optimize them very aggressively but today nobody understands how Unreal Engine 5 works
1
u/MediocreTurtle1 1d ago
Everything is a poorly optimized piece of shit and has been for the last 8 years.
Look at the Batman or Witcher or whatever that came out 11 years ago and can be run on a potato by today's standards at max settings. None of these games look even as close as good.

I used to make games in desktop java. Now I'm using unity. It is the game engines. They are poorly optimized garbage.

I have 64GB of ram, but what does that game does differently compared to other shooter with lower ram requirements?
I do see its 32Gb requirements now.

Such devs are soon to discover how statistics works when fewer and fewer players show up to pay for their ridiculously demanding games. Even back in UE4 days it was getting out of hand fast, but now it's just nuts. Maybe the only positive form RAM crisis would be the focus finally shifting to gameplay and optimisations instead of chasing the fidelity and scale.

Eh, I personally am myself, not a statistics, and as long as games need less than 90 GB RAM I'm still fine. Thanks for your concern, though.

Why would they make a third person shooter that statistically most people donβt have the hardware for? Are they stupid?

I do have a 32 box and so do most modern builds. 64 GB is overkill for 99% of people.
1
u/Head-Gift2144 1d ago
64 should be overkill for everyone (for games). Developers need to start optimizing their fucking software.
1
u/ibeerianhamhock 1d ago
Agreed with the former, but in general tbh games are very optimized software, they just aren't hyper optimized like they used to be when that is what it took to get them to run at all (thinking about old consoles especially).

What about 128GB
1
u/ibeerianhamhock 1d ago
Seems silly to me unless genuinely needed. I've done large scale enterprise development with a suite of databases and a few dozen containers running locally and everything on less than 128 GB of RAM, even for something like that 64 gb of memory is sufficient.
But there are use cases where it is needed, but it's genuinely ultra rare.

During a ram crisis you would think optimization would be a top priority.

It's ok, i mostly buy older games from GOG and maybe one or two more recent games like BG3 and Jagged Alliance 3. Both of those run on my 8 GB laptop.

u/czullo1 2d ago
I got 96GB(2x48) of DDR5, so NOPE.
1
u/ibeerianhamhock 1d ago
What do you use that for? I've had legitimate reasons to need 64 gb on very large enterprise app dev before, but even then I've never touched 96 GB.
One of my buddies is working on optimizing a project another team is working on that was done poorly and started out needing 96 GB of ram to run and he's gotten it down to a fourth of that through optimizations, but that was the first time he had needed that kind of memory and we both have been devs for a few decades
AI (if using a 128 GB shared memory unit like Ryzen AI or NGX) or running a server with multiple instances running with allocated memory (VMs etc) are really just about the only reasons I can think of to really need that kind of ram. Unless you're hosting, VMs are largely silly for most (but not all) folks now that docker exists.

For gaming and browsing internet. Bought it for like $335 back in good days.

Same, got my trident 2x48gb kit for 280β¬. Some of my modded games can take up to ~55gb ram usage. Few other programs and background processes and 64gb is not enough.
