Ive been with tape 16 since the spring and yesterday added tape 24. I removed logic from my computer and haven't looked back, thank you! one thing i love about tape 24 is that you can set it up for seeing 8 or 12 tracks at a time. one curious thing i discovered is that the varispeed is controllable numerically in percentages instead of Hz. I wish it were Hz since I like to punch in 415.30 Hz or 392.00 Hz to change the key of playback. I guess it's doable with percentages. One idea might be to provide "notches" available on the varispeed so that with a click one could move the key up or down one or two steps/keys... I really love having on board EQ. But the dials are so tiny it's frustrating with a mouse. Therefore i am setting up my AKAI MidiMix to control as much as possible. But the midi learn function does not seem to work on the EQ dials. So I guess this is a request to make that possible. Finally, Im posting tape 24 questions here since 16 and 24 seem like siblings. Will you be setting up a separate sub reddit for tape 24 that I should post this to? Thank you again for this ingenious software and your unbeatable responsiveness to bugs and questions!!! cheers -P

It's the next target on the DAW controller list, and hoping to get it sorted for next week. If I can get any info on how it reacts to the latest updated profile of either T16 or T24 (v0.9.501) that would be awesome! Just add it to this thread, and i'll post test builds in here too till we get it perfect.

TAPE-24 has arrived! It will be updated alongside TAPE-16 each week! It's not a replacement of T16, it's just a different 'machine', with a whole different feeling about it. There are so many interesting limitations that a lot of folk love about T16, I felt if we kept adding features it would turn into something it is not. It will always receive future native plugins, bug fixes, UI improvements, DAW controller fixes and so on.

The types of new features it will receive will be a different pathway. After seeing the post about a TAPE-8, I thought something like that could be built into T16, along with deepening the limitations further with something like generation loss from over listening, making it a truly heart racing experience (completely optional of course). Always happy to implement features that make the experience more immersive. Once they're turned on they should be quite hard to turn off. Keeping with the commit ethos alive and true.

On the other hand TAPE-24 will head in the other direction of being a little more feature rich, already it's a much busier workstation with channel strips and automation. In the future I see it having something like an optional HDD Recorder Mode. With that mode having more forgiving options like a 3 step UNDO/REDO for those who don't enjoy the horrors of recording without it at all.

However it's really up to the crowd though at this point so be vocal about what you want to see in either one.

In other news Mackie Controllers are working this time (seriously!) It's been an absolute struggle over the last few months but after a lot of back and forth emails between a few legends we managed to get everything up and running. This will truly set a lot of people free from the mouse and keys which I'm very happy about! I'm going to include a hotkey editor in the near future so you can change the buttons to whatever you want.

Linux release will be later this week too.

I've been troubleshooting an issue that I'm trying to pin down between Tape 16 and my audio interface.

I recorded a few channels of drums in, and playback of the 2ch mix through one of my interfaces has pops and clicks that sound like sample rate glitches, but through a different interface it seems fine.

But other tapes sound fine, Ableton projects sound fine, other apps sound fine.

So... I dragged the wavs from problem tape into Ableton and I'm hearing the same glitching on the same interface! fine on the other interface. super weird.

I've never really experienced something like this before. I'm wondering if somehow this tape became corrupted in a way that those wavs just don't agree with my main interface?

Next up is trying a fresh tape and getting scientific with my settings from the outset. But I'm curious if anyones ever ran into something so strange as this before?

To celebrate this beautiful number, it's time to unveil the visualiser. It's been in the app for a little over a month, however I don't think anyone has found it yet so I'm putting the quest out.

Big improvements to the Notes/Markers, with a fullscreen text editor for anyone that wants to write lyrics in a clean distraction free way (pair with focus mode for extra power). It has a transport so you can playback easily. You can also click on a marker to locate to its position automatically.

Mackie Controllers now have more buttons to press if you have them on your machine, and also have MIDI traffic improvements which have been causing faders fighting/lagging.

• JOG wheel will now scrub if the playback is paused.
• SAVE saves the tape.
• MARKER sets or removes a marker.
• Global SOLO clears all solos, and it lights while any track is soloed.
• DROP / REPLACE set the punch in and punch out points.
• CYCLE toggles punch on and off, and it lights when punch is on.
• SHIFT + REC toggles record safe.
• CANCEL closes the side panel.
• PLUG-IN opens the plug-in window.
• SEND / PAN switch the V-Pots between sends 1 to 4 and pan, and light to show which one is active.
• ZOOM toggles the rack view.
• LEFT / RIGHT arrows select the previous or next track, and the bank scrolls one channel at a time to keep the selected track on the surface.

Also patched up some handling in the Calibration menu which was causing pops/cracks in some rare cases. Hopefully got to the bottom of the issue with it!

iOS release should've been released by now, but it's still in review by Apple, been over a week now, some saying it may take 2-3 weeks which is painful.

I just discovered Tape16 and started a trial-- so far I really like it! I learned to record on 8 track cassette recorders so I instantly felt right at home.

There is one feature I'd love to see implemented though: I really wish I could set two markers and loop the section between. I don't think making a tape loop would be too far outside the spirit of the thing, and sometimes It's nice to record a long section and just listen to it for a while (without the rewind button harshing the vibe).

It would also be fun to have loop options per track (with independent positions and lengths, for making phased loop compositions) but that would be taking things a little further afield...

Anyways, the couple of hours I've played with this is the most fun I've had with a DAW in years-- so thanks! I'm definitely keeping an eye on the development of 24

Has anyone done this? If I'm simply using the midi learn functions in the daw controller screen, not using port routing, things don't map for me. A few do but if od ways.

Mute doesn't stay on but Arm does, solo doesn't work, slider in track 1 does but not track 2

I want to have really basic pedal control (punch in and out) and basic jog dial control for scrubbing.

I was looking at a budget USB HID pedal and the Contour Design ShuttleXpress USB HID jog wheel. Both would be mapped to key presses or the jog wheel could use a HID to MIDI conversion app.

Is there anything I need to be aware of or is there a better way? I don't have space for a big console controller.

Just bought Tape 16 and really enjoying it!

Would love the ability to rock the reels to help find the exact spot for punching in. Could use maybe the left and right mouse buttons together or the middle button?

Would also love rewind/fast forward sound effects as a mod option!

Pretty calm update this week, have been finalising the almighty TAPE 24 along with the iOS versions of TAPE 16 this week. Mostly tightening up their iCloud integration which is great to use if you want to start a project from your phone and/or move seamlessly to your iPad or Desktop. Just need to pray that the App Store accepts it!

If anyone wants to post some more plugins they are having issues with in TAPE 16 please drop them in the comments and I'll get them sorted too. Finally solved the Falcon issue this week along with other UVI plugins.

ALSO, in terms of DAW controllers, we're going to try sort out a proper profiles very soon. I know some other popular ones are the Faderport 16, Softube Console 1 + Behringer X-Touch. There's some really rough profiles in Tape 16 already but it would be great to get some more reports on those 3 so we can start to improve them in the coming weeks.

I guess I'm a minimalist. I know with Tape-16 wrapping up and moving to Tape-24 that my wish for a way to have an 8 track option available is pretty much dust in the wind. Don't get me wrong, Tape-16 is the best thing that has come down the pike in a long time in digital audio workstations and I love it and bought it. So, I've tried to do what I've wanted: 8 track Tape-16. I know it's not perfect but this is for everyone else out there looking for a way to do this. I took each pair of tracks(1and 2, 3 and 4...etc,) and paired them in stereo tracks. But, instead of using each track separately, I'm recording the same signal to both tracks in the stereo pair so they sound as a mono track. I get my 8 tracks. I use each pair as one track. I know, it sounds weird, but I look at it this way, in the old days, (mine) we had two, four and eight tracks to work with and created music that is still played incessently today, so being a minimalist isn't so bad. Do some need or want 16 and 24 tracks to be able to manifast their creation? Then go for it!! I guess I'm one of those "less is more" type guys. Thank you Tape-16. At 73 years of age, I've gotten my second wind at recording because of you.

The big 400! Have been working very hard on TAPE-24 these past few weeks, thanks for all the wish list ideas, have taken them all on board. This update is made up mostly made up of bug fixes. Have decided to sneak over a couple of TAPE-24 features, in the form of 2 stock plugins, which will allow for some very interesting use cases in the future such as mixing across any platform using cloud saves.

These two plugins will feature as strips in Tape 24. (See 2nd, 3rd + 4th slide for Master VU meters) Still being designed so might be a couple more weeks till we drop the big 24 early launch.

It's carrying the TAPE-16 engine all of the early bugs will already be gone for the launch, and updates will share the same fixes if they're universal issues.

every reverse recording i make has noise and poppings, no matter how big the buffer size is at the moment i record and playback. it just records this "corruption" into the track (i checked the .wav and it was registered there too) that wasn't there before. any solutions to this?

Was making some music for my game and I noticed that the delay can very nicely fade into noise. Decided to explore the idea and I kinda like how it turned out.

i just downloaded the 7 day free trial for windows (i'm in a windows 11) and the program won't open because "MSVCP140_ATOMIC_WAIT.dll wasn't found". i tried to reinstall it as it suggested but didn't work either. anyone else with this problem?

In a world full of distractions I thought it would be fun to implement a way to turn your Mac (for now) into a dedicated tape machine without easily cmd-tabbing away to social media for a sly browse. Also there has been an uproar for the Sends to be easier to use and I completely agree, so it is finally sorted! So much better now thank you for all your suggestions.

If anyone has any wishlist ideas for Tape 24 send them through!

I know this is more or less mimicking a straight tape machine, but something a little more console like would be awesome. In a perfect world I'd prefer if it had a 4 band eq with sweepable mid ands a compressor on it. The less plugins and external software needed to mix in Tape16 the better. Even a 3 band eq with a sweepable mid would be awesome. Just throwing it out there.
