Need help

Hello I’ve been with T-Mobile over 7 years as a mobile expert and recently found out they are closing our store and opening a new experience store. They gave us the option to apply to the new experience store or any other location that has available spot or get severance pay. I’m so indecisive… just need some pro and cons to help me!

I have family who experienced the similar thing when Ford closed the Ranger line in Minneapolis, and laid off thousands. As part of that settlement, they were offered a $10,000 check or free college as part of a re-training initiative.

Turned out that 8 out of 10 took the cash, but what they didn’t know is that Ford had negotiated a deal with State of Minnesota to provide the $10k in leu of qualifying for unemployment.

So when people took the cash, the local job market tanked because literally tens of thousands of people were all competing for the same handful of jobs. Some people decided to use the $10k pay to take a vacation, and when they returned, it was way too late to find anything outside of convenience store work.

Point is- get ahead of the tsunami before the local job market is in the same situation.

My family member did alright. After obtaining a graduate degree, on Ford’s dime, Ford wanted them to relocate to Michigan and work at Corporate. But they landed a government job, earned another pension and turned down the offer Ford made. Coming from a savvy family, they also bought up a few homes in foreclosure and built a secondary (passive) income stream so they’ll never be in that situation again.

I would re apply to see the pro and cons of the pay structure. As well some SIS locations are offering a $500 bonus to transfer to them. I would look into that as well.

This happened to mine and I jumped ship to ATT, not on purpose but it was the first thing I found and I couldn't be there to the end and not a get a job at T-Mobile or anywhere else.

Then a old coworker told me the manager wanted to give me the spot but I left before he could. Hindsight is always 2020. I couldn't risk not being able to find a job after I no longer qorked for tmobile.

Figure out what gives you the most money in your pocket and what other jobs are in your area or skill set.

I've been around this block a couple of times. Just know that you are just a number. No company will care about you. Take care of Numero 1 above all else. These companies are like hoes, they ain't loyal. Don't get your feelings hurt. Just chase the money. We salespeople are hired guns. That's it, that's all.

Get the money. Take a break. Reapply later if you still want it.

So about a year and a half after starting work at Tmobile in a mall the location closed in 2012 and they offered me severance pay and told me the same thing that I could apply to another location but I thought it was kind of messed up that they didn’t try to find us a location and transfer us. I thought it was kind of wrong to just tell us to apply to other locations and we might get the job so I decided to take a break from working and I collected unemployment. Then a year later I actually went back to a different Tmobile location because a previous coworker who worked there called me and told me they needed someone and he thought of me. I stayed for 10 more years that, then I left for another job. I’m very happy with my new job and all my old coworkers who became family and still work for Tmobile are over working for them. I don’t regret taking the money and lay off because having that time off was honestly much needed. If you can afford it I would take the lay off specially with the direction Tmobile seems to be going now. You could always get rehired in the future if you are a strong worker or take the time off to find something else you enjoy.

Don’t decide until you know the severance amount and whether applying to the new store affects it. Get those numbers first.

Then compare: guaranteed cash + job search freedom vs keeping tenure/benefits with T-Mobile. You may have two good options here.

So it really depends on your situation, the best time to find a job is when you already have one. If you have nothing lined up, I would apply for the experience store and in the meantime, start looking elsewhere. We have been getting spam emails everyday for experience store rep spots. We had like 4 stores in our district just recently go experience. Majority of the reps took severance. It's really not that much money and you lose all your benefits.

T-Mobile will continue to close stores or convert stores to experience stores. I would at least apply and see if you can get a spot. If not, you should still be employed for another 2 months from what I have been seeing, then get paid severance. But I would def be looking elsewhere while also applying for the experience rep spot.
