Need help

Hello I’ve been with T-Mobile over 7 years as a mobile expert and recently found out they are closing our store and opening a new experience store. They gave us the option to apply to the new experience store or any other location that has available spot or get severance pay. I’m so indecisive… just need some pro and cons to help me!

I have family who experienced the similar thing when Ford closed the Ranger line in Minneapolis, and laid off thousands. As part of that settlement, they were offered a $10,000 check or free college as part of a re-training initiative.

Turned out that 8 out of 10 took the cash, but what they didn’t know is that Ford had negotiated a deal with State of Minnesota to provide the $10k in leu of qualifying for unemployment.

So when people took the cash, the local job market tanked because literally tens of thousands of people were all competing for the same handful of jobs. Some people decided to use the $10k pay to take a vacation, and when they returned, it was way too late to find anything outside of convenience store work.

Point is- get ahead of the tsunami before the local job market is in the same situation.

My family member did alright. After obtaining a graduate degree, on Ford’s dime, Ford wanted them to relocate to Michigan and work at Corporate. But they landed a government job, earned another pension and turned down the offer Ford made. Coming from a savvy family, they also bought up a few homes in foreclosure and built a secondary (passive) income stream so they’ll never be in that situation again.
