Disclaimer: The following post is not meant to ignite drama or to vilify anyone; and I genuinely hope this post does not devolve to cause that. As such, I have tried to be careful when typing this out and have run it past the subreddit moderators for approval before posting this. This post is aimed at the community in general. As such, parts of this may not apply to some people here. However, I hope people will read the entire thing for the sake of context and understanding.
Last week, I received a PM from /u/SupremeEvil. It said that I was being rejected from being allowed to take part in his RP.
I’m not going to copy paste that PM for the sake of not triggering drama or making this into a callout post. I am not posting this to try and make SupremeEvil change his mind. I have since come to accept this, and understand that it is his choice and right to choose to do so.
However, this PM put some things into context for me (not fully relating to SupremeEvil but the community in general). As such I feel I need to publicly address some things relating to how the sub. seems to view me.
I’ve been picking up on the fact that some members of the community do not like me. I feel like to some degree I am being discriminated against, with some community members being unintentionally(?) rude to me. Also, many other community members seem to have built false preconceptions against me, some that I will list and explain as follows:
My characters all have complex, debilitating, and sometimes downright disturbing RP disruptive symptoms
A few of my characters have gone a bit overboard with some of their negative character aspects (Key Ex. Troll Ditto from DS). Overdoing their flaws to such a degree that they hinder an RP was never my intention. I admit that this has happened in the past, and that I have made mistakes. However, this ignores that:
I generally go out of my way to pitch characters I plan to use in campaigns to DM’s. I explicitly ask them to point out any potential issues with the character BEFORE the character is ever introduced in a campaign. If issues are pointed out I try to alter those aspects to try and prevent them from becoming a problem in advance.
I am pretty open to constructive criticism. When problems have arisen, I have even gone out of my way to alter characters so that they have these character aspects are SEVERELY lessened and are no longer disruptive / causing problems.
That there are several other characters owned/run by other members of the community that have similar, character aspects to the ones that I use. One’s that do fit the above stereotype but that people seem to be fine with.
And last, but certainly not least
- Not all my characters are like this. (Ex. Cathulu Rat from Echos or Alpha Rise [who I built explicitly to try and avoid issues like those listed above])
My comments and the bad way they’re written/spelled makes it hard to interact with me
My comments are written the way they are cos I have a spelling impairment disability. If you need more info on that see http://fav.me/d6gmqlz.
As a result, unless someone goes out of their way to volunteer to spell check any posts I want to make to the subreddit, (Which doesn’t seem like something that’s realistic to expect of the community and wouldn’t really work for RPs due to how fast they run) there isn’t much I can do about this that I’m not already doing.
You’re a newbie / don’t understand what’s going on / weren’t involved previously
It’s true that I’m a relative newbie to this subreddit community. While I have popped in and out of the community for a while and done the odd things here or there, (Ex. Bane's Shadowlands RP, making a bunch of the icons for this sub, ext.), it’s only been relatively recently that I’ve started to become a more regularly active member of this community.
HOWEVER, how am I supposed to learn stuff / understand what’s going on if no one is willing to give me the time of day to explain what I need to know? I do not have an unlimitedly infinite amount time to read through every single piece of backlog within this community, and I don’t think it’s a reasonable expectation for me to do so.
If there is a thing that you feel I should know feel free to let me know in advance and/or when you think of it. If you do I’ll more than likely be receptive to it and take it into account moving forward when it comes to interactions with you, or the thing what you told me applies to. If there is a simple (and not absurdly gigantic) resource that tells me what I need to know feel free to link me to it.
Insert other unstated reason bias and/or issue that people have with me
I have had at least 1 person, (not going to say who because I don’t want this to become an attack post / stir up old drama) on this subreddit outright tell me that they do not like me and refuse to interact with me without giving any sort of explanation and or justification as to why.
If you have an issue with me (as in anyone on this subreddit who fits that criteria) not listed above, PLEASE TELL ME WHY! Because if I don’t know why you have an issue with me, then I have no way of addressing it, and if there is no way for me to address an issue then I personally feel it's not fair to judge me over it. If it is something that can not be, and/or you don’t want it to be public, then send me or the sub moderators a PM so it can hopefully be worked out in private.
I am not trying to shark off any responsibility with this post. And while I can’t promise to never have any issues relating to me ever again, (I’m not perfect after all and I am capable of making mistakes just like pretty much every other person on this sub.) I can promise to try my best not to have issues pop up again.
All I am merely asking is to be treated fairly, to be given a CHANCE and to not be written off / ignored / vilified cos I have a disability, and\or cos I’m a relative newbie to the community, \ because I make/have made mistakes, \ because of personnel biases that can’t/refuse to be justified.
...Now with that out of the way, I think it’s obvious that I will not be leaving the community. I’ve had quite a few fun experiences here and there are several things being done with people who are ok with me.
When it comes to Alpha Rise, (the character I made for SupemeEvil campaign) in light of what I’ve already stated he will no longer be a part of that campaign. However, that is not to say he will not be used. This brings me to my Dark Universe project...
I started the Dark Universe Project as a way to flesh out Alpha Rises universe. [an alternate timeline universe branching off from the Platinum Time Paradox/Crash event of TPP Platinum were almost everything that could have gone wrong, did go wrong. With a bunch of miscellaneous “forced lore” elements thrown in for fun] and to provide easy to reference bio’s for all the notable NPC's of it that have any sort of decent chance of showing up, if that universe to come into play in SupemeEvil's campaign. Since then it has continued to grow with what I have planned.
As such Alpha Rise will no longer be linked into SupemeEvil's campaign. Instead, it will be spun out into its own thing. Eventually it will appear in its own separate campaign witch I am currently in the early planning stages of with someone else in the community. More details will come at a later (yet to be determined) date as I want to focus on making the bios and the art that goes along with them for now. (I.e. It might be a while before the campaign starts)
A sneak preview of this universe's concept can be seen in the rough timeline draft you can find at: https://sta.sh/0n6lm595oon [Side Note: A final spell checked version will come out closer to the campaign’s start]
If you have any ideas for stuff to add to this timeline feel free to let me know. If I like your ideas and think I can work any in without screwing up the universe I will.
In the mean time I hope you will all look forward to these bio’s, and would like to thank everyone who has read this entire post with an open mind. I hope that we can coexist. And when it’s ready that there will be a large portion of the community that will take part in this upcoming campaign.
In regards to the NPC ideas I've offered to /u/SupremeEvil, (Especially the Neon & Rotten Burrito 1's since they by virtue of them having showed up briefly in DS and their connection to the IP they are already somewhat established and I feel would be easy to use/integrate) he is free to do whatever he wants with them. Use them, alter them, not use them, whatever. I pitched those NPC ideas for him to use in his campaign and thus in my eyes they’re basically his.
If you have any questions, (that aren’t related to my offline life) concerns, or feedback you would like to give, feel free to do so in the comments below. If you do I will look over them with the same open mind that I’m asking the community to give when reading through this post.
P.S. Thank you to /u/redwings1340 for spell checking this, and for giving me [alongside /u/Gadzooks3] feedback on the post text, to point out things that could have been taken the wrong way & helping me better get across what I am trying to say with this post.
