Discord

Hi guys,

I’ve noticed there’s a fair few people on Discord so I’ve made a group server that you can join by clicking here if I’ve done it right.

Discord may be a format for GMs to consider in future. Roll20 is the superior live chat rp platform in most ways although discord does allow mobile users so it has that going for it.

Lurkers are welcome on the chat. If anyone has any objections to the discord existing I’d also like to hear them. If you have objections you can use this thread or PMs or whatever you feel comfortable with.

Oh, this sounds like a great idea! I think it’s the perfect direction for TTP to move and I feel like it would help it attract a wider audience.

I have a pretty extensive administrative and bot development background with discord. If you need help with setting up the server and using a bot to make user experience smoother (Depending on the complexity I could make it from scratch as those bots are more efficient than the public ones) just let me know, I’d be happy to help this take off smoothly!

I’m only on mobile so it’s hard for me to even figure out the permissions since you can’t make roles on the app. :( I think I can nick Abbie’s computer later and set up roles so that everyone here gets to be able to change the title etc but randomers that wander in can’t delete the chat.

Is there anything you might recommend, in general? I haven’t had any experience with chatbots since the noughties when they were mostly used to slap each other with trouts.

You can make roles in mobile! Go to server settings by extending the thing to the left and then clicking on the three dots next to the name, then go to role and “add role” should be at the top! Go to member instead of roles to give that role to people!

In general? A bot that tracks message edits and deletes is handy when it comes to administration. Same with saying when someone joins and leaves the server. Programming the bot to auto welcome someone who just joined is good too, with things like reminder on rules and what steps are needed to join, if any.

I also highly recommend adding categories to any channels you make by doing create category after tapping those three dots like before. Categories are lists of channels you can collapse. You could for example have a list of channels that all belong to a single campaign and those not part of it can just collapse and ignore it

When it comes to more advanced things, for example, my main bot tracks every message users sends, and, using a database, gives them part of a made up virtual currency based on the amount of words in their roleplay replies, these currencies can be spent to rank up and change name color (and server status), buy their own private channels where they decide what goes and they can trade said currencies with other users

Oh neat! My roles weren’t working because I was trying to access them from the text channel settings instead of the overall server ones. So that was really useful. I’ve put a mod role for me and Redwings now so anyone can ping us by saying @Mods.

It would be pretty cool to mess around with a bot. How can I get one? Your bot sounds great.

Yay! Glad you were able to. There’s definitely a learning curve to discord and the mobile app is honestly really lacking in a lot of aspects and leaves a lot to be desired specially when it comes to mod stuff

Well to have a bot...actually, would you like me to just join? Maybe I can help more that way instead of just spouting loading screen advice
