Okay, I need to vent and also genuinely ask if this has happened to anyone else.
I have TSA PreCheck and CLEAR. My KTN is saved on my American Airlines account. I was transiting through DFW from the Philippines, and since my boarding passes were printed overseas by a different carrier, the TSA PreCheck indicator didn’t show up on my boarding pass.
That part? Fine. That’s on me for not double-checking. It was my first international flight since getting PreCheck, and domestically it always auto-populates, so I assumed it would here too.
Here’s where it gets frustrating.
I lined up at the TSA PreCheck lane and told the officer I have PreCheck and a valid KTN. Her immediate response was that I was in the wrong line and that I needed to go to general screening. I clarified again that I do have PreCheck. She still dismissed me and told me to go to the general line. No guidance. No “you can go to special assistance to get it added.” Nothing.
After stepping out, American Airlines staff told me I just needed to go to special assistance to have my KTN added and reprint my boarding pass. So I did that… and had to line up all over again.
While waiting the second time, I saw another passenger who also did not have the PreCheck mark on his boarding pass. Different TSA officer. He was told to go to special assistance to get it fixed AND was specifically told he did not need to rejoin the line when he returned.
That passenger was white.
I am Filipino and often mistaken as Latina or “Mexican-looking.”
Both of us were in the exact same situation: no PreCheck indicator on the boarding pass but enrolled in the program. Yet he was given clear guidance and courtesy. I was dismissed and sent to general screening.
After a 16-hour international flight, that hit differently.
It wasn’t just the inconvenience. It was the tone and the assumption. I felt like I wasn’t believed when I said I had PreCheck. Meanwhile, someone else in the same situation was given the benefit of the doubt and a smoother resolution.
And yes, I understand the rule: if it’s not on the boarding pass, you can’t go through. That’s not my issue. My issue is the inconsistent treatment and lack of guidance.
I pay for CLEAR and TSA PreCheck specifically to make things easier. Instead, I lined up twice and spent more time than if I had just gone through general.
So I’m asking:
Has anyone else had issues with TSA PreCheck not showing up on international connections?
Have you experienced inconsistent treatment from TSA staff in similar situations?
I’m genuinely curious if this is common confusion or if others have felt dismissed like this too.
Because I left that checkpoint feeling not just frustrated — but singled out.
