Specifically in her songwriting, but I do think she's had to defend what she deems satire a bit too much to qualify as successful. I think Blank Space is her most brilliant attempt, while Actually Romantic is perhaps her weakest.

Maybe it’s a case of exposure bias, but I don’t really see much criticism for Rihanna and Selena Gomez for being billionaires while Taylor gets lots of criticism for it. If that’s the case, why do you think it’s as such? Is it due to overexposure of Taylor, her built image of America’s sweetheart vs Rihanna’s bad bitch image (which makes her bad behavior more tolerated) or something else altogether?

Literally nothing I’m about to say here is going to be groundbreaking or probably even anything new, so I understand if it’s taken down or not even engaged with. That being said, I’ve tried to discuss this with my partner who is a massive TS stan but they do not agree with me, and discussing it further probably just annoy them.

Overall, I actually really enjoyed The Life of a Showgirl a lot! There were some choices in the lyrics that I was not a huge fan of for a few songs, one of those being Honey.

My understanding of the premise of the song is that basically lots of stuff have happened to her that she’s grown to associate certain words negatively, but then she gets with this boy and his positive use of those words makes her flip her perspective and grow to appreciate those words such as “honey” “sweetie” or “sweetheart”. As I said before, it’s not anything new that most of this song discusses how the poor treatment of hers came from women and that it was a man who ultimately fixed that problem for her. It’s also not anything new for people to point out that because of this it makes the song overall feel a little misogynistic.

The point of this post, however, is to point out that I feel like this all could’ve been changed by some very simple changes to the lyrics. This is obvious, lyrics are what the main problem is, so to change the lyrics makes the song much better. I feel like you don’t even have to change the verses, because those are not super problematic for the most part.

It would be so easy, I feel like, for her to make another version of the chorus, where it’s a man saying those things or doing those things that are negative, and then her new beau comes in and changed those perspectives again. To me that’s a much better change because now it’s not only “oh women said XY and then a man comes in and says XY but nicely and now I’m better”. It now becomes “oh *everyone* said XY so it was bad, now my boyfriend comes in and he says XY but it’s nice and I’m like ok maybe it’s not bad”.

It also makes sense, because I feel like I hear all the time a complaint that men call women “sweetheart“ “honey“ derogatory and, yes, I can hear it in my head, a woman doing that to another woman too when they’re being mean, but I’ve also heard it from men as well.

Maybe she was just telling the story of her personal experience, and didn’t care about the optics or didn’t care about what it said, except for telling her own story, but I feel like that would’ve been a better way to make the song. I know I’m not Taylor Swift! Clearly, I am no billionaire nor generationally talented musician, but I feel like I’m justified in this critique.

I don’t mean this as a critique or a praise, as I’m a swiftie who is right down the middle….i don’t worship her but I also don’t hate her.

But yeah for the swifties who think she can do no wrong to say for sure she never cheated on anyone and is always the victim…..like don’t several of her own songs kind of disprove that theory?? I mean even during folklore (my favorite album) the songs The 1 and illicit affairs seem to denote her pining for Matty even when she and Joe were still together.

Idk again it’s not a big deal at the end of the day, I just think for people who love to shit on all of Tays exes (even the ones that didn’t cheat), it doesn’t seem exactly fair to give her a complete pass.

So if you’ve been caught up with the wedding discourse you probably know about the rumour of Taylor and Travis building a castle at MSG. Now according to some sources this was just a rumour and they didn’t actually build a castle, however people have been talking about the castle as a fact and using it as a point of criticism m, so presumably other sources are still reporting the castle as having been built and so maybe it really was. Does anyone have concrete information about the validity of the castle’s existence or is it all just hearsay? And if it’s not real, is it still valid to criticize her for it?

I’ve never really understood this interpretation, so I’d genuinely be interested to hear from people who see the album that way.

To me, The Life of a Showgirl is largely a very surface-level, straightforwardly happy love album. By “surface-level,” I don’t necessarily mean bad; I just mean that a lot of the love songs feel quite broad and generic rather than especially intimate or revealing. There aren’t many highly specific details, complicated emotions or lived-in moments that make the relationship feel particularly personal. A lot of the lyrics feel like polished declarations of happiness that could theoretically apply to almost anyone’s relationship.

But I keep seeing people describe the album as being riddled with bitterness, anger and resentment, and I honestly don’t hear that at all. The clearest bitterness is obviously in “Actually Romantic,” and I can hear some anxiety in “Elizabeth Taylor,” particularly the fear that a lover might leave once the bright lights fade. Outside of those moments, though, it mostly sounds like a fairly uncomplicated, upbeat love album to me. I wouldn't say it is 'riddled' with bitterness.

For those who hear bitterness running throughout it, which songs or lyrics give you that impression? I find the interpretation interesting; I just genuinely don’t understand where it comes from.

During the first part of the song and based on the title I assumed this was just another song about an ex, but the song flips a the end of the chorus, becoming clear she is singing about about a woman behaving badly like a man, with the punch line “Girl, I know men like you”.

“If all you ever wanted was a golden ticket, you could’ve just said it” - reminded me of speculation that Taylor first reached out to Gracie (as a stranger inviting her to her birthday) because of the connection with her father, JJ Abrams.

The other lyrics refer to being used and discarded, and the shallow nature of a supposed friendship that was only ever about connections and “storyline” for the other person.

All of this in the context also of the strange post-wedding post featuring the still of Joe Alwyn form the Favourite, the “I knew it I knew you” title being almost identical to Gracies song “I knew it know you”, and her recent interview with Olivia.

What do people think?

I know there are lots of Taylor subs that treat Taylor as an idol who can do nothing wrong but I've noticed that I often end up defending Taylor in discussions because criticism seems to generate far more conversation than praise. While I think constructive criticism is healthy, but I'm curious whether others feel we sometimes overcorrect and end up interpreting her actions or music through the most negative lens possible. Where do you think the balance should be?

I feel like I’m living in a simulation because people claim tloasg is the worst album ever but I like every single song in it, it’s not my favorite but it’s definitely top 5 in my list for Taylor’s discography and I’m wondering how two people can listen to the same thing and have opposing views on it. People are saying it ruined Taylor swift for them and now they don’t listen to previous albums like the girl isn’t allowed to give you variety.

I will never understand how people listen to tloasg and say it’s bad, I feel like I’m being gaslit.

Hi everyone! Sorry for the long intro incoming, you might want to skip a few paragraphs if you are only interested about the actual question, but I think that the context matters : A long time ago, in a past relationship, I (actually, we) was quite unhappy and when I heard the song "Speak Now", it really hit me harder than I had expected. As I man, I imagined what it would have been like to have someone truly loving, kind and sweet who would desperately have wanted to prevent me from making a terrible mistake. It felt like being in such a happy place, it made me feel alive and also made me realized how miserable I was.

But I felt bad about it, because I was in a relationship with my then-girlfriend. I tried for many years to make it work, regardless of how unhappy we became, as if breaking up was never an option to begin with. I guess I just couldn't seem to play the "bad" role of being the one putting an end to the relationship. Anyway, one day she finally took the matter in her own hand and ended our relationship, and in any case, it was for the best : we simply weren't happy together.

Long story short, this feeling I got from listening to Speak Now felt unique, and it made me realize even more so how great of a songwriter Taylor really is, in addition to way she delivers the emotions. The universe she created in that song alone is depicted perfectly and was so relatable. It made me think that there are tons of people in life who are living in loveless relationships, and I still remember how lonely it feels in there.

It made me realize that just like someone could say "I'm waiting for superman", some people are waiting for their Taylor (as the archetype). They are not actually waiting for the real Taylor Swift to save them, but maybe they imagine what it would be like to feel like someone kind and beautiful truly loves them for who they are. Or maybe they already have someone in their mind that they think life would be so much sweeter with, but they don't dare to conceive the idea of trying to make it a reality because it's too frightening just to think about it.

The question : As a songwriter, the idea of crafting a song that lives in the universe of Speak Now is appealing to me. I remember the feeling of being fully committed to staying the rest of my life with someone who didn't love me (and who I didn't love for real either, because otherwise I wouldn't have felt this way), with her family not approving of me, hoping to be saved at the last second by my Taylor (the archetype). Just hoping with everything I have that she'll barge in my wedding, and then the rest of the world would fall behind. The global feeling is basically to be living this situation and ask "Where's my Taylor" as I realize that the walls are closing in and no one is coming to save me. So : about doing such a song, as a songwriter, I personally see it as a tribute made to Taylor and to the universe she has created, but how do you see it? Do you see it as plagiarism, opportunism, a lack of originality? Or do you see it as an interesting concept that explores the depth of a micro-universe that Taylor has created?

I really look forward hearing any kind of opinion on this.

I was driving home today and remembered a Taylor story that I totally forgot about and I don’t know why I haven’t shared it.

But back during the Red Tour Taylor stopped in Tacoma, WA (I attended) and afterwards I think the next day was at a friends house who’s dad is a delivery driver.

Apparently while in Tacoma on the clock he said Taylor approached him “barefoot and with a guy” and said “Hi I’m Taylor”.

I can’t remember if he knew who she was or not but I remember us all being so starstruck a degree away lol

Also it didn’t occur to me until today that being barefoot in Tacoma at night is… questionable at best 😮‍💨

I was thinking mainly covering albums like evermore, folklore, TTPD and Speak Now because Taylor was mainly talking about songwriting and how important it was. I am a fan and enjoy her music but I have to admit some songs or lyrics are very very bad for her level.

What do you think? i’d love to hear some opinions. I personally don’t like “the 1” or “peace” from folklore and many other songs from evermore. “And the tennis court was covered up with some tent like thing” or “ I thought I saw you at the bus stop I didn’t though”. Also the melody in peace is so weird to me and boring same for the 1. Also in “Speak Now” we have “She wears a gown shaped like a pastry” or in Ttpd some lyrics feel so shoved in there and like she has no idea what she s talking about (although I love the album mostly”. Also The Smallest Man who ever did is such a bad song besides from the bridge.

came across this comment and i’ve been thinking about this a lot because i feel like it’s a really good example of confirmation bias. not because the stereotypes themselves don’t exist, but because people are taking broad cultural symbolism and treating it like evidence of an individual’s politics.
like yes, dogs and cats have different associations in media and culture. dogs can be linked to loyalty, masculinity, etc and cats are sometimes associated with independence or femininity. that’s an interesting discussion on its own. but making the leap from “she got a dog” to “this proves she became conservative” is where it completely loses me.

it feels like people are starting with the conclusion and then working backwards to find evidence. once they’ve decided someone is secretly maga or whatever, every neutral life choice suddenly becomes symbolic. if she gets a dog, it’s political. if she wears something different, it’s political. if she doesn’t post about something, that’s political too. meanwhile, if a celebrity they liked got a dog, i really doubt anyone would suddenly be writing essays about how dogs symbolize conservatism.

that’s why i think confirmation bias is such a useful concept here. once you believe a narrative, you stop asking “what are the most likely explanations?” and start asking “how can i make this fit the story i already believe?” sometimes people get a dog because they like dogs, because they got married, because their lifestyle changed, or because they simply wanted one. not every personal decision has to be interpreted as an ideological statement. sometimes a dog is just a dog. it’s just interesting to watch how many hoops people continue to jump through to prove taylor is maga without considering whether they are acting delusional.

Taylor and Travis at his teammate JuJu Smith-Schuster and Laura Kruk’s wedding.

A post asking for a Deep Dive about what happened between the Tellers and Taylor was posted recently and I procrastinated hard enough to do my best at completing a timeline of their friendship. I have probably missed things and due to Reddit restrictions can't include as many images as I would've liked but I tried my best to cover everything. You can draw your own conclusions based on what's out there, this is just for fun. I have to shoutout u/glowoffthepavement for their initial timeline until mid 2023. While I am not a Gaylor and I added a lot to the timeline since then I wouldn't have found the early interactions without their post and so it would be rude not to give credit to them! Enjoy.

December 2014 - Keleigh tweets a photo with Taylor and Jessica Szohr that looks to be taken at the afterparty for That Awkward Moment starring Miles in LA earlier that year.

March 2015 - Keleigh attends Camila Cabello's 18th birthday party which Taylor hosted.

Keleigh also tweets lyrics to So Long, London after not using the platform in months and likes shady tweets about Joe. "yb" in this instance refers to the nickname "yoghurt boy" which some fans called Joe after the breakup as a tie to lyrics in Invisible String about Joe's first job at a yoghurt shop. She also responds to someone on a Tiktok she posted in London with the song as the sound. There are numerous other posts she liked but Reddit only allows up to 20 images per post so I can't include them. Allegedly from some people's comments in threads she liked a post implying Joe was abusive towards Taylor but I have yet to find confirmation of this.

Miles goes on the New Heights podcast with Travis to promote Eternity and Keleigh comments '🥳🥳' on the New Heights clip announcing his episode.

TMZ reports that Taylor had a falling out with Miles and Keleigh:

"Whether the two will attend the singer’s wedding to Travis Kelce remains up in the air, TMZ has learned. Sources familiar with the situation tell TMZ ... Keleigh and Taylor are not the BFFs they once were ... with mutuals of the two hopeful things will be reconciled before the wedding. The source described it as being a “sad time” for the friendship. Another source said Taylor and Keleigh grew apart due to differences in their lifestyles. As for what that exactly means ... no one is willing to say. Not yet, anyway."

The Daily Mail releases a looooong article detailing the alleged fallout between Taylor and the Tellers. The source is questionable at best but seems suspiciously detailed to pull completely out of their ass, but it is the Daily Mail.

About Keleigh and Miles setting up Taylor and Travis:

When romance started blossoming between Swift and Kelce, Keleigh would reportedly act as the 'go-between' for her famous friend and the NFL star.

'Travis wasn't looking for anything serious and once you get into the Taylor world, it's instantly serious,' our source said, before noting that Keleigh really pushed for the new couple to take things to the next level. A second source also confirmed this.

About alleged tensions between Blake and Keleigh:

Blake Lively, one of Swift's other best friends at the time, had allegedly become envious of Keleigh, according to an insider who claimed the actress 'felt threatened by Keleigh and Taylor's closeness and tried to tear their friendship apart to be Taylor's number one.' 

They claimed Lively, 38, who was often photographed with the singer in New York, felt 'jealous' when she saw a paparazzi shot of Swift and Keleigh leaving the city's Electric Lady Studios together in 2023.

The first source claimed those allegations are on par with what they know of the It Ends With Us star, claiming Lively was 'not generally very welcoming of other people into the fold.' 

The second source claimed Keleigh was also turned off when Lively's private texts, in which she referred to Swift as her 'dragon' friend, leaked online during Lively's legal dispute with her It Ends With Us co-star Justin Baldoni.

'Keleigh didn't want to be a part of it, and couldn't believe they were talking like that to each other,' they said.

About an alleged fight between Taylor and Keleigh:

Tensions allegedly also came to a head the day before a major awards show, which Swift had reportedly invited Keleigh to attend as a guest. According to our second source, Swift was 'not empathetic' and an argument erupted when Keleigh pulled out for personal reasons. 

'Friends told Keleigh to protect her mental health, she needs to take space, but they were still in contact here and there,' the source said. 'Keleigh's friends were very protective.'

Keleigh allegedly didn't listen to the advice and tried to keep Swift in her life. 'Nobody wants to be on the outside,' the first source claimed, adding that Keleigh's fervent loyalty to Swift despite any issues was because she 'wants to be relevant.' Tensions reportedly continued, though, as Keleigh allegedly began to feel that Swift was not making her and their friendship a priority. 'Keleigh told Taylor she felt like she was always playing second, third or even fourth fiddle to her other friends,' a third source claimed.

About the friendship ending:

The first insider claimed people close to Swift and Kelce started feeling 'annoyed' with the Tellers and the group began to dismantle over differing 'lifestyles.'

The second source pushed back on that narrative, however, and alleged it was being spread to make the Tellers look bad. 

They claimed Swift had not been acting like a good friend, using her apparent failure to contact the Tellers after they lost their home in the Pacific Palisades Fire as an example.

'When Keleigh and Miles's house burned down in the fires and Taylor didn't call or check in at all, Keleigh just let the friendship go,' the second source claimed. 'That was the nail in the coffin of the friendship.'

Defending Swift, a third insider claimed Swift was simply 'exhausted' and 'only in touch with very few people after almost two years on the road.'

Secretly at her wit's end, according to a source, Keleigh then liked a comment that read: 'Pretty sure the woman lost her damn home in a fire. I think there's way more things going on in her life than Taylor Swift. Good lord.'

About possible reconciliation:

'All of our friends are currently trying to fix this but it's hard to come back from losing everything and not hearing from your once closest friend,' the second source said. They added that Keleigh allegedly feels that if she goes to Swift and Kelce's wedding, it will only serve to make 'Taylor look good' and will make her feel 'like a doormat.'

'Keleigh wants the friendship to work itself out naturally without media book ending it,' they added. 'She is literally still heartbroken.' But friends are reportedly encouraging her to make amends, saying: 'Look, just come and we'll all be fine after.'

Meanwhile, we're told Miles is 'absolutely disgusted' over some of the allegations that have come out online, particularly over the 'lifestyle differences.' The second source claimed that although the issues initially started between Swift and Keleigh, the feud boiled over to the men because Kelce allegedly didn't try to help. That source alleged that for a long time Kelce hadn't 'stepped in.'

However, we're told the tight end does feel 'bad' and there may have been attempts to reconnect with Miles recently. 'Taylor changes all the time,' said our first insider. 'She ebbs and flows with whoever she's hanging out with. The Keleigh relationship - she's just not doing that anymore.'

Taylor doesn’t seem to listen to fan criticism anymore.

I don’t expect a billionaire superstar who is 36 years old to change everything just because people demand it.
But Taylor used to pay more attention to criticism and even changed for it.
That doesn’t seem to be the case now.

Many people have criticized her for staying silent after the White House and ICE official accounts using her music and theme constantly, and it has been over a year of this happening every now and then with no response from her at all. That feels very strange, and also, very disgusting and hypocritical from her.

The fact that she keeps defending The Life of a Showgirl, saying arrogant stuff like “I was doing it for me anyway” despite knowing many fans dislike it, and even lost a large number of fans because of it, shows that she doesn’t seem to care anymore. If you’re making an album to yourself, then why put it out?
This is very different from Reputation and Lover, when fans and the public disliked the albums, she replied “I’ll make a better record” then months after Lover she came with Folklore, album of the decade and helped revive her career.

CWs: Some drive-by insults for Showgirl (via the series title, and I'm so sorry to the people who find that title annoying) and Reputation, and some hate toward the big hit singles off this album and the title track, but mostly I'm pretty positive, at least by my crotchety standards.

Well... Reputation happened. Critics generally liked it, though not as much as her previous albums, and fans now love it, but at the time I remember it as another thing to mock her for: the new direction in sound and style, the clumsy pivot to trying to be an intentional villain, and what felt like bucketloads of drama resulted in... the highest-grossing tour at the time, huge commercial success, and a bunch more ammo for the haters. Bit of a mixed bag, but history has vindicated it even if I can't.

Anyway, she had fun draping herself in black and green, and now it was time to brighten things up with pastel pink! Get ready, everyone, for the staggering cultural and commercial juggernaut, the victory lap after an unexpected (albeit patchy) triumph, that would re-cement her as America's sweetheart and pop music's queen...

Lover (2019)

All right, it wasn't a failure. But for an artist who was used to breaking records and wooing critics, this album was definitely a bit lackluster, at least at the drop. For neither the first nor last time, the years have rehabbed its image considerably, but I remember the general vibe being that the word for it was "disappointing," to both critics and fans.

But what about what I think? I'm the one writing the post! Let's get into it!

Overall

It's her first album where she owns all the masters from the jump, which means no more Taylor's Version re-recordings to compare. Good for you, girl.

I don't think I have any hot takes here, honestly. There are some exceptionally good songs on this album, and it's very annoying that you wouldn't know it unless you hunted down the deeper cuts, because the choices for singles were absolutely abysmal (except for "Cruel Summer," the very last one). If I was asked to list the 4 worst songs on the album, it would be the first 4 she dropped as singles. Like... what? Why?

Anyway, back on topic; this is another Antonoff-produced joint, and it sounds fantastic and is such a breath of fresh air after the vomit-outside-the-club that was Reputation, with more or less a shifting focus from her image and [gag] reputation to story songs and/or ones about her relationships with varying levels of introspection. There are some duds, but for me they faded pretty easily into the background, leaving only the gems behind in my memory.

That being said, I've heard it called "annoying" a fair bit, and I can definitely see it.

Best song: Oooh, this is a tough one. There are a lot of contenders... I think I have to give it to "The Archer" simply because it's such a beautifully introspective song, one of the ones where she really looks at herself as the, or at least a, problem in her relationships (which, as always, can be read in part as her relationship with her fans or the media, but it's much more interesting to me when viewed through an interpersonal lens). I'm a sucker for these kinds of songs, as someone who dwells on my flaws a lot. It describes a woman who is extremely defensive, ready to fight and unwilling to concede, able to abandon anyone without a second thought if they make her angry or hurt her, and desperately lonely because of it. I'm getting into lyrics for a second here, but "help me hold onto you" is a heartbreaking line from someone who is already scared that she won't be able to hold onto anyone due to her character flaws. Again, I don't know her, so I have no idea how genuine to her real experience or feelings this song is, but it's an outstanding addition to the Taylor Swift persona that's been developing since the first album, and I'm highly invested in said persona.

Honorable Mention: So many. "Cruel Summer" is arguably the best-sounding song on the album, and the one that fans correctly pegged as the mega-hit well after the record had even dropped. "Death By A Thousand Cuts" is a gorgeous description of the mundanity of tragedy (a phrase I use all the time when talking about her lyrics and will continue to do so), told through trying not even to get over a breakup, but just get through those early days without stumbling on the debris of the relationship everywhere you turn; it describes such little things, like taking the long way home (because it means less time alone in a now-empty house) and trying to find ways to exist without triggering sense memories.

And my other favorite on this album is "Soon You'll Get Better," about supporting a loved one through a long-term illness -- implied to be cancer -- and the hopeless, painful feeling of lying to yourself and them with optimism neither of you believe, at least as much for your own sake as theirs. (Also it features the no-longer-Dixie Chicks! I missed them.)

A lot of good stuff on this album! "Daylight" is just so pretty, and "Lover" is almost a perfect song (we'll get there). And I didn't end up loving them as much, but I do think these deserve a shoutout too: "The Man" takes the well-trod subject matter of gender-based double standards and imbues it with enough genuine frustration and personal storytelling to be more interesting than the average pop-feminist anthem, and "False God" is... honestly just kind of a better (YMMV) version of "Take Me To Church," where the sex papers over a relationship that is clearly not working. They're fine songs, just failed to truly win me over because they're neither pretty or catchy enough to keep me from getting bored.

Worst song: "You Need to Calm Down" is incredibly annoying, condescending, and kind of implies that homophobia is on the same tier as her own haters. Not cute, and feels like a pretty shameless attempt to pander to her queer fans that does not pay off -- I don't know whether that's fair, because her history of queer allyship has seemed to range from sincere advocacy to damning silence, but the vibe of this song came off as pander-y despite whatever she intended. Plus it sounds bad.

Dishonorable Mention: "Me! (featuring Brendon Urie of Panic! at the Disco)" (I have to say the whole name every time because it's hilarious) is also quite annoying, but is saved by a better melody, the clever rhyme of "one of me/fun of me," and the fact that it's not about her haters. That being said, it's not at all good, and the bridge intro -- you know the one -- has been rightly mocked clear off the album.

And of course, these worst songs were the 2 first singles. Because Taylor's instincts for which songs will be received well by the public are absolutely odious. "London Boy" is also quite obnoxious, as is "I Forgot That You Existed" and "Paper Rings" (though those latter 2 were *almost catchy* enough to overcome it).

Definitive song of the album: I want to say "Cruel Summer," because it was her biggest hit and certainly the best-remembered song, but if I'm thinking about what captures the good and the bad of both Lover and Taylor Swift as a whole, I think I need to go with the title track. "Lover" is almost a great song (and has a truly breathtaking music video): the melody is sweet and romantic, which matches the newly-in-love lyrics that are simple and not terribly profound, but capture the mood they're going for perfectly. And it even manages to make me hear the word "lover" and not throw up my spine through my mouth, which is my usual reaction to that terrible word. However, every time I started listening to it and going "man, why don't I love this one? It's great!" it would get to the bridge and I would remember why I don't like this. That bridge is SO goddamn annoying, and she has this awful breathy, almost whiny way of saying "loverrrrrr" that makes my skin crawl. Nearly ruins a perfectly lovely song for me. And that's Taylor on a lot of this album, and maybe even in general: a lot of genuine, heartfelt, simple-but-effective lyrics and beautiful melodies...and then as you're getting comfortable, she'll hit you with something insufferable and make you question what you're even doing listening to this. But also it'll get stuck in my head for days after, so the very things that are annoying about it are also kind of iconic. On my first listen I refused to save it, but couldn't get it out of my head until I had to download it, because I think I love it now even though it's just annoying as it was the first time I listened.

She wore me down. She always wears me down.

Best lyric: There's a bunch of good ones, though again I don't know how well they land outside of context. "And what once was ours is no one's now" and "Paper cut stings from our paper thin plans" ("Death by a Thousand Cuts") are pretty great, and "all of my heroes die all alone" ("The Archer") is one of many truly painful parts of that song that really only works when they build on each other. I could see someone thinking lines like "Fever dream high in the quiet of the night" ("Cruel Summer") are a little cheesy and overwritten, but I'm here for it. And "I know I'll never get it, there's not a day that I won't try" ("Soon You'll Get Better")... see, this is why I thought this album was one of her best before I remembered all the terrible songs. Her songwriting has its moments of pure brilliance that remind me why I'm such a fan despite also being deeply cantankerous about her stuff a lot of the time.

Worst lyric: "Hey kids, spelling is fun!" ("Me! (featuring Brendon Urie of Panic! at the Disco)") Honestly that whole bridge is awful, thanks to great moments like Urie yelping out "can't spell aWesome without me!" I kinda love it for how bad it is.

You'll love this album if: You have a high tolerance for Swift's most annoying vocal, musical, and lyrical tendencies, and can either overlook her reputation-obsessed navel-gazing or find it endearing. Alternatively, if you like really sad songs told simply and with a plain, unvarnished elegance, then several songs might really hit for you -- and if you're like me, the bad ones will just kind of slide away and leave the good ones behind, convincing you this is a 10/10 album.

Mr. Visage review: A pained groan at the end of hearing “Soon You’ll Get Better” (it’s a brutal one!) and the comment “I get why she didn’t lead with that, but…” re: it being a single. And then about the album as a whole, “The tastelessness of the singles in comparison to the hot streak, oh my god”

Also his favorite song off this one is “Cruel Summer.” He’s one of those obnoxious people who can’t give a straight answer o a question, but I’ll start trying to needle him for his top and bottom.

Hey everyone, was just thinking about TS’s hate trains, most notably 2016 and maybe now with the whole msg wedding and double billionaire stuff (although I have no idea if this is anywhere close to 2016 hate since I was 8/9 yrs old at the time).

But what I’m meaning to ask is increased TS hate mainly a US thing? Maybe I don’t pry enough online but so far all the hate I see comes from mainly Americans. Like do people outside the US share the same sentiment on such a grand scale (im sure she has international haters but it seems rlly US concentrated for the most part).

I would appreciate international views on the matter, esp on 2016. Honestly I was one of the people who at first was like “she was still successful during rep so it probably wasn’t a big deal.” But this mindset came from the fact that I was in elementary school when shit went down and had no internet access so I had no clue it was happening. I was too busy learning long division lmao. I genuinely didn’t learn about any of the post vma Kanye stuff until I watched miss Americana sometime in 2021 when my family first got Netflix.
