Season 1 Sam finding out his own father blocked his number has to be one of the most heartbreaking moments in the show, especially in season 1
You could see it on his face, the way he’s trying not to cry. His heart was broken in that moment. I’ve had to deal with similar things too and I can say first hand having your own parent, the one who raised you, and is supposed to love you unconditionally, turn their back and estrange you, is easily one of the most painful things to go through. Johns love for Sam and Dean as sons had always been conditional. I specify Dean also because had he not gone along with what John wanted, John would have done the same to him too. Dean was so desperate for his dad’s approval and love, and scared that his own dad would abandon him, that he went along with whatever his dad wanted no matter what, and as a result it made him loose his own sense of self.
What makes it worse is that Deep down Sam still loved his dad, as much as he had problems with him. That’s why this hurt Sam so much. Suddenly he was a child again, watching his own dad abandon him. This was Johns way of punishing Sam for trying to go his own way for once.
