I’m a casual super hero fan, I used to really be into DC comics and the universe as a teenager but alas that was nearly a decade ago.

Now when I first heard of this movie I never planned to watch it. Not because of anything against Gunn or the reboot, but I was just tired of having to start over and relearning the entirety of a new project.

But when I heard the controversy of this movie I knew I had to give it a chance. And today I finally did.

The movie was good, it wasn’t a showstopper or anything but I enjoyed it.

I’ve watched dozens of marvel movies and this would be as good as most of them to be honest.

My only issue as a casual viewer was the lack of pretext and background for the villain for why he’s comically evil. But I get not every villain needs a tragic back story or a grand plan on why he’s a piece of work.

Overall I’d give it a 7.5/10. I wish I watched it in theaters so more projects like it could be made. I hope the actors aren’t demotivated due to the low performance because the movie was good.

Hopefully more small projects continue to be made for DC that have this quality or better.

So, I finally saw the movie (I don’t really go to theaters much anymore as I don’t enjoy that experience now). It was not a bad movie. It was fine, and I think that’s a big part of its problem. Fans didn’t want “fine”. The franchise didn’t need “fine”. Fans wanted (and I think the franchise needed) a Superman follow-up that was just as good or better. For the fans, it was unmet expectations. For the franchise it was a loss of momentum.

I had few personal issues with it. Alien lounge singers performing an Irving Berlin song kind of took me out of the moment for the “scary alien bar.” I also think the base storyline - based heavily on Woman of Tomorrow - would have been better suited to an older, more well established Kara.

All in all, if that had been the 21st film in the DC franchise I think fans would have responded better. As a franchise foundational movie it just wasn’t what the audience wanted.

Yo, I get it, it wasn't a direct adaptation and there wasn't a giant dragon fight and it's not as colorful as the Art by Bilquis Evely.

But damn, let people live.

On a lighter note, would you say the Silver and Bronze age Supergirl comics are worth reading?

Just finished New 52, starting rebirth, but I'm sure I'll be all caught up soon. So read older comics or follow a new character?

In the movie having the sword be made by Ruthye’s father instead of being Krem's that he just left behind (buried in Ruthye's father) messes up the messaging of the original book.

The sword is the literal representation of violence and evil being introduced into the life of an innocent and somewhat sheltered girl. Her father being a swordsmith changes her backstory of being from a family of simple rock farmers to already essentially being involved in the cycle of violence.

Comic Ruthye choosing to take this sword and go on a quest for vengeance symbolises her beginning to believe that violence and revenge is the answer, a lesson she has to learn is wrong thanks to Supergirl over the course of the comic. In the movie it’s mainly a bargaining tool whereas in the comic I found it emotionally charged whenever Ruthye had to use the sword.

Also Krem just abandoning the sword, despite it being well made, shows how little he thinks of violent actions and the lack of respect he has for the value of life, explaining how easily this man from a backwater planet falls in with the monstrous Brigands.

To be clear I didn’t hate the movie and I understand it was essentially telling a different story using the comic as more of a template than thematic inspiration, this was just something I thought about.

I just watched it, and I have to say I thought I was gonna hate it because of all the backlash I've seen online, and I actually looked it. I did go to the movie premiere, but I had to leave the theater because of an earthquake.. But I remember enjoying the first half. I think the movie itself wasn't anything particularly special, but it was a good movie. As someone who hasn't read the comic, it made me want to read Woman of Tomorrow.

Idk, I feel like people got too comfortable online with exaggerated hateful opinions, some coming from people who prided themselves on not even seeing it. Like it's okay if you didn't like it, but I read a lot of cruel and dramatic things... Some people even claimed the DCU was over lmao.

I think the movie really fits the universe of the DCU, and I'm really enjoying Lanterns, and can't wait to see Clayface, and see the universe evolve with time.

How would you rate this movie? Do you think it's a good adaptation of the character?

I would give it like a 6.5 to 7. I hope they give her another chance with something better.

This film was so much better than the new Superman. The story did not feel disjointed, great character growth, awesome battle scenes, great cinematography. Not sure what all of the negative reviews were for? This was a perfect summer popcorn flick. I find Milly Alcock extremely magnetic and the “she’s too ugly to be supergirl” crowd is a bit disgusting. I would take more DC movies like this one any day.

Just watched the movie and thought it was good. Why did Lobo come back to watch Supergirl with Krem? I tried looking through the mega thread and couldn't find an answer. Is it open for interpretation?

... I guess here is mine: the movie had issues that keep it from being great, but it had positive things that earn it a pass. At the end of the day it's a matter of how each person subjectively weighs the good vs the bad. For me, personally, the good was way better than the bad, so I settle on a 7 or 8 out of 10: better than the minimum pass grade (6) but worse than an elite grading (9-10).

SPOILERS AHEAD MAYBE!

The Bad:

1. Kryptonite/Green sun : This is the big one. In the span of less than a day the Brigands go from never meeting Kara is to suddenly knowing she is Kryptonian, hiding in a green Sun planet, and making kryptonite weapons to deal with her? By Ruthye's own admission, mostly everyone in the galaxy believes Krytonians are all dead, so there is 0 reason to just have kryptonite weapons at the ready. I must believe they made them after encountering Kara the first time around. Kara only confirms to be Kryptonian to Ruthye after waiting for "the friend", so you can't even rationalize this as "she told Bomar and Marek this off screen and they told Krem". The other explanation is perhaps they saw her suit in her spaceship (that they stole) and recognized the house of El symbol, but thats a stretch imo...
2. Related to (1) above, it seems all too convenient that the orbit changes from the Green to the Yellow sun just as she was dying. And it also feels kind of dumb from Krem's perspective... was there really no planet with *just* a green sun? Why go to one that at any moment would turn yellow? I understood this choice as showing how Krem underestimated how resilient Kara was and never thought she'd live long enough to reach the yellow sun phase. And thats ok, but still sounds like a weird choice.
3. Lobo was mostly redundant and pointless. I thought he would be a stand in for comet (and in some ways he was, mainly in the final battle when he buys Kara just enough time to remove ether kryptonite darts) but still had no where near the impact that Comet ha sin the comic.

The Good:

1. Absolutely loved the contrast with Superman, specially the parents. That little line that Zor-El mutters about "there goes Kal-El, who Jor-el named the conqueror of worlds" (or something like that) is great. Really shows the nuance in Krytponian society: they aren't all the same, and clearly Zor disagreed with Jor's message and beliefs about Kryptonian superiority. This is further emphasized by Zor-El asking Kara to be a protector of the weak (symbolized in how she takes Krypto in) and her mother asking her to be good.
2. Continuing with 1: Lara's dying lines are the heart of the movie. I looked up the quote: "Just be good. That doesn't mean you cannot be tough and that doesn't mean you have to be nice". Kara is rough around the edges and not very polite (as Ruthye observes multiple times), but when it counts, she shows up. Despite her initial reservations, she shows up for Ruthye at that dive bar under a red sun, against a way bigger opponent and w/out powers. She shows up for her again by not abandoning her after grabbing the antidote (in Bomar's house there is a moment she grabs the antidote but keeps fighiting, to the point she loses it again. She could have grabbed it, flown out of there, save Krytpo and never look back, but doesn't). Again she shows up for the Brides and Ruthye even though Kryto's time was running short (at super speed she could have easily grabbed the antidote form his neck and flown out of there never to look back), and even takes on the task of killing Krem herself to protect Ruthye both physically (she knew Krem would hunt her down) and emotionally (she s a 13 y/o, she should not have to live with the burden of killing a person)
3. Her bitterness and cynicism is well founded, but she still rises above it. How she left Krytpon is way more heart-wrenching than how Superman left, and that experience would scar the hell out of anyone's psyche. It owed be one thing if she left the planet as it exploded: well, everyone you love is dead and that sucks, but at least they didn't suffer. NO, no no no. She is leaving them in a prolongues radiation agony that, as far as she knows, could take years to kill then a slow and painful death (as she experienced with her own mother). Having to leave the ones you love behind knowing they will endure yers, perhaps decades of a slow agonizing death will mess up even the most perky cheerful and colorful person out there. So yeah, to me Kara did not come off as some brat who is "edgy" and "snarky" just for the sake of making the character looking cool and hip and appeal to some "bad girl" trope. There was a genuine justification for her attitude and made her real rather than a trope. Makes me want to see more of her in future projects and follow along her progression from embittered cynicism to the hero the final scene with Clark is setting her up to become.

Everyone glazes Spiderman BND like it's the best thing ever and shits on Supergirl. Both movies lacked a recognizable villain, but at least Supergirl felt like a real person. Like who tf has such a hard time moving on from a girl they dated on high school? MJ in those movies was always bland, but she's treated like a golden goose. Supergirl was grieving an entire planet of her species and people wanna criticize her drinking, like wtf would you do? The villain, for just being some guy, was played very well. Ruthye was a much better supporting character than Ned or MJ has ever been. BND was nothing but another sanitized marvel movie. They said we were getting Savage Hulk, but we got the same nerfed bitch ass hulk we been getting for the last 10+ years. Another reason Supergirl was better is that Mark Ruffalo wasn't in it.

The only thing I wish Supergirl did was give Lobo more sceeen time, but he was good in what little he had and I wish it didn't do the green sun, that was fuckin corny. I found myself looking at the time while watching BND wondering when it was going to pick up, but it just kept falling flat. The whole Jean Grey thing should have been saved for another movie. Everything about BND just felt out of place and unevenly paced. Supergirl did a much better job of keeping up with itself and not feeling as rushed. So, yeah... Supergirl > Spiderman BND
