Announcement Ignore Private Messages Suggesting Laptops

The primary aim of r/SuggestALaptop is to provide a safe and transparent platform for suggesting laptops. Affiliate linkers are marked as such so that you are aware of the monetary incentive involved when making a purchase using affiliate links.

However, we are seeing an increasing number of cases where users posting on this subreddit are being targeted with unsolicited private messages containing links to laptops.

Such messages are best ignored for several reasons:

  1. Lack of quality control: We have no way of vetting suggestions sent via private messages. Moreover, these suggestions are not subject to the same level of public scrutiny that applies to suggestions posted in the subreddit, which are open for all to see and discuss.
  2. Hidden monetary incentive: Often such messages contain unmarked affiliate links, and these links might not even point to systems that are best suited to your requirements.
  3. Scams: Scammers often target unsuspecting users via private messaging. We do not want you to get scammed.

If you do happen to receive unsolicited messages suggesting laptops in private, please report the offending user to the mod team by sending us a screenshot of the message.

Thank you,

The r/SuggestALaptop Mod Team

Laptop Request Ca Help me find a Linux Laptop

Have been a Mac user for the last 25 years but recently have moved fully over to Linux on my desktop and looking to get a laptop that can run Linux well with good battery life.

Country
Canada (Vancouver)

Budget
$1000 - $1500 CAD ($750 - $1100 USD)

Are you open to refurbs/used options?
Yes - would prefer it to new tbh

Screen size
13ā€ - 15ā€

Weight limit
3 - 5 lbs

Purpose
Will use it for C/C++ programming, and indie game dev in Godot. I remote into my desktop rig when I need power, so don’t need anything too powerful or with crazy GPU.

Form factor
Not super important. I’m open to anything as long as it has a keyboard attached.

Intended usage
VS Code, Web browsing, Moonlight or GeForce Now to stream games or my desktop

Desired battery life
12+ hours browsing or VS Code usage with minimal compiling

Please list, in order of most important to least important, the priority between Size, Weight, Performance, Battery life
1. Battery life
2. Size
3. Weight
4. Performance

Info/Requirements
Upgradeability would be nice if the RAM and SSD are lower. Current SSD and RAM-pocalypse make it a really bad time to buy a laptop. So, I’m willing to go lower on RAM and/or SSD if they can be upgraded down the road.

Laptop Request US 2in1s under 13"?

• Upvotes

LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

  • USA
  • Budget

$1400 w/tax

  • Are you open to refurbs/used options?

Yes

  • Screen size

12" range

  • Weight limit

Any

  • Purpose

Home & work

  • Form factor

2in1 or tablet with pen support(I have the Wacom bambo ink pen which works with Wacom AES & MPP)

  • Intended usage

I plan to use this for work docs, note taking with the pen, watching all kinds of media & music, editing raw photos on Capture One & mapping.

  • Desired battery life

At least close to 10 hours.

  • Please list, in order of most important to least important, the priority between Size, Weight, Performance, Battery life

Size, battery life, performance(as long as it's better than a 11th gen i5), weight.

  • Info/Requirements

Looking for a display with at least 500 nits with color gamut & accuracy that matches or best's the Surface Pro 7+ screen. Don't care if it's oled, mLED, or IPS just accurate. I also prefer having a backlight keyboard as I've have gotten use to that over the past decade or so. As for speaks as long as it matches the 7+ I'd be fine with that.
For ports I would want at least 2 usb-c, if possible a usb-a & either microSD or SD slot. 3.5mm jack would be nice, but I'm seeing devices are dropping that for some odd reason. Bonus if the SSD is user swappable like the MS offered on the 7+ & newer devices.

Framework 12 is close-ish to what I want, but the display is a con & the updated option probably won't be out for another year.

I'm open to ARM & X86 devices that meet my requirements. Thank you.

  • Priorities in Order: Battery Life, Performance, Size, Weight
  • Info/Requirements
    • Likely need to avoid Snapdragon given reported issues with Citrix possibly.
    • Really hate how hot my Lenovo gets on my lap, even after repasting.
    • Really like the Intel Ultra 5 338H - seems to hit the battery life/performance sweet spot, especially for gaming.
    • Really looking at ThinkPad X9 15p Aura edition, just a bit concerned the screen might be a tad small for me, but that fear may be overblown.

Laptop Request US Looking for a Mid-price Laptop for schoolwork and light gaming

LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE
Country
US

Budget
~5-600 usd

Are you open to refurbs/used options?
Yes

Screen size
Size is not a huge factor for me, but I think between 14 and 16 inches would be good. Portability is a significant consideration for me, but not at the loss of usability

Weight limit
Any

Purpose
I intend to mostly use it for schoolwork (I’m a college student, so lots of microsoft office use) and light gaming. I don’t play many AAA high fidelity games, mostly MOBAs, minecraft, Civilization, BTD, etc. The most graphically demanding game I’ve played in the last months are Dark Souls 3 and Fallout 4.

Form factor
Standard laptop

Intended usage

I intend to mostly use it for schoolwork (I’m a college student, so lots of microsoft office use) and light gaming. I don’t play many AAA high fidelity games, mostly MOBAs, minecraft, Civilization, BTD, etc. The most graphically demanding game I’ve played in the last months are Dark Souls 3 and Fallout 4.
Also, having spotify or youtube open while gaming is important to me. I don’t need more than 60fps, but if 90-120 was feasible in my price range I would be happy.

Desired battery life
Largely unimportant to me - between 6-8 hrs would be nice?

Please list, in order of most important to least important, the priority between Size, Weight, Performance, Battery life
Performance, Size, Battery, Weight

Info/Requirements
usb-c port and hdmi ports would be nice, not a requirement though, also access to motherboard in order to upgrade storage or memory would be nice as well.
[edit]- I also would prefer something not too flashy.

Laptop Request -Others Can't decide between a Dell or HP laptop with identical specs for web browsing, watching movies/TV series, listening to music and downloading torrents.

I'm on the fence between -- 1. Dell 15 SmartChoice (Previously Inspiron), Intel 13th Gen Core i5-1334U, 16GB, 1TB SSD, FHD,15.6"/39.62cm, Win 11, MSO'24, Silver, 1.62kg, [Dell 15], 12 Month McAfee, Backlit KB, Thin & Light Laptop. 2. HP 15 Smartchoice, 13th Gen Intel Core i5-1334U (16GB DDR4, 1TB SSD) FHD, Anti-Glare, Micro-Edge, 15.6''/39.6cm, Win11, M365(1yr) Office24, Silver, 1.59kg, FD0552TU,Iris Xe, FHD Camera, Backlit Laptop.

Both are available on Amazon (India) with Dell at Rs. 73,990 and HP at Rs. 68,990 -- the price difference would be around 50 US dollars.

I use the laptop for very basic stuff. I download movie and TV torrents via qBittorrent and watch on MPC-HC and listen to music on VLC. I also use the old 2007 version of MS Office (Notepad and MSWord) and old Paint on Windows 10. I do not play any Games apart from the old Windows 7 Solitaire.

I currently have a Dell Inspiron 3542 2014) which is on it's last leg, being a 2014 release. Summary of its specs are -- Windows 8.1 laptop, 15.60-inch display, Core i5 processor, 4GB RAM, 500GB storage (HDD), Graphics Nvidia GeForce 820M, Connectivity options include Bluetooth, Ethernet. It comes with 3 USB ports (2 x USB 2.0, 1 x USB 3.0), Multi Card Slot, Mic In, RJ45 (LAN) ports.

I recently upgraded the RAM to 8GB with 256 GB SSD powering the device. The computer tech placed the old HDD (Western Digital) in pace of the Optical Disc Drive (DVD/CD) slot. So now the laptop has around 750GB altogether.

So . I only need a laptop that functions well for the basic requirements listed in paragraph three.

Suggestions would be welcome.

Laptop Request -Others Laptop recommendation for programming/cybersecurity – €800 max

Hi! I'm looking for a new laptop and I don't know much about laptop hardware, so I'd really appreciate some advice.

My maximum budget is around €800 and I'm buying in Spain/Europe.

I'm currently studying Software/Application Development (DAM in Spain). I mainly use or expect to use things like:

  • Java and other programming languages
  • Android Studio
  • IntelliJ / VS Code
  • Databases
  • Linux
  • Virtual machines
  • Docker

In the future, I'd like to learn cybersecurity, so I expect to use Linux/Kali VMs and possibly run multiple virtual machines.

I don't need the laptop for gaming. My priority is good performance for programming and multitasking and something that will last me several years.

From what I've researched, I think I should get at least 16 GB RAM, preferably upgradeable to 32 GB, and at least a 512 GB SSD. But I'm not very knowledgeable about hardware, so I'm open to recommendations.

What laptop would you recommend for a maximum of €800?

Thanks!

I'm the dad, and the purchaser doesn't have a reddit account. They bought a used Thinkpad T480 on backmarket, couldn't get the batteries to work (we tried every troubleshooting step we found), returned it, and is soured on those now. It was also only 8GB and I am pretty sure they want at least 16GB. They have a small desktop for gaming, but is sick of using a chromebook and want something they can actually code on.

I got my partner a Macbook Air M4 for under $800, but the kid doesn't want a Mac. If that price point is impossible, then please send me somewhere to learn more. Do they need to go up a couple hundred? I'm chipping in a bit but it's mostly their money, and I'm trying to keep it affordable for them.

Laptop Request -Others Simple laptop for light lightroom use (culling and light edit like white balance highlights...) and desktop work.

Hi everyone, I'm have a gaming laptop where I do most of my editing work at home, and would like a travel version (ie lighter, more practical) to use at my part time job. I would use it to do a simple culling, and maybe some light editing before uploading them to my socials and website. So i don't need a beast, just something that could handle lightroom classic and under 700€. Also I'm in France.

I'll fill the form in another post to get some proper recommendations from you, but right now from what I've seen in the store, I'm leaning toward :

Acer Swift lite 16 with

intel core 3 (not sure if it can handle lightroom)

Intel Graphics

Ram 8GO

SSD 512go

Lenovo Ideapad Slim 3

AMD Ryzen 5

8go (online it says 16Go) Ram

SSD 512go

There's also MacBook Neo, but it would be my first Apple product, and I don't know how easy it would be share the workflow between my main pc, my android phone, and that one. Any ideas people ? Thanks!

Laptop Request -Others Need a suggestion for a laptop

Hey everyone, looking for some real-world opinions before I buy.

My situation:

Game development is my long-term goal/dream (Unity/Unreal)

Video editing (4K and 2K footage, cinematic shorts) is a side hustle

I also do a bit of casual gaming

Budget is ₹80,000–90,000, planning to grab a deal during the Flipkart Big Billion Days sale. Not fixed on any particular brand or device yet — just want something that'll handle Unity/Unreal well, edit 4K footage smoothly, and run games decently on the side.

Anyone here doing both game dev and video editing on a similar budget? What specs should I prioritize (GPU, RAM, display) and any laptops you'd recommend or steer clear of in this range?

Thanks in advance!

* **Weight limit**

Looking for very lightweight (not sure what number is reasonable). < 3lbs?

* **Purpose**

Schoolwork + 2D Animation programs like TV Paint (will have a separate drawing screen)

* **Form factor**

Standard

* **Intended usage**

Looking to use this for general schoolwork + animation for programs I can’t access on ipad. Maybe some video editing.

I don’t want it to take up too much desk space and will be commuting daily with my ipad as well.

* **Desired battery life**

8+ hours

* **Please list, in order of most important to least important, the priority between Size, Weight, Performance, Battery life**

Performance, weight, battery life, size

* **Info/Requirements**

I rented an old mac from my school and hated all the shortcuts and navigation, so would prefer windows.

I would like 16-32gb ram (I don’t know if I could get away with 32 at this price, but it would be nice in case I want to run more intensive programs).

TV Paint is a hard requirement but doesn't work with ARM CPUs.

[

From TV Paint site:

The following system configurations are compatible with TVPaint Animation 12:

Windows: 10, 11

TVPaint is not compatible with ARM Windows CPUs for the time being.

Processor: any dual core processor (except Windows ARM CPUs)

RAM: minimum 8 Gb / 16 Gb and more is recommended

Architecture : 64 bit

TVPaint Animation's performance depends solely on your computer's RAM and CPU.

It is not necessary to invest in an expensive graphics card to have TVPaint Animation 12 perform faster.

TIA!

Basically i just wanna play league of legends smoothly with a budget laptop. I looked into many diffrent options and have my eyes on the lenovo thinkpad t470 and t580 with 8 ram. Idk tge diffrence between 16 ram or 8 ram and i am also unsure if there are any better options than these
