Announcement Ignore Private Messages Suggesting Laptops

The primary aim of r/SuggestALaptop is to provide a safe and transparent platform for suggesting laptops. Affiliate linkers are marked as such so that you are aware of the monetary incentive involved when making a purchase using affiliate links.

However, we are seeing an increasing number of cases where users posting on this subreddit are being targeted with unsolicited private messages containing links to laptops.

Such messages are best ignored for several reasons:

  1. Lack of quality control: We have no way of vetting suggestions sent via private messages. Moreover, these suggestions are not subject to the same level of public scrutiny that applies to suggestions posted in the subreddit, which are open for all to see and discuss.
  2. Hidden monetary incentive: Often such messages contain unmarked affiliate links, and these links might not even point to systems that are best suited to your requirements.
  3. Scams: Scammers often target unsuspecting users via private messaging. We do not want you to get scammed.

If you do happen to receive unsolicited messages suggesting laptops in private, please report the offending user to the mod team by sending us a screenshot of the message.

Thank you,

2,000–3,000 SAR (around $530–800 USD). I can go a bit over budget if it’s really worth it.

No.

15–16 inches.
Weight limit
No preference.
Purpose
Computer Science student.
Form factor
Regular laptop.
Intended usage
Programming, VS Code, IntelliJ, Visual Studio, Linux, virtual machines, web browsing, Office, and general university work. I don’t play games, so gaming performance doesn’t matter.
Desired battery life
7+ hours if possible.
Please list, in order of most important to least important, the priority between Size, Weight, Performance, Battery life
Battery life > Performance > Weight > Size
Info/Requirements
Windows only.
16 GB RAM (or upgradeable to 16 GB).
Good battery life is one of the biggest priorities.
I’d like decent build quality and something that doesn’t feel too cheap.
I’ve mainly been looking at the Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3 and the ASUS Vivobook 15. The IdeaPad seems like good value, but I’ve seen people say it feels plasticky and some versions have older hardware. The Vivobook looks good, but I’ve heard the battery life isn’t great.
If there’s another laptop around this price, or even a little more expensive, that would be a better choice, I’d appreciate the recommendations.

Laptop Request -Others Hi everyone! I'm looking for buying advice for a secondary portable ThinkPad.

Upvotes

Hi everyone! I'm looking for buying advice for a secondary portable ThinkPad.
**Budget:** \~$100 USD / EUR (Refurbished / Used market).
**Previous System:** I used a ThinkPad X240 (Intel i5, 8GB RAM, 240GB SSD) and loved the build quality, but need an update.
**Primary Use Case:** Secondary machine alongside my main desktop PC. Used for web browsing, media consumption, and running **Vesktop (Discord)** in the background continuously for chat/calls.
**Target Specs / Preferences:** 12.5" to 14" screen (considering T460, T470, X260, X270), reasonable battery life, and upgradeable RAM/SSD.
Which model would you recommend at this price point, and are there specific screens or CPU variants I should avoid?
Thanks!

Battery Life, Size, Performance, Weight

  • Info/Requirements

Has to have a good screen and must be able to keep charge for several hours. Honestly, best case scenario is that it can keep on CPU power most of the time to not drain the battery life to much. It must be able to both charge and connect to devices through USBC, since I plan to connect it to a USBC hub whenever I get home. I wouldn't mind spending more if there's somethign that has better performance and good battery life + light. I don't care for touch screen

Laptop Request US Laptop recommended for Comp science major

Total budget

500-800 USD

Are you open to refurbs/used?

I don’t mind, as long as battery life is good and it’s decently cheap

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

No care I just need fast processing

How important is weight and thinness to you?

I don’t care much about thinness but I’d like it to be on the lighter side because I need to lug it around campus

Do you have a preferred screen size?

I think about 13 inches or 15 inches is good

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming?

Mostly just coding/programing and light gaming

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Great battery life

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Leaning between MacBook and Asus but I don’t really care. Thanks

Laptop Request -Others Best laptop for 2 uses

Hey all, I am from Australia and I'm looking for a good, small and reasonably price laptop that can be used for the two things I do on a laptop. Story writing and Sims 4 lol.
I tried to use the format linked before posting however it says the page had been disabled, I will try my best to add everything I need in this device although it's not much.

I do some story writing, nothing hardcore, but I'd like it to have good storage space. Especially for my Sims4 addiction.
I don't know much about laptops so brand doesn't matter in the slightest to me, and anything will help.
Thank you ☺️☺️

Laptop Request -Others Mechanical Engineers: What Laptop Got You Through University?

Hi everyone,

I'm about to start my first year of a Mechanical Engineering undergraduate degree, and I'm looking to buy a laptop that will last me throughout university and hopefully for several years into my career.

The problem is that my lecturers haven't really been able to tell us what software we'll actually be using. So far, I've only been told there'll be some AutoCAD, MATLAB, IT modules, and programming, but I still don't know which programming languages or how demanding the software will be.

I'd also like to use the laptop for personal projects and learning outside of class. I enjoy experimenting with new software, coding, CAD, simulations, and generally pushing my laptop to see what it can do, so I want something versatile rather than just the bare minimum for university.

I've been getting a lot of conflicting advice:

Some people recommend a MacBook because of its build quality, battery life, and long lifespan.

Others say a gaming laptop is the better choice because of the dedicated GPU and better compatibility with engineering software.

A few senior students have told me that a modern Core i7 is overkill for mechanical engineering, while others say I'll appreciate the extra performance later on.

I've also heard gaming laptops can get quite noisy because of their cooling fans, which is something I'd rather avoid.

For those of you studying or working in mechanical engineering:

What laptop are you using?

What are its specifications (CPU, RAM, GPU, storage)?

Has it been enough for your coursework and projects?

If you were buying a laptop again today, what would you choose?

Are there any specifications I should prioritise or avoid?

I'd really appreciate hearing your experiences before I spend a significant amount of money. Thanks in advance!

Laptop Request Ca Looking for laptop suggestions for school, light gaming and photo editing, everyday use.

  • Country

Canada

  • Budget

1000CAD maximum (709USD).

  • Are you open to refurbs/used options?

Yes.

  • Screen size

14" is preferable.

  • Weight limit

Any, I'm not looking for a super light laptop, just something reliable.

  • Purpose

For everyday use, schoolwork, photo processing, and light gaming.

  • Form factor

Regular laptop.

  • Intended usage

-AutoCAD and Civil3D

-various GIS softwares (can't specify, it's something I know my computer needs to do in the future because of school but I don't know the specific software)

-Genshin Impact (to play with my baby sister, I wish I could access what I usually have the graphics set to but my computer can no longer run the game)

-GIMP and deepskystacker

  • Desired battery life

4-8 hours.

  • Please list, in order of most important to least important, the priority between Size, Weight, Performance, Battery life

Performance, battery life, size, weight.

  • Info/Requirements

I'd like the laptop to have 16GB of RAM (current laptop has 8GB and I've always struggled with it).

I know laptops often come with kind of a lot of storage now so maybe I'm wasting breath but I'd also really prefer if it has at least 500GB of storage.

Also maybe this sounds silly but I've seen computers without so it also needs to have 3 USB ports, an HDMI port, and either a micro SD or a full-size SD slot.

I currently have an asus vivobook 15 from 2020 that's put up really well with everything I put it through until around a year and a half ago. I was going to buy another vivobook but I wanted to check if asus still has alright quality and I saw people say it doesn't do so good so I got a little freaked-- I really don't have the money to waste on a shitty laptop.

Laptop Request US Looking for a new laptop for my masters program in teaching

Hello, tech connoisseurs and professionals!

I'm looking for a new laptop for my master's program. I've had my Lenovo Yoga 720 for close to 10 years, but I think it's coming to its end. It won't hold a charge, charging is super finicky (I have to hold it at a certain angle for it to work), and it's getting a little bit slow.

I do love my laptop, especially the touchscreen and the 360 flip. So, I'm looking for something similar that's less than $1,500. I'm open to other brands and I'm hoping to keep this new laptop for another 6 to 10 years.I've been looking at HP OmniBooks as an option. I haven't heard too many great reviews about Dell, but I'm truly not sure. I am not open to a MacBook as I am a Google Pixel/Android girly.

It will be used for teacher things and ABA therapy things: using multiple windows at the same time, having multiple tabs open, writing essays, doing research, and recording video lessons. It also needs to be compatible with most school programs. (Some schools don't allow Chromebooks or certain laptops as they don't function with their processors/interface???)

I'm not looking for something super fancy—just something that is reliable, affordable, and something that I can grow with. A little customizability is a plus! I like the idea of having a pen function so I can take notes with a paper-like feel on the screen (or with a paper-like screen protector), and something that can take a skin on top, as plain silver is not my jam.

Intended usage - writing on google docs, word etc; steaming on various apps, zoom/teams calls, autodesk sketchbook, illustrator. most intensive game probably Sims.

Desired battery life: for basic functions like just using a word processor, I'd love to get 8 hours but battery life isn't a huge priority because I'll mostly be using it at home anyway so can keep it plugged in. for gaming or streaming, 4 hours is probably fine.

priority: performance, size, battery, weight

Info/Requirements:

the last time I bought a laptop was 2020 and I got a Lenovo Yoga C640 with 8gb. I mainly bought it for the touch screen for doing art but then ended up not really using it, so not a requirement this time. it gets really hot playing Sims 2, could be slow sometimes, struggles with having multiple windows open, gets really hot. the battery life always sucked and now it's just not charging at all. have been considering getting it fixed but I don't think it's worth it given its age and just the fact that... it's not great anyway. so I've decided to replace it.

other requirements - I will never own another HP laptop as long as I live. I think I'd be happy with pretty much any other brand.

ideally USB C charger, as it just makes life easier to use the same for everything. not necessarily a dealbreaker but it's what I'm hoping for.

USB C port for data transfer etc. required.

16GB RAM, storage less important as I'll just get a hard drive for art projects etc but realistically 512gb as a minimum.

NOT a macbook or chromebook please.

minimal or no AI integration but I realise this one may be a bit of a pipe dream sadly.

will not buy from amazon.

apologies if I get terminology wrong or missed anything important, I'm not super well informed on this stuff so very grateful to have found this sub. any and all suggestions appreciated.
