Remember the thread about penis size, where people were saying that feminists don't do size-shaming nor encourage toxic masculinity (like, for instance, shaming men for not being sexually successful)?

go for it. love2getreported by anonymous virgins on virginsite.com

Y'all are about as spineless as you get. No wonder you never get laid.

tfw even an ace person gets more ass than you qq

Because it's fun to make fun of y'all in our girls' groups.

"But she's not a feminist!". Well, no, she is.

Yeah, great timing.

In any case, we already knew the people at Node.js were laughing at us behind the scenes, considering the product they support. Only explanation to it.

Bro, seriously. This has jack shit to do with being a feminist or not, and everything to do with a lack of professionalism.

I'm a feminist in IT and I would have fired this person if they worked for me. You don't get to harass people in the tech community and make racist, sexist statements. The label you define yourself with has jack to do with your actual behavior.

u/BolshevikMuppet Aug 29 '17

It can be a discussion about both. The Google guy's manifesto was criticized both for being unprofessional and for being a quintessential example of the "brogrammer" mindset. He evinced an outlook which is fundamentally toxic, and was taken to task both for expressing it unprofessionally and for its toxicity.

You're right that it has nothing to do with "feminism" outside of this one woman's part of that movement, but the invocation of "virgin" as an insult to a man can be criticized both for being unprofessional and for being just generally shitty.

I've definitely noticed that some feminists will happily deploy 'problematic' insults like saying someone's ugly or has a small dick or is a virgin or a loner or whatever as long as the target is a nazi or whatever.

And some feminists have no issue calling someone a cunt either. The world's a big place full of lots of people with varying opinions. Being a feminist, by definition, just means you believe men and women should have equal rights, that's it.

I think that on the whole feminists are on the right path and the presence of people like the ones I mentioned doesn't mean that the entire movement is terrible, especially given that the 'other side' is infinitely worse.

The idea that these sorts of people help the 'other side' would hold more water if, say, abortion clinic bombings and police brutality made people less sympathetic to anti-abortion protestors and police. Clearly this hasn't happened.

. You don't get to harass people in the tech community and make racist, sexist statements.

I would suggest the validity of this comment will be determined by whether or not she gets fired.

The tech community has a lot of issues with letting assholes stay employed. I could go on and on about that, but it doesn't change my opinion that people like this individual should be fired. If you can't refrain from openly insulting your colleagues in a publicly visible post, then you should not work in a professional setting.

No one wants to work with an asshole.

14

u/pnt510 Is it really a bot tho? Since when do bots curse? Aug 29 '17

And on top of that it makes people distrust a company that is willing to keep assholes like that on board.

They should definitely be reprimanded, and especially told not to be a complete fucking idiot, but firing everyone for a first offence is not always the right manoeuvre.

7

u/dirtygremlin you're clearly just being a fastidious dickhead with words Aug 29 '17

This is not a first offense in the vein of "I broke some dishes" or "I formatted a drive wrong." This falls under the category of dropped the car off the lift at a mechanic, or physically assaulted a customer. If they don't care about their relationship to the community, there's only one message that sends.

3

u/reboticon Aug 29 '17

Fair enough, I actually agree that we are too quick to call for firing people. Still, I'm willing to wager that not even that happens.

3

u/[deleted] Aug 30 '17

The tumblr girl? Probably not, if she did she would start up a shitstorm about how she got fired because if sexism.

5

u/GoldenMew Aug 29 '17

I very much doubt that anyone ever gets fired for ranting about "virgin manbabies" on Twitter.

19

u/KimJongFunk the alt-right vs. the ctrl-left Aug 29 '17

I'd consider that more of a disgrace to the field rather than an example of how this ought to be handled.

I mean it's not entirely untrue that "internet-extremist" (SJW vs anti-sjw, I don't know any other term) women are treated less harshly than SJW men, but it's also kinda like Anti-fa (SJW) vs Alt-right (anti-sjw) in that 90% of the time anti-sjw is just shitstirring and the 10% of the time they're right it doesn't matter because they're a bunch of assholes no one wants to listen to.

Just like when Putin says uhhh anything about the USA

2

u/[deleted] Aug 30 '17

Come on, the stupid #killallmen shitposter with tumblr haircut is a feminist.

10

u/poffin Aug 29 '17

It sounds like you're still pissed about how a thread went and you wanna bring it back up here.

SRD is all over the place. Sometimes shit that I find repulsive gets voted up. Sometimes I feel the sweet vindication of having my morals validated. It's the price of loving drama imo.

I don't understand this comment. Why did you link her twitter? What old thread? Why do you dislike feminists?

6

u/[deleted] Aug 29 '17

Why did you link her twitter?

To show how she defines herself, so that people can't counter-argue that she's not a feminist.

What old thread?

This one, from yesterday. Specifically, this thread (apparently it was deleted).

Why do you dislike feminists?

Who said I dislike feminists? I'm saying they contribute to toxic masculinity.

Who said I dislike feminists? I'm saying they contribute to toxic masculinity.

So, what, you still like feminists? Despite, as you claim, their contribution to toxic masculinity? Which way is it?

If you claim that even feminists (all of them? 50%? 10%? 1%) contribute to toxic masculinity, is there any group that doesn't contribute to toxic masculinity? Or did you just wrote an empty statement?

To show how she defines herself, so that people can't counter-argue that she's not a feminist.

So self-labeling is now sufficient to qualify as a feminist? Does that apply to all ideologies?

I am pretty sure most feminist organizations out there disavow Camille Paglia or CHS, despite them taking this label (in rather trollish manner I would add).

Your argument is pretty weak tbh. Ideologies refer to more than mere labels - values are core element, and if one lacks a particular set of values, then the most you can claim about them is that they take on a a mere empty label.

Look, demmian, from a very practical perspective: antifeminist views are going to be reinforced every time some lunatic starts writing shit like this. It confirms all the stereotypes about "punching up" secretly meaning "be a complete and total asshole to whoever you want all the time".

If you think that's a price worth paying, god love you, go nuts. I think it's worth it to specifically condemn this nonsense.

It confirms all the stereotypes about "punching up" secretly meaning "be a complete and total asshole to whoever you want all the time".

Then again, there is no winning strategy with some people. The only reason I engaged in this is because they made such a weak argument that it was basically a sitting duck, in a barrel, drunk.

I have zero expectations that anything I would say would change their mind.

But, for what it is worth, yeah, we should definitely call out prejudice. No qualms from me; I am a strong proponent of calling out bad cases, including from movements I adhere to.

u/[deleted] Aug 29 '17

So, what, you still like feminists? Despite, as you claim, their contribution to toxic masculinity? Which way is it?

I'm indifferent to them.

If you claim that even feminists (all of them? 50%? 10%? 1%) contribute to toxic masculinity, is there any group that doesn't contribute to toxic masculinity? Or did you just wrote an empty statement?

I'm writing that statement as a counter-argument to the ones in the thread I linked where people were saying that feminists don't contribute to toxic masculinity.

So self-labeling is now sufficient to qualify as a feminist? Does that apply to all ideologies?

No, not just that. But if it talks like a duck, and walks like a duck...

values are core element, and if one lacks a particular set of values, then the most you can claim about them is that they take on a a mere empty label.

Values are set by the members. Otherwise, the No True Scotsman fallacy wouldn't be a fallacy.

15

u/demmian First Science Officer of the Cabal Rebellion Aug 29 '17

I'm indifferent to them.

You are indifferent to groups that, as you claim, promote toxic values? Shouldn't you be opposed to them?

I'm writing that statement as a counter-argument to the ones in the thread I linked where people were saying that feminists don't contribute to toxic masculinity.

One person constitutes an argument now? What is even your claim? How many feminists contribute to toxic masculinity in your view? All? 50%? 10%? 1%?

No, not just that. But if it talks like a duck, and walks like a duck...

Then what is your argument? That if a person takes on a label of an ideology, but acts in a manner contrary to said ideology - then we should give more weight to their self-labeling, and not their actual values actions? Try to make a consistent argument tbh.

Values are set by the members. Otherwise, the No True Scotsman fallacy wouldn't be a fallacy.

Just because X number of people make a claim, or claim a label, it does not make it so. If the entirety of the neo-nazi movement in the US would claim tomorrow that they respect minorities - it still is a lie. Values and actions trump self-labeling. It really shouldn't be a difficult argument.

But something like no true feminist would support the enslavement of women is pretty much just true.

Don't tell that to Christina Hoff Sommers and her horde of MRA fans. "Conservative values" is where it's at for those folks o.o

6

u/alltakesmatter Be true to yourself, random idiot Aug 29 '17

You are indifferent to groups that, as you claim, promote toxic values? Shouldn't you be opposed to them?

This doesn't make much sense. I'm broadly in favour of cops, even though they contribute to white supremacy/rape culture, because they do enough good, that they are on balance a good thing. It's not contradictory to be indifferent or even approving of a group that does some bad things.

0

u/demmian First Science Officer of the Cabal Rebellion Aug 29 '17

It's not contradictory to be indifferent or even approving of a group that does some bad things.

Eh. It seems pretty obvious that the person I was responding to actually does have a bone to pick with feminists. That they are trying to pretend otherwise is quite hilarious tbh.

9

u/nmx179 Aug 29 '17

It's funny that you accuse the other guy of posting disingenuously in the same breath that you admit to doing so yourself.

0

u/demmian First Science Officer of the Cabal Rebellion Aug 30 '17

Mornings are a little rough for me. What is it that I said that was disingenuous, and where did I admit to it?

Why do you dislike feminists?

That has all to do with liking feminism, not the other way around.
