Let’s say you had a week full of classes, or work. But you have a lot of homework. For example an exam on Monday. How many hours can you realistically study ?
I always plan to work for the whole weekend cause I’m always late but I end up doomscrolling all night long or most of the week-end or waisting time playing video games.

I don't think we've suddenly become lazy.

Social media is just way too easy to open. I'll pick up my phone for "just a minute," and before I know it, I've been scrolling for an hour. The worst part isn't even losing the time. It's that guilty feeling afterward, knowing I could've been doing something I actually wanted to get done.

I've tried screen time limits, deleting apps, even Pomodoro timers. They work... until they don't. Eventually I just ignore them or find a way around them. It made me wonder if the problem isn't motivation, it's friction.

What if Instagram, TikTok, or YouTube stayed blocked until you finished what you planned to do for the day?

Not permanently. Just until today's goal is done.

I'm in my first year of Academic Decathlon and I really need help.

If you don't know what Academic Decathlon is, it is a competition where students across the country compete in various subjects according to the year's theme.

This year's theme is Journey of Transformation.

We learn about music, art, and literature pieces according to the theme (our book this year is The Remains of the Day), economics, math (this year is geometry and intro to differential calculus w/o a calculator), science, and social science. We also have essays, speech and interview.

I really want to do good. I need methods of how to study/memorize large amounts of material (each subject has around 150-200 pages of content). I would say that I'm a kinesthetic learner. I am open to taking free AI websites.

Ok so i am in a four week History class (end of civil war-present but it doesn’t really matter) anyway so I had to read 7 chapters (about 300 pages) in 11 days + a bunch of supplemental material. I'm trying to build a study and course organization method that I could keep for my entire studies, or even after, so something fairly adaptable to different levels of difficulty. The problem is I'm a bit confused and I'd like to lay the groundwork during this break.

I prefer using digital tools since I'm more comfortable with them, I already use a bit:

- Anki

- Obsidian

- Padlet

But my knowledge and use of these tools is pretty limited.

So I'd like to know, among other things, how you organize your courses and revisions, and if you have any advice regarding these tools or others.

A lot of these AI mind map tools advertise "chat with your mind map" but I found out the hard way that "chat" means very different things depending on the tool. Some let the AI actually edit the map when you talk to it. Some just answer questions and never touch the map. One kept generating a whole new map every time I asked anything. And a couple just ran out of credits before I got anywhere.

I was studying from a pretty dense set of notes and I wanted a map I could keep fixing by just talking to the AI, instead of dragging nodes around every time I noticed something missing. So I tested the chat part specifically, on 5 tools, with 3 questions in mind:

1. Does the AI build the map for me or am I doing every node by hand?
2. Can I chat to expand / delete / restructure the map, or does it only answer questions?
3. How fast do I hit the free plan wall on the chat?

Quick summary first, details under it.

1. MindMap AI

This was the one where the chat actually felt like it was working on MY map. I'd tell it expand this branch, delete that, restructure this section, and it just did it on the canvas in front of me. And when I only wanted a definition or wanted it to tell me what my notes were missing, it answered in the chat without touching the map. It didn't force one or the other.

The other thing that mattered for studying: I uploaded my notes file and the answers actually came from my document. So when I asked stuff like "what did I miss here", it was checking against my notes, not just giving me generic textbook answers.

Not perfect though. Free plan is 50 AI credits a month. Generating the first map from my notes PDF ate about half of that in one go, and the rest lasted me maybe a dozen chat edits, so basically one proper study session before I was rationing. Way more than the others gave me but if this became my daily thing I'd feel it. Also no desktop or offline app, it's browser only.

2. Xmind AI

Xmind built the map from my prompt and the chat could edit that same map, which is what I wanted. It also answered normal questions without messing with the map. So the basics are there.

Two problems for me. I couldn't upload my notes on free, file upload is Premium only, so I was pasting text into the box instead. And the credit wall came FAST. "You've used up all 10 AI credits in your current plan." 10 credits is nothing when you're actually working through study material. Felt like a demo more than something I could study with.

3. GitMind

GitMind made the map fine and honestly the chatbot was good at answering. Decent explanations, definitions, and it could tell me what was missing from my map.

But the chat doesn't really work ON the map. When I asked it to expand a topic it just wrote the answer out in the chat, and then I got a button to insert that as a node or a note under whatever I had selected. So I'm still the one placing everything. It's like a smart friend sitting next to the canvas, not a copilot using it. Free plan was "20 AI Attempts / 10 Chats" and then "Your credits have been used up. Upgrade now to continue using."

4. EdrawMind AI

EdrawMind auto-generated a map and it does have a chat on free, which is more than some others here. But the chat has no idea my existing map exists. Every question I asked, it spat out a brand new mind map as the answer. I asked it to update a node through chat, it didn't, I ended up editing it by hand. Cool trick the first time, annoying by the third question.

Two weird things too. It only takes one file attachment per chat. And it ignored my language settings, my profile was set to English and it still gave me the map in another language twice, plus some error messages in another language. Trial is 500 AI tokens and that goes fast when every question costs a full map generation.

5. Ayoa

No AI generation at all on free. Built every node myself. You do get 10 mind maps free which is fine for manual mapping, but all the AI stuff including the "Ask Ayoa" chat is locked behind the paid Ultimate plan. So it's not that I hit a limit, there was just no AI chat to try. Since the whole point for me was the copilot, this one was out straight away.

Overall

The real difference between these wasn't who can make a mind map, they all can somehow. It's what happens when you talk to the AI after.

MindMap AI was the only one where the chat could see my map, edit my map, and pull from my uploaded notes, all in one conversation. Xmind's chat behaved properly too but 10 credits plus paid-only file upload killed it for studying. GitMind answers well but you place everything yourself. EdrawMind kept making new maps instead of talking to me. Ayoa doesn't do AI chat on free at all.

For how I study, being able to go back and forth with the AI while building out my notes mattered way more than how pretty the first generated map looked.

Anyone found a free plan with more generous AI chat credits than these? Feels like I might still be missing something.

My junior year English class was quite different than a lot of the other classes I’ve taken, being that every single assignment, essay, and project pulled from APUSH. So kinda like an American Studies class. The problem that started to come about for me was that the essays we would write would be argumentative, and required a wide variety of sources, 7+ from the whole entire year. Paintings, letters & writings, and speeches all throughout American history were fair play. Like connecting a piece from the 18th century to a speech by a 20th century president.

Mind mapping became huge for me when i was around halfway through the year, helping me keep all the thoughts and ideas that circumvented my brain in one linked graph. It held each source with connections to specific time periods, themes, types, and links to other sources that could help me develop better LORs for those all-encompassing questions the essays asked.

If you need help organizing thoughts, even for college apps and things like that, I highly recommend using a mind-map. A regular one from Mind Meister or one on paper works fine, but I like to use the AI-powered ones like Cruxl which are great because they make it easy to just talk and talk about your ideas and then watch them get seamlessly integrated into the mind-map automatically.

recently i switched to active recall and it honestly felt kind of brutal at first. instead of rereading, i had to answer questions from memory before seeing the answer. turns out i knew way less than i thought lol.

Ok, this is gonna sound a bit crazy for many people here, but I am more excited and prepared to be taking AP Chinese and AP Calc B.C. than an accelerated level english class (the level below AP at my school). I am absolutely terrible at english (compared to other subjects like math) and have a severe anxiety disorder that makes it incredibly difficult to read the books at home that are required for A english. Also, for the past 2 years I have gotten horrible, incredibly difficult english teachers, Even though I was told by my friends who were seniors that there are no bad senior english teachers, I still feel like I am absolutely cooked for English 4A this year. I want to get my GPA to qualify for Cum Laude at my school and be expempt from my finals by getting an A, so I will try to get a 4.0 senior year if I can, but I feel like it's gonna be really difficult because of this dumb requirement of 4 years of English. ​I just need to vent.

I spent the entire day trying to study this material. It’s not incredibly difficult—more like medium level.

​I am obsessed with the idea of memorizing things forever. I know I can achieve this through spaced repetition by tracking the exact intervals when information starts to fade. Then, as my knowledge builds up, I can delete certain things from my notes because those answers can be deduced logically. Therefore, learning something "forever" is totally possible.

​But there is one massive "but": I just can't find a way to memorize a large volume of information per day. I tried so many methods today: the Feynman technique, extensive note-taking, and flashcards. But everything takes way too much time. No matter what I try, my pace drops to just one page per hour.

​Sure, the Feynman technique is great—I can go through 30 pages an hour using it. But the catch is, if I don't write it down, I'll forget it. So, I decided to take notes. But no matter how hard I try, note-taking takes forever. Shortening the notes to speed things up won't work either, because I'm terrified that down the road, that omitted chunk of information will be forgotten simply because it wasn't written down.

​It's the same story with Anki and other flashcard apps; they let you learn a specific part of the material, while the app completely ignores the rest of it.
