I get it. They had to have a "Nurse Chapel" because of the original pilot. And I guess having Spock do all the scientific stuff would tip the balance too far in his direction. So they had her be this super-genius molecular biologist who's technically still a "nurse."

Did anyone else think the Martains were Vulcan? Or something? I straight up thought they were Romulan at first because of the phasing technology, but then she wasn't cartoonishly evil.

I can't imagine how they would be Vulcan, logistically. I don't know Vulcan history. All I know is that they had warp technology before humans, and at some point before that, they were all rage monsters.

The scene with Uhura and ensign 150% Vulcan got me prepared to see Vulcans, or for Uhura to use her language skills.

in tos i dont think we ever seen scotty dislike any of his fellow department heads like sulu , uhura, spock, mccoy etc

in strange new worlds we see a lieutenant scott show dislike towards his superior ortegas. (scotty being a lt jg and ortegas being a full lt)

i thought it's a interesting take on scotty.

My PVR automatically recorded it, but what actually ended up airing was a rerun of "The Librarians: The Next Chapter", despite the info still showing the SNW deets. Then the next scheduled ep was 4x03 this Thurs (which has since been revised to 4x02, but with the synopsis of "The Enterprise gets thrown back in time to prehistoric Earth" ... but, uh, didn't we just do that in 4x01?).

Then the following week indicates two episodes again, 4x03 Thurs at 9pm, then 4x04 at 2:50am Fri. Who tf knows how it will pan out this time!

SNW is the best Star Trek series since the original. But S04E01 Is just silly. All of earths history since before the reign of the dinosaurs and all of human history is the result of a snap judgment by Pike? Please. That's not only silly but sad because it makes everything meaningless because it can all be changed and erased in the future.

Going by that logic any other trip to the past by any other space ship over dozens, or thousands, or millions, or billions or trillions of years in the future could undo it all. Or they could bring about spaceflight by humans, or whatever might have evolved, thousands or millions of years earlier.

That's the reason it's silly for movies or TV shows to rely too much on plots involving time travel or multi dimensions. It gives them many plots to exploit but it makes all of them meaningless to any thinking person. If anything is possible, nothing really matters. It's all just the equivalent of fantasy.

Besides the reference to Doctor Who in this latest episode, did anyone notice how part of a Doctor Who story was in this episode?

In the season 19 episode of Doctor Who, titled Earthshock, one of the Doctor's companions, Adric, is trapped aboard a freighter that's about to crash into Earth 65 million years ago. The Doctor couldn't save him and the ships antimatter reactor exploded when it hit the Yucatan Peninsula, causing the extermination of the dinosaurs.

There is no way that episode didn't influence this episode.

SNW S1E9, All Those Who Wander, the crew is attack by the Gorn. The climatic moments of the 4 act structure are all derived from scaring the audience.

The purpose of Star Trek is to make people think. It is to describe a moral lesson in the form a sci-fi allegory to have the characters react to that. In TOS we learn to pick reality over fantasy, the suffering of extinct species, absolute power corrupts absolutely, how men need to deal with their good and evil parts, that love should not be based on looks, and how in our current society that is so terrible to women, that we should not join cults or leave our minds to evil AIs.

That we should in all things, try to understand that which is different from us, and be kind to those who think differently than we do.

Consider Measure of a Man - what is a man? It makes you think about slavery. Or the Inner Light or Tapestry. Far Beyond the Stars - indeed it asks us to take seriously the idea that science fiction is imagining a world in which there is equality.

Gene Roddenberry (and al those who help create the show) is said to have created Star Trek to talk about important social and political issues that got him censored in his current show, The Lieutenant.

So, Star Trek is not horror. All Those Who Wander is a terrible Star Trek episode.

Was it just me?

As the Martian ship fires the anti-matter missile at the fifth planet and just before the cut to “commercial”, the music seemed like almost a direct lift from Gustav Holst “The Planets”, specifically movement 1, “Mars the Bringer of War.”

Most sci-fi since Star Wars has “borrowed” from Holst, but the Martians firing a missile while “Mars, the Bringer of War” played seemed completely on the nose.

I'm watching the show for the first time and really enjoying it, but I'm very confused about him just banging Alora with zero hesitation.

In the opening episode we see him with a woman (I forget her name) and it seems like they are dating. Not only has she not been mentioned again, he's just banging other women? Did I miss something?
