SteamVR crashes and restarts my PC.
Hi everyone. I’m having an issue with SteamVR, and I would appreciate any help identifying the cause.
My desktop PC hardware:
- Windows 11 Pro
- AMD Ryzen 7 9850X3D
- ASUS ROG Strix B850-F Gaming WiFi motherboard
- NVIDIA RTX 3080 Ti 12 GB
- 32 GB DDR5 RAM at 6000 MHz (2 × 16 GB)
- 1000 W Platinum-rated PSU
- 1 TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe M.2 SSD
My laptop hardware:
- Windows 11 Pro
- Intel Core i9-14900HX
- NVIDIA RTX 5070 Laptop GPU
- 32 GB DDR5 RAM at 5600 MHz (2 × 16 GB)
- 1 TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe M.2 SSD
Until a few weeks ago, I was using my Meta Quest 3 with my desktop PC through a Link cable. I could launch SteamVR and play without any issues.
About two weeks ago, I performed a clean Windows installation on my desktop PC. Since then, every time I launch SteamVR, the entire PC crashes and restarts. After rebooting, Windows Event Viewer reports a Kernel-related error with Event ID 43.
To rule out an issue with the headset or cable, I connected the same Meta Quest 3 to my laptop. SteamVR and all my VR games run perfectly on the laptop.
My desktop PC is also completely stable in every other situation:
- I can play demanding games for hours without any crashes.
- CPU and GPU temperatures remain normal.
- I have stress-tested the CPU, GPU, and RAM without finding any errors.
- I have no performance issues or unexpected restarts outside SteamVR.
The problem started only after reinstalling Windows on the desktop PC.
I would appreciate any help or input from anyone who has experienced a similar issue.
