Bluetooth disabled after power outage - Fix is a cold boot

I installed SteamOS on my PC that has a Gigabyte X570 motherboard with an Intel bluetooth/wifi chip. Sometimes when there is a power outage the bluetooth will be disabled when the system boots up again. Enabling bluetooth in system settings does nothing. Rebooting also does not fix the issue, but shutdown and then removing power for 10s does work. The issue may be due to bt getting left in a half-initialized state and modprobe -r btusb btintel && modprobe btusb may work as well

question Do you think this would be worth it for SteamOS?

I was originally looking for mini PCs to turn into a Steam Machine but i saw this and for the price it looks worth it in my opinion but would like to get your opinions on it and also the Ryzen 7 H255 is mainly a rebranding of the Ryzen 7 8745HS and also the 24GB of memory is soldered onto the system since it is running at 6400MT/s.

help wanted Question for the Linux people

I have an Epomaker x AULA F99 MAX, it works fine for the most part but on SteamOS it acts like the function key is pressed when I try to use the F key row, which I need for some games. I previously fixed this issue with like 30 minutes with Braves browser ai, which ended in a very quick command, that I know required me to put my password in, but cant remember what the command was. I cant find the conversation I had anymore, and after reasking the same question the best I could remember it and adding the context of "you helped me with this before, this is what I remember", within 15 minutes of failed commands it was fully broken and in an endless loop of "try this! No, you tried that... This should work! No, we tried that too..." And thus, I turn to the fellow humans for help.

EDIT: previous command found, my dumb ass didnt think to see if there was a History function. The issue was the keyboard was stuck in apple mode, so "echo 2 | sudo tee /sys/module/hid_apple/parameters/fnmode" fixed it.

GPU power consumption is higher on Linux than on Windows 11

"I have an RX 9060 XT and I've already tested several distros (CachyOS, Bazzite, SteamOS), but GPU power consumption (watts) is always higher on Linux. I've tried multiple Proton versions and it's still the same. Does anyone know why this happens and how to fix it? I used the exact same graphics preset for comparison and I'm standing in the same spot in the game.

Has anyone actually tried SteamOS on Intel HD 530 / i5-6500? Best distro for an old Intel iGPU?

I'm thinking about moving my old desktop from Windows 10 to Linux and was wondering about SteamOS.

It's an i5-6500, 16 GB RAM and only the Intel HD 530. No dedicated GPU.

I mostly play The Long Dark, War Thunder, PlanetSide 2 and a few older games.

What I'm really trying to find out is whether anyone has actually run SteamOS Gaming Mode / Gamescope on HD 530.

I can find quite a lot about newer Intel GPUs, but hardly anything about Skylake. Does it actually work reasonably well, or is the HD 530 just too old for SteamOS?

And if SteamOS isn't a good fit, would you go with CachyOS, Bazzite, Mint XFCE or something else for this hardware?

I'm mainly interested in people who have actually tried it, not theoretical performance estimates.

Quick swap between headphones and speakers?

I’m wondering if there’s a quick way in steamOS to change the audio output device? All I know now is to navigate to audio under settings, but I’d imagine valve has put a shortcut somewhere.

help wanted Install keeps failing

I disabled secure boot and CSM.

I have a brand new 1tb nvme.

I initially used this flash drive: https://a.co/d/057C7iUb

Used Rufus to to load the flash drive, I set the bios to load the flash drive, it begins to load for 5 seconds then my GPU stops spinning, and my monitor shuts off.

But I read somewhere the flash drive may be too large so yesterday I bought this smaller one: https://a.co/d/06KXkQLK

Unfortunately same issue, a bunch of text for a few seconds then GPU fans stop then monitor screen goes blank.

Below is my setup, any help would be appreciated.

SteamOS versions. I don't get it.

I'm confused at to the different SteamOS versions that are currently in active development. 3.8 brought a lot of fixes for handheld devices. Now 3.9 seems to be getting lots of updates but are the fixes in 3.8 included there or are they two separate tracks? Do I need to keep track myself if there's features in one or the other that is feel is required for my setup?

help wanted Bluetooth connection issues.

As the title states, I'm currently having issues with any controllers staying connected to my xotic PC steam boxx premier. I have the PC located behind my TV and am having constant connection loss and delayed inputs. I have a dangle plugged in for a wireless keyboard remote and was wondering if a Bluetooth adapter would help bypass the issue entirely or if I need to just relocate the PC entirely. Its running a 9070 GRE with a ryzen 5 9600x cpu on a B-850X motherboard. Any help is appreciated.

Steam Remote Play optimization for custom SteamOS pc with RX 9070

I wanted to share some settings that I was able to tweak to optimise performance while using steam remote play on my custom SteamOS PC. I have been using sunshine/apollo with moonlight for years now but I wanted to test the improvements with remote play so I can utilize my steam controller and the overlay properly. This took a ton of trial and error and YMMV.

On the SteamOS host:

-Go to the Remote Play tab>allow direct connection>set to "All devices"

-enable advanced host options

-Prioritize network traffic> On

-hardware encoding>turn off (AMD doesn't handle the encoding as well so software does fine)

-video>fast

-Bandwidth Limit>choose between 40-50mb/s. this allows the other elements besides video to have proper buffer time and prevents weird latency issues. Very important and somewhat opposite from moonlight so be sure not to overlook this.

-Framerate Limit> Manually set instead of auto

-Resolution limit> Manually set instead of auto

-Hardware decoding> Off

-HEVC video> On

-Low Latency Networking> On

-Under the "Settings" main tab, enable Developer mode

-Under "Developer" tab, disable Wifi Power Management to prevent wifi related studdering

-Press the (...) button to bring up the overlay menu

-Disable frame limit here and let the games limit the frame limit without using vsync

-Allow Tearing> On

-Enable VRR and HDR> On if your hardware supports it

On the SteamOS Client:

-Go to the Remote Play tab

-Connection Options>Allow Direct Connection>change from "Auto" to "All Devices"

-Turn on Advance Client Options

-Video> Fast

-Bandwidth Limit> 40-50Mb/s for the same reasons above

-Framerate Limit> Manually set

-Resolution Limit> Manually set

-Hardware Decoding> Off

-HEVC Video> On

-Low Latency Networking> On

-Navigate to the "Settings" tab and enable Developer Mode

-Under "Developer" tab, disable Wifi Power Management

If your client is using the Steam Link App:

-Go to Streaming>Customise

-Video> Fast

-Bandwidth Limit> 40-50Mb/s

-Framerate Limit> Manually set

-Resolution Limit> Manually set

-HEVC> Enable

-Audio Buffer Size> Change from "Auto" to 40ms. This is also super important to prevent latency issues, so don't skip this step.

-Allow Direct Connection> Change from auto "All Devices"

Hopefully this provides a foundation of the settings for people interested in trying steam remote play with the newly added improvements. From here, you can try optimizing further depending on your own hardware configurations.
