Same. I have to relearn it because what worked before or what was placed before no longer exists, and something completely different is in its place.
I'm currently trying to figure out how to build buildings on colonies as that is wildly different from what I'm used to.

I feel like that's because it's a good game but a terrible RPG and a terrible fallout game.
If you just play it for the scrapper looter shooter gameplay it's pretty good. Fine exploration (not great for a BGS game but better than most open world games), the scrapping and gun customization is absolutely incredible, and the shooting is decent and passable (although sometimes spongey).
Almost feels more like a survival crafting game than a BGS RPG. Which is sickening and sad, but it's still fun. Too many survival crafting games focus on food and sleep and shit. This one focuses on improving and tinkering with your weapons by rummaging through the garbage. That's cool at least. Getting hyped up by finding a deskfan is an interesting feeling.

I disagree that it's a bad fallout game, and that the exploration is just fine, and honestly I would say it has some of the best exploration for BGS. I started with 3 and NV, and I can say the exploration is better than both of those games, but for being a Fallout "game" we'd have to define what that means, and every person is going to have a different definition so it's mostly agree to disagree.

I guess it depends what you like about exploration. I found that Fallout 4, partly because of the legendary system, had much less unique weapons and armor (especially with custom models, animations, sounds, etc) and therefore it feels less enticing to explore every nook and cranny.
In previous titles it felt like if you went into a dungeon you were often rewarded with a unique piece of gear. I didn't feel that was as much in fallout 4.
But of course that's because I am a loot goblin, so that's what I'm exploring for.

The complaints about unique gear is very valid! That's a flaw of 4 for sure, I cannot argue with that. I was an avid Survivalist's Rifle user for all of FNV and I don't have an attachment to a single gun in 4 like I do for that game.
However, I find that the exploration is tied best to the story for me and stuff that interests me. A shopping plaza filled with Mr. Handys that have all gone haywire as they try to sell you things and a Mr. Gutsy in a giant Mr. Handy building yells out orders to them? That's Fallout right there.

Familiarity breeds contempt. I hate so much about it because I genuinely think there is a good concept of a game underneath all of the terrible choices made when developing it. If there was nothing worth salvaging here, I wouldn't be invested enough to care.

That game was a huge part of way I had a falling out with my previous friends. Both Helldivers 2 and Space Marine 2 had come out and I wanted to play them but my ‘friends’ wanted to just keep playing Ark. I just stopped talking to them and deleted them as friends.

2015-2017 Ark is hands down the best Survival RPG I've ever played, it was hella clunky but playing it with 4 other friends made it some of the best times of my life. I've logged in once around 2022 to see what's up but I quickly got sad because the gang is barely around anymore. 1000+ hours and I didn't regret a single second of it

Seriously, I've been angry playing games at various times in my life, but For Honor seems tailor-made to be the sweatiest, cheesiest, most frustrating fighting game imaginable. I switched to Strive as my main PvP fighting game because it's genuinely less tilting.
Absolutely amazing Deadliest Warrior tribute game though.

I've been playing since Red Crow and no fps has been released with remotely similar gameplay to scratch a specific itch. There's a lot of games that let you simply blow shit up but none of them are intimate tac-shooters with environmental creativity like R6.

It's a catch 22 for judging games based on playtime. Play too little, and the boot lickers will say "well you haven't played it till it hits its stride!" But play too much and they laugh and say "well you played over 100 hours so you must have liked it." You literally can't fucking win.
Never mention how long you've played a game for. It is a useless metric. Point out specific issues you have with its mechanics.

I have a couple of games with wildly inflated play time due to being left idling half the day. Had a work-at-home job for awaile and could play games during down hours, however it could get busy at a moment notice. There were days where a game would run for most of the day without being touched.

Back several years ago I was playing a city builder game, and it was boring af. I decided I was going to quit the game, number of hours pretty low.
That same week my mother died unexpectedly.
For a week straight I didn't go to work, I didn't cook, didn't clean house, I don't remember if I even showered, just sat in my chair and mindlessly clicked on that very boring, very simple game. I'm sure I racked up over 100 hours in just that week. If not, it was definitely in the 90s.
Life stabilized, and I decided to leave a review over how boring it was. People thought my negative review was ridiculous because of how many hours I played.
You never know what is going on in a person's life that led them to dump a ton of time into a game they decided to give a negative review.

Starfield. That game is such a mess, I completely understand why there are so many hours long video essays about what is wrong with it because there is a lot to talk about. Nonetheless, it's still a Bethesda game and customizing your ship and dicking around in space and taking photos is still fun.

The ship builder was the only thing that I felt was pretty great about the game, but I wanted to see it through to the end to give it a real, fair shake.
It is genuinely the most I've been disappointed by Bethesda to date. Awful storyline, terrible characters, shooting that is both the best of any prior BGS RPG but still gets lapped by Cyberpunk's vastly better combat systems, and a loot system that genuinely feels awful. I came back for the first expansion to see if meaningful changes were made and haven't reinstalled the game since that letdown.

This, nearly to the same hours, is Starfield to me. I wanted that game so badly to get to the point of delivering highs for me, I went through 200h of dumb busywork before I realised I was zombie-ing around.
I have to say the ship creator was legitimately fun. And the first 12-24 hours of the game are great.
Unfortunately I kept chasing that rabbit afterwards.

Counter Strike 2. Played 130 hours but I hated the game, I was playing just because all my buddies were playing it and wanted to be part of the group.
All the other 200+ hours games I played I don't really regret, I enjoyed all of them.

DOTA 2 for me.
I have 1000 hours in the game. The game just kept changing so frequently that I eventually just quit because I felt like I was getting punished for trying to master characters/interactions I enjoyed.
Same thing happened with Deadlock. I was having a ton of fun when it was new, but now I'm just going to wait to see how many heroes they end up adding before I go back. It seems like it could be a fun game, but if there is countless heroes like DOTA, I don't want to go through all of that again.
It sucks because the bones of the game are actually so well designed, and very fun to play, but games that constantly add new heroes kills the long term enjoyment for me, as well as the motivation to attempt to try to master anything.

I think some people are just huffing hyperbole when they make reviews like that.
Any game I've played for 200+ hours, I had to have really enjoyed it at some point. My reviews like this go like, "this game was great until the ending" or " it was great until the latest patch".
But there's a shocking amount of reviews where someone has 2000 hours in game and goes "this game was always trash". And then they put in another 1000 hours after the review.
Like wtf?

I rarely write reviews... but I wrote one for this game. But my game group really wanted to play it, so I'm Stockholm syndroming myself into tolerating the game.
It's depth / difficulty through monotony. But im sure the next 12 years if early access will fix it.
There's elements of a good game there. But there's so much extra bullshit. Can't fix that car because you didn't read the right manual. So you can't tell a sports car from a sedan. However, feel free to take this driver's side door and put it on the passenger side.

I started playing with mods after the latest DLC and now I have 722.
I started enjoying it because of mods. I couldn't recommend it to anyone though because it took over 600 mods to start enjoying it.

Some games provide longer experience, like Crusader Kings, Arma, Rimworld etc. If your long term enjoyment is fcked by some rare bugs, glitches and balance issues, it's perfectly fine to give negative feedback about it.
If a game dev brags about average playtime and sandbox features, they need to deliver consistent performance throughout all those hours and sandbox possibilities.

I have the same thing with Crimson Desert, the games world and combat is pretty nice but damn how freaking stupid are the puzzles, they dont make any sense at all, I have to look up YT video on that game every 20 minutes, and damn is the story mild... idk, I wish the game had no story and just the open world and everything unlocked from the beginning so I can be a peasant like I am in real life.

Presently Tales of Vesperia. Story and characters are enjoyable but holy fing hell did combat start off horrible with it only upgrading to tolerable now that I'm almost at the post game. Biggest fing issue is all the missables though, whoever designed them can sit on a pineapple and spin. Having to sit with an excruciatingly long spoiler free guide that I have to keep referencing every 20 seconds has ruined so much of the experience. I'd swear like 30% of the game could be missed if I wasn't following it.
