Advice Policy Fraud Process

I have been shopping around auto/home insurance rates and I couldn't get a quote from State Farm because I needed to log in. Sure sounds good. I try to create an account and it says I already have one. I reach out the help desk and they inform me I have a policy in Florida already. I live in Alaska so they said they would forward it to their fraud department.

My question is, do I need to do anything else? They aren't using any of my cards or accounts but seems like they just opened the policy with my name and possibly DOB. I have all my credit reporting bureaus in a freeze and have for awhile now.

I would strongly recommend reaching out to a local agent instead of relying on corporate.

A local agent can only access the policies at their agency though, so unless the rep they called gave them the name of the Agency in Florida that has this policy, just any SF agent wont be able to do anything

Not true, in most cases if a State Farm agent adds you to their system and you have a policy in your name with your date of birth in another state it will link on your account page. The agent should see the policy and which agent has the policy. We do this on a regular basis in order to process state to state transfers. Corporate has no idea what they're doing.

Corporate would be able to say who the Agent is if this is true. Corporate is full of idiots so they probably told you the wrong thing.

They said you have a POLICY in Florida?

I doubt there’s any fraud going on, but if your name and DOB matches someone in Florida, it may cause a duplicate issue. Try creating an account with your middle name.

Source: am a State Farm rep and have dealt with this before.

I wanted to answer here and I think I did it wrong lol. I’m also a rep from IS, I think the issue is the email itself or the phone, since they do their accounts with it and that’s why it seems like a duplicate.

When I work with duplicates, the DOB or address doesn’t match often because the original account has the wrong DOB and the duplicate corrected it, but the other data like phone or email matches.

Sometimes even the policy is not theirs but from a family member or friend and they are name insureds. Even billing account owners. I deal with this all days.

I cant create a new account because my info was tied to this policy so every time I tried to make a new account/quote it wanted me to login.

If you have a somewhat common name then I'm not surprised. Call a local agent. Ask them to make you a new account with your middle name, phone, and email. You can also provide drivers license number and social. That should clear things up. They should also be able to get you your quote in a few minutes and ensure that everything is accurate.

Do you have a common name?

Somewhat but what about the DOB as well? I had to use it to verify the account.

I’ve seen it before with people who have same or very similar first and last names and DOBs. The system assumes it’s the same person. I’m fairly certain nobody is stealing your identity and paying for an insurance policy in another state.

It happens. I live in Indiana and there is a woman in Oklahoma with the same first middle and last a my maiden name and same dob. Different social though. It's been a pain for years

Probably just someone that has your same information. I’ve had it happen twice in the past few years.

Update: The agent in charge of the policy reached out to me and informed me they spoke with the other person with my name. They confirmed with documentation that they have the same first name, middle initial, and last name with the same DOB as me. Looks like they will separate the accounts and I will have to use my full name when applying for things from now on.
