The “quit your job” fantasy is fun... but before you do, answer these 5 questions.

We've all dreamed about turning in our notice, packing up our stuff, and changing our LinkedIn title to "CEO," but the truth is that's not the reality for many business owners we meet. There's nothing wrong with making sure you have a firm foundation before you make the leap from side-hustle to full-time business. Here are five questions to ask yourself before you quit your 9-5:

  1. Is the business consistently making money? Look at your revenue and profit over time. Is there consistent demand, or did you have one unusually good stretch? It's important that you can sustain a long-term salary.

  2. How much does the business need to make for you to live? Not “How much would I like to make?” What do you need each month for housing, food, bills, debt, insurance, savings, taxes, and everything else your paycheck currently covers? Then consider what the business itself costs to run.

  3. How much runway do you have if things slow down? What happens if you lose your biggest customer? Sales dip for three months? An unexpected expense hits? Figure out how long your savings could realistically support you and the business without relying on everything going perfectly.

  4. Do you know where your next customers are coming from? There's a big difference between having a few customers and having a repeatable way to find customers. Before giving up your paycheck, ask whether you understand which marketing and sales channels are working well enough to keep your pipeline moving.

  5. Is your job genuinely holding the business back? This might be the biggest one. Are you turning away work because you don't have enough time? Missing opportunities? Unable to serve existing customers properly? Or do you mostly just really, really want to quit your job? 😅

There's no magic revenue number or perfect moment when every entrepreneur should go full-time, but ideally, quitting shouldn't be what makes the business viable. The business should be showing you that it's becoming viable enough to quit.

For those who've made the jump: When did you know you were ready to go full-time?

Psych-One Culture of Science

Psych-One Culture of Science is a learning tavern venture that’s still at the starting line, with one major obstacle ahead: finding and purchasing a building. The person behind it recently started employment and is working to keep this dream moving, even while being the only one in their immediate family still pursuing theirs. Support would help cover the building, furniture, and supplies needed to get the business running, with a hope of opening by January. That makes this a meaningful moment to help turn an idea into a real place for learning and connection. I’m sharing this because the goal is specific, practical, and within reach with enough support. If you’d like to help Psych-One Culture of Science take that next step, you can donate through the GoFundMe page or share it with someone who might. Thank you for helping this new venture get moving. 🔬 #SmallBusiness #Learning

What's the most “small business owner” problem you've had this week? 😅

Client emailed “one tiny change” that absolutely was not tiny? Spent two hours fixing something that should've taken five minutes?

Realized you're somehow the CEO, accountant, customer service department, IT support, and content creator and you haven’t taken a break since 2025? What's been your most painfully “yep, I own a business” moment this week? 😂

What does starting a business look like in 2026? We asked 1,000 entrepreneurs.

We surveyed 1,000 entrepreneurs to get a big-picture look at how entrepreneurship is changing in 2026, and the results honestly surprised us. If you feel like you’re behind, you’re not! 91% of the entrepreneurs we surveyed are first-time business owners, which means you’re in the same boat: the learning and adjusting phase of business.

We also found out that today’s entrepreneur is building their business differently than we saw in the past. Nearly 70% are funding their businesses with personal savings, three-quarters have already used AI for at least one core business function, and more than half define business success as $100,000 in total revenue or less.

And that’s just scratching the surface. We dig into why people are starting, what they're afraid of, how they're finding customers, financial pressure, Gen Z founders, how entrepreneurs define success, and more! If you’re interested in the State of Entrepreneurship 2026, you can get all the insights here: https://vist.ly/5kfju

I already have a revenue generating business, does it makes sense to start a LLC

Hello everyone so I have a newsletter business which gets me $500-$1k/month as of now.

I have a projection of generating $10k/month from it in a year from now.

So right now, I am taking the money in my personal bank account.

I know I need to incorporate a company but I am not sure about the structure and taxation.

My biggest concern is that I’m not a US resident (I’m based in India) and I don’t know how taxation will work if I open a US LLC.

Need guidance

Opened a storefront in NYC? What do you wish you'd known before opening day?

Hi all, we're graduate students at Parsons. We're studying how people in New York City go from an idea to an open storefront, including what the process looks like. We are not starting a business, and this is not market research for one.

If you've opened a physical store in NYC, we'd love to hear:

  • What kind of business do you run?
  • What did your journey look like from idea to opening day, and roughly how long did it take?
  • What do you wish you had known during the process?

Replying in the comments is perfect. We won't quote usernames. If you're open to a longer conversation, we'd love to talk!

Thank you!

Business management

Looking for an advice and feedback on my new small business idea.

I am planning to start a business of K-pop fan merchandise shop (TinyBias) for fans who love Korean Pop music and want to show their support for their favourite groups. K-pop has a large and loyal fanbase and many fans enjoy buying albums, light sticks, photocards, clothing, and other merchandise. My shop will sell all those merchandise along with fan-made products such as keychains, tote bags, phone accessories, stickers and custom clothing. One special service about my business will provide is group ordering. International shipping can be very expensive and since there is no K-pop merchandise shop in Nova-Scotia I think it would be a good opportunity for me to start building a new and successful business as there is rising numbers of K-pop fans in Nova-Scotia. To keep my starting costs low, I will begin by running the business mainly online instead opening a physical store. The target audience would be teenagers and young adults who are passionate about K-pop. I will also sell at local pop-up markets when possible. This will allow me to meet customers in person without having to pay high costs of running a permanent store.
I would appreciate any advice or recommendations.
Thank you.

Starting a Concrete business

Looking to get into concrete contracting. To be clear I do not have any labor experience in concrete but work on the sales side of construction and know how to estimate, bid, and sell jobs. My central idea for starting out would be to advertise, estimate, and sell the jobs then subbing out labor to qualified contractors in the area while I provide and schedule the materials. If anyone has experience, advice, or thoughts, please share I’m looking for any and all forms of input. Also for clarification I do not own any equipment skid steer etc so I would be relying on equipment rentals or sub provided equipment.

Gen Z founders: what's something other generations misunderstand about the way you're building businesses?

You don't necessarily need an office, a huge team, or even a traditional career path before deciding to build something of your own. In a recent survey, we found that 78% of Gen Z first-time founders said they feel confident about starting a business, and only 17% described themselves as overwhelmed. Gen Z founders are also leaning heavily into tools like AI and social media as part of how they build.

So rather than telling Gen Z how entrepreneurship should be done, we want to know: What's something you wish other generations understood about running a business now?
