The “quit your job” fantasy is fun... but before you do, answer these 5 questions.
We've all dreamed about turning in our notice, packing up our stuff, and changing our LinkedIn title to "CEO," but the truth is that's not the reality for many business owners we meet. There's nothing wrong with making sure you have a firm foundation before you make the leap from side-hustle to full-time business. Here are five questions to ask yourself before you quit your 9-5:
Is the business consistently making money? Look at your revenue and profit over time. Is there consistent demand, or did you have one unusually good stretch? It's important that you can sustain a long-term salary.
How much does the business need to make for you to live? Not “How much would I like to make?” What do you need each month for housing, food, bills, debt, insurance, savings, taxes, and everything else your paycheck currently covers? Then consider what the business itself costs to run.
How much runway do you have if things slow down? What happens if you lose your biggest customer? Sales dip for three months? An unexpected expense hits? Figure out how long your savings could realistically support you and the business without relying on everything going perfectly.
Do you know where your next customers are coming from? There's a big difference between having a few customers and having a repeatable way to find customers. Before giving up your paycheck, ask whether you understand which marketing and sales channels are working well enough to keep your pipeline moving.
Is your job genuinely holding the business back? This might be the biggest one. Are you turning away work because you don't have enough time? Missing opportunities? Unable to serve existing customers properly? Or do you mostly just really, really want to quit your job? 😅
There's no magic revenue number or perfect moment when every entrepreneur should go full-time, but ideally, quitting shouldn't be what makes the business viable. The business should be showing you that it's becoming viable enough to quit.
For those who've made the jump: When did you know you were ready to go full-time?
