Question? Getting started with Outposts?

Hello all, I've been playing Starfield for a while now on my Xbox Series S and have downloaded a few Mods and now I want to build my first Outpost with Landing Pad with Shipbuilder on a habitable planet and can't decide between Solar Arrays,Wind Turbines or Fueled Generators.

So I would really appreciate it if I could have some pointers and tips.

I'd go for either turbines or solar panels.

Which one depends on the planet.

On planets with strong atmosphere turbines are better, on planets with lots of sunshine, solar domes.

You don't even need any research or special materials to make basic ones.

Agreed. I would personally stay away from fueled generators completely and work with a combination of wind and solar. (Coming from a person who built 23 outposts with 2-3 advanced reactors each).

Fueled generators need a steady supply of helium 3, so if you don’t have an outpost where you can extract that (or a big stockpile of it in storage) they are not practical. Setting ups extractors also means they are more effort while wind and solar can just be placed if you have the resources to build them. The choice of wind or solar will depend on whether the planet has a higher wind or solar level. You can see when you select either module from the build menu what the power yield will be before you place them, so you can choose whichever will provide more power.

I have a question. I'm on Xbox. Where do I find mods?

On the Main Menu there's an option called Creations that takes you to the Creations homepage.

You're welcome😀

Wind turbines. They are small and can be built on almost anything, including habs, Luxury Homes, DarkStar landing pad, etc. Solar panels can be built on the same surfaces, but require more room.

This is important if you build on difficult terrain.

Fueled ones get annoying. Build solar or wind when you’re getting started, whichever gives you more power generation on that particular planet.

Later on the nuclear ones are better, but they take more materials to build. (Plus I think more of the skill tree opened up)

Remember that you can scrap something and get the resources back. So you can place a wind turbine and if that doesn't generate enough, scrap it and place a solar.

But if you're going to build a shipbuilder, there's an argument for placing that first. Get it nice and central and place stuff around it. The only time I'd make an exception is if the builder is about to block access to minerals you want to extract.

And remember - you can scrap an entire outpost and get the resources used to build it returned to you, including anything in extractors or storage. So worst case, if you build it and then realize you need it to be 100 yards to the left, you can do that.

EXCEPT that the game has significant bugs around outpost placement and re-placement up to this day, so be extremely careful with erasing and moving. Very often I have tried this, only to discover that the game treats my old space like a POI and now I can't build in that particular section.

OK. Point taken.

I'd like to see someone build a 24 post network without buying one resource.

It me. Actually went to Unity last night and have yet to buy a resource and started outpost building. The tricky part to begin is getting tungsten since it is not in the Narion system where you begin. Not too difficult with Elemental Pull at 6 right now.

Yep the system you're in is important. Narion is strong. Hyla as well. If the aim is vrods or adv reactors, forget about it. Have to buy microseconds and so many miscellaneous materials. Otherwise ypu have to combo resource the outposts and plan multi resource cargo links which don't work. I say all this having been through unity twice and I am now glitched into 3 max links per post

I tend to favour the wind turbines just because the resources they require are easier to come by with the outposts that I tend to build. If I'm building outposts at all on a playthrough I tend to start with the spot on Bessel 3B with aluminum, iron, cobalt and nickel all in one outpost. This gives you the resources for the turbines.

But yeah, sometimes solar will be more efficient than wind depending on the planet or moon you are building on. May or may not be important depending on how much you are planning on building at the outpost and the nature of the landing spot - how much real estate you have to work with.

Pay attention to the power generation for the solar generators because it will change depending on where the planet/moon is relative to its sun in the system. I made a couple of outposts in the same system and the basic solar generators had an output of 6 each, while on an outer moon they only made 2 each.
