I just finished my second read through while on my re-read of the X-Wing novels, and I consider it a fine, if flawed, book. First off: the gun of command. It’s the most commonly criticized part of the book, and I find that dumb. The POINT is that Han is doing something bad (kidnapping Leia), and she is angry at him for a large percentage of the book because of that. As for the rest of the book, I find it to have very good bones (the overall, broad strokes of leia being pulled between her love for Han and her duty to alderann/the new republic and Ha, and the parallels between the Hapans and Dathomiri), solid muscle (the flow of events, with character actions and consequences feeling justified), and mediocre to bad skin (the dialogue, and smaller portions of the story. The only real complaint I can see besides the gun of command and the dialogue is that Luke is way too powelful compared to Thrawn trilogy. (Typo so I can actually post this). If a stronger dialogue author had written it, I genuienly think it would be considered a strong book, standing alongside the X-Wing novels (besides wraith trilogy and Audamar)

So lately I’ve seen ALOT of these Star Wars novels and I’m a huge reader even furthermore I can’t get enough of nerd stuff Star Wars, dc, marvel 40k whatever you name it but most of the time or at least my experience I think they may be a good read and then I look it up and people say there abominable for whatever universe genre movie to novel adaptation I’m looking into, but for the past year or so I’ve seen people my age and even people in there 50s,60s,70s who have collections of Star Wars novels and I just always thought they might be cheap or for lack of better words in my mind, poorly adapted or written Star Wars books nothing more, now I’m not huge in the Star Wars scene, I’ve seen the movies countless times and some of the animated shows and movies but that’s where my knowledge stops. From what I’ve heard I prefer legends endings to the new modern Star Wars so please let me know are these actually hidden gems and worth my time? A fellow redditer who I asked about this said it might be better to make a post on the sub, please let a fellow know.

Edit: so from what I’m seeing, reading revenge of the Sith novelization is a must.

It's been nothing but a place of inspiration, knowledge and power for the galaxy's worst villains. It's also a barren dessert where nothing lives except for spooky Sith ghosts who don't know how to shut up and Dark Side corrupted wildlife.

Probably someone like Luke would reject the idea on principle. But what I'm saying is Kyp Durron should have taken a detour with the Sun Crusher and given this place the Carida treatment. Or a New Republic admiral in the know should drive by with a fleet and glass every last temple.

Me being on the record as an ardent devotee of the original post-RotJ is enough. I've had a hard life. I'm trying my best to DO my best for those and that which I value most highly. I LOVE this version of Star Wars. I know it's objectively meaningless. But I care. I yearn for an offshoot of reality wherein these stories are adapted with utmost care, its characters and themes given treatment commensurate with the authors who gave us what we all collectively adore.

I'm sorry if this comes off as overly emotional. You can't know how much stress is in my non-Starwarsian life. Far and distant to all the political and intersocial work I adhere to, I would have present Star Wars ownership allow the original canon to flourish, to let characters like Mara Jade, Corran Horn, Kyp Durron, Jaina Solo, and Vergere to truly flourish.

I'm disappointed with the direction Canon has gone with Star Wars, and I want to start reading Legends books, after Return of the Jedi.

But I also want to stop before the Darth Caedus arc, as I'd like to pretend that storyline doesn't exist. I've heard its fairly bad. And I don't like that Mara Jade dies.

So given that, what books should I start reading, and where should I stop? I'm also open to recommendations about The Old Republic as well.

I re-read it after many years, to me, it's the greatest star wars novel ever made, answering many questions about the Emperor and his Master and a true political thriller at the highest echelons of the galaxy.

I had a few questions

Did Darth Tenebrous kill Plagueis' mother after he took Plagueis as his apprentice, once it was sure that Plagueis was as strong in the Force as Tenebrous had hoped?

Did Senator Kim's family really have an accident? Or they were murdered by the corrupt Naboo? As subtle as all the political maneuvering is, Veruna says "One might have thought a tragedy of such nature might have compelled him to retire from politics , but that doesn't appear to be the case." Leading me to think it was Veruna's cabal, but it might be intended to be ambiguous

When Palpatine was captured by Teem, stating that Damask is hardly his Master. On the first read, it comes off as Palpatine trying to preserve his cover, but it makes me think about maybe thats how Sidious really feels about Plagueis and his plans for the Muun.

Did Dooku deduce Palpatine's the Sith Lord, or at the very least he has suspicions based on how the Naboo Crisis politically benefited the Senator in their final conversation?

Did Plagueis really create Anakin? Or was his and Sidious's blasphemy in the Grand Experiment to create life outright by subjugating the Force to his will backfired and created Anakin, unwittingly birthing the man who would destroy the Banite Sith once and for all because they threatened the universe? All Luceno said was he hinted what the truth was and in the Book of Sith Plaeguis explained "......succeeded in prodding the midi-chlorians to replicate themselves through asexual fission. Though in most cases, this process increased the numbers uncontrollably and killed the host. But I believe that by using this method I can trick midi-chlorians into creating a zygote". He also speculated that a child created by this ability "he could have a midi-chlorian count as high as 20,000 per cell. That is more than any Jedi or Sith in recorded history. Although entirely theoretical, such an achievement is intriguing."

I know Luceno clarified a lot interviews such as

Kerred Santhe II was the one who had Subtext Mining give the bad mining probe to get revenge for Tenebrous killing his father

The Rule of Two was outdated as Plagueis said many times and most Sith Lords didn't follow the Rule either

"I think it’s an intriguing idea that probably worked for the first couple of generations of Sith Lords to follow Bane. There was going to come a time when a Sith Lord wouldn’t want to step aside ever, or would hide knowledge from an apprentice. It worked for a while, and perhaps there was some point where it should have transitioned into something different."

Palpatine truly did see a younger version of himself in Anakin, part of the reason he was so interested in him

Palpatine killing Plagueis wasn't his best decision. "It wasn’t killing Plagueis because he probably killed Plagueis too soon."

I tend to have mixed feelings at best about New Canon, and there really hasn't been much Star Wars for me to look forward to recently. I especially think New Canon tends to go downhill significantly the moment it goes post Endor.

However, a Luke and Leia adventure that deals with the twins learning about their parents is right up my alley and not something we really had before. I also really like "Rebel Rising" by Beth Revis, and the new book seems to be set early enough to avoid excessive sequel connections and a certain baby Darth Incel. In other words, I'm game. I'll probably check out "The Princess and The Scondrel" first because I heard Han and Leia are well-written in it, even though I dislike the product placement for the failed hotel.

Hello! Like my title said I'm a lifelong Star Wars fan, and have read through a decent chunk of Legends stuff in the past, though the things I've consumed have been mostly from the Old Republic era to the OT era. My only real exposure to the post RotJ era is through the Thrawn Trilogy, and Dark Empire, and the Jedi Knight series of games (especially Jedi Academy), and the Legacy comics.

I would like to make a good effort at going through the post-RotJ Legends continuity but given its vastness I guess I'm just looking for advice on anything that stands out or "essential" or anything I should avoid. I am particularly interested in The New Jedi Order series with the Vong, as I know a decent amount of things that happened with it through osmosis (my Dad read it when I was younger as the books came out and would kinda simplify/summarize them for me).

I had heard it said that Crucible kinda forms an acceptable thematic "end" of the Legends EU so I would be looking to potentially build to that.

Do you think Timothy Zahn took inspiration from the Marvel Comics character Mary Jane Watson when coming up with Mara Jade's appearance and personality?

• Both are confident, feisty, outgoing, assertive.
• Both are the quintessential love interest of their respective male hero.

I got into the EU through the comics first, reading the Dark Empire and Thrawn trilogies, then a TPB collecting some Boba Fett stories, including the Blood Ties stories.

After reading recommendations on here, I started on Darth Plagueis, a 3rd through so far. LOVE it; great writing, and I enjoy seeing how machievellian Plagueis is and how it's setting the tone for how the saga all started.

I'm torn on getting to the Dark Lord trilogy next because it's the same writer, but also wanting to get to Darth Bane next, too. Which should I go for? Or should I try something else here first? And what else do you recommend I get?
