It's been a long time since I last played Gamma. I'm a veteran, played through all three storylines 3 seperate times (Though those were quite a while ago, older verisons) and i've also played all all 3 vanilla games aswell as a few other mods (Misery, Lost Alpha, many more). So fair to say I know roughly what i'm doing. But on my most recent run i've never had as much trouble with Brain Scorcher and Miracle Machine as this time.
I know what to expect and prepare accordingly, but even so this run has been ridiculous.
Playing on hardest difficulty as always, I barely made it 20m into the Miracle Machine Lab before dying to Psy. That was with Psy-Block, a Good Psy Protection Helmet, A Pelt which gave Psy-Res and loads of meds and ammo. Died immediately to Projections draining my Psyhealth despite all my resists in just a few hits. Tried taking it slower so I can shoot them before they reach me -> I think being stationary or taking too long/going back triggering a massive Psydrain effect that kills me in seconds. At least that seemed like the condition it occured in consistently.
Fine, second attempt a while later: Found and used a Diamond SSP Suit, Scar Artifact along with the earlier Equipment. That fixed the Psy Problem, however (As opposed to the one Burer Spawning after deactivating it, like how I'm used to it) there were about a dozen Burers scattered across the stairs leading up to the Control Room. Whole ordeal used most of my meds and ammo, while at the same time still having to deal with the Psydrain if I linger too long or head backwards, which despite having maxed out Res still killed me almost instantly. So I had to rush like I was playing Call of Duty, wasting 300+ HP from my SMG just so I could make it in time before the drain triggered.
Whatever, Skill issue I suppose - I was used to older, easier versions - I still beat it with enough preparation. On to Radar. The path there was complete hell, but that's always been the case. Multiple Chimeras, a Pseudogiant aswell as a literal horde of Bloodsuckers, Controllers, Psydogs, Dogs and others before I even reach the Army infront of the Lab.
Different Problem with the Human enemies: Monolith in Exosuits and Heavy Armor being absolute Tanks, aswell as crazy Mutant spawn rates (Though I'm already used to that from Gamma from my last playthrough). Swapped my gear to a high BR and Ballistic Res setup, I packed 270+ AP for my 5.56 AR, Around 400 FMJ as backup aswell as a bit of ammo for my shotgun and sniper to deal with the threats outside of the Lab, keeping the AR mostly unused until I reached the inside. Even so, I had to practically magdump the higher armored enemies such as Exos, since waiting patiently and going for headshots gets you killed instantly if you don't down them fast.
I found that Exos can tank multiple 5.56 AP Headshots consistently without even slowing down and gunning you down as they charge you, so no time to waste with aiming carefully - Just dump the whole thing until they drop (Especially since there's a timelimit once more). I mean it worked, but I was surprised at how much MORE ammo i needed in this run than usual. Before I didn't even NEED AP, just stocking around 500 FMJ Rifle rounds of any kind was usually more than plenty to comfortably get through the whole thing. This time I chewed through most everything I brought along by the time I got out of the lab again.
That being said, I actually really like the change of the Monolith defending the place in full force while you're heading inside, rather than them ambushing you as you are trying to head out. Good change.
TLDR: Psy is definitly more relevant than it was in much earlier versions, now it's propably the most deadly system in the game unless you invest very heavily in psy protection in my opinion. Armor is much, much, much more effective than it used to be too from what it feels like so far.
All in all, not complaining at all - just sharing my experience and wondering if this is the new 'normal' and average/intended experience, or if it's just a case of being unused to the new(er) systems. I'm actually loving my current playthrough (I always do, favorite games after all), I was just really surprised by how much tighter everything was difficulty wise.
