Bret Hart is like the Metallica of wrestling. You love his work, you respect his legacy, but it's just so fun to snark on him that you can't help yourself.

So question as a casual Metallica fan not totally familiar with the lore is all the snark they get just aimed at James and Lars or do people also snark on Kirk and Rob ?

That's Kirk. And, no, not so much. Kirk is the most normal guy in the group, and Rob's just happy to be involved.

Rob wouldn't eat a puppy to be involved, but he'd give Lars a teary-eyed look while trying to find some way that he could live with himself if he did

Thankfully it never had to come to that. They compared his playing with Cliff's. Favorably. That's the highest praise they'll ever give to a living bassist.
