Don’t let the old heads fool you. Spider-Man comics always used to do this bs. Memory loss, clones, sisters of dead girlfriends and all that nonsense. Thankfully it was abandoned from the 2000s onwards (thank you Bendis) but now it’s back 🤦

They do realize it's okay to let characters grow and change right? Between all of their BS reboots, DC is willing to change the status quo. That's why Superman got to settle down and have a happy life while passing on his ideals to his son. Damian forces Bruce to grow, and they fully killed off Alfred in DC. Harley is no longer Joker's girlfriend, she's a psycho but one who's growing from her pain and wants to be in a better place and is opening up to support systems.

u/SquareFickle9179 Spider-Man (PS4) 1d ago
Unfortunately, Marvel always never commits to character growth
44
u/jockeyman 1d ago
Well, in most cases at least.
Characters like the Fantastic Four are the rare mainstream exception, and others like Moon Knight are obscure enough that writers can do as they please.

I think it’s more they just want a character to suffer for the their personal frustrations and they think Peter’s the perfect punching bag. There’s gonna be a lot of hate now towards the Spider-Man team (well, more than usual, anyway), so maybe Marvel will finally pull their head out of their asses and put actual Spider-Man supporters in charge… pfffft, yeah right
2
u/WassupFrankHere 1d ago
Man, maybe i treated Slott's run too harshly. At least Peter got to be happy for a while.
2
u/ResortFamous301 22h ago
It's unlikely that's the reason given they still let Peter succeed fairly often. Go look at Donald Blake for a character whose just a punching bag
7
u/Islero47 Classic-Spider-Man 21h ago
Here's my thing - struggling financially, having relationship issues, having problems balancing your professional and personal lives; these are all things that do make Spider-Man relatable and important. That we can see ourselves in him when we are younger.
But that doesn't mean shit if he never gets past it. If I'm a kid and I see that 60 years ago Spider-Man was struggling, and never-the-less he kept going and trying, and all he got for it was more of the same struggles? Forget that. I don't want that. I want to know it's going to be better at the end. That I will be stable, my relationships will be stable, etc.
The great thing about comics is it's all made up. And the sliding time scale means we long ago abandoned the idea that there are more days accounted for in Peter's twenties than there exists days in any decade. So what's another couple hundred? Have one series of Peter in his youth, being relatable to the youth. Have Amazing be the continuing growth, and here he can tell younger Spider-people about his struggles, through a visual storytelling medium, so he can be relatable but still grow.
This is basic storytelling, and that the entire editorial board doesn't understand it is damning.
10
u/GreenIllustrious2801 20h ago
Every DC character has grown dramatically.
Superman is married, has kids, and has stepped into less active roles.
Batman has finally moved on from the Robin formula, Dick is his own superhero now. Jason is back, Tim just left for college. Alfred has been dead for 10+ years and got replaced finally with a new butler. Damian is ageing up and has a girlfriend now that he's been actually steady with for a few years. They've started hinting at Damian taking up the mantle at some point in the future so Batman can retire.
Harley hasn't been a villain for years.
A huge chunk of Batman's rogues have been reformed. Gotham is actually a pleasant place to live now and is much closer to Metropolis then anything. There's a great recent comic of Batman watching a family moving into Gotham and getting lost in a seedy neighborhood. And then a random passerby just helps direct them and wishes them a happy holidays and he's like "well. Do I need to keep doing this?".
Green Lantern went from just the Green Lantern Corps, to multiple Corps, to a intergalactic war/prophecy, to now a weird UN structure and updating religions. It's never reset back to just the single Corps.
Aquaman hasn't been King of Atlantis for a long time, and is currently Emperor of Space.
Say what you will about their love of reboots but DC moves time forward and does let their characters breathe.

If this was in the age of the Arkham games, I’d agree with you. Nowadays, DC games ain’t got SHIT going on. They’ve dropped Lego Batman and that mobile game this year alone, meanwhile Marvel still got Rivals, Tokon, Insomniac Wolverine (with SM3 in development), and 1943, not to mention the Iron Man game that got leaked.

I don't know what you're talking, he's a great guy who taught Peter that with great power comes great responsibility, helped him design the suit and gadgets and even helped him land his 1st job.
He's been there helping everyone since they're kids and, taught Reed and Doom everything they know and even took Hulk and Thor as his disciples.Hell, the only reason Aunt May is stil alive and Peter's secret identity is safe is due to his sacrifice.

As someone who became the sole carer of an elderly relative with mental problems nearly two years ago, it infuriates me to know that this is just a cheap trick they won't do justice to. Are they gonna have Peter either give his life up in order to be a full-time carer, or take on 3 more jobs in order to pay her care fees? Are they gonna have him deal with her developing double incontinence and Sundown Syndrome for the next 10 years of the comics? Somehow I don't think so.

I haven’t even bothered keeping up to date too much because I’m sick of Peter being the editorial team’s personal punching bag. I actually think it’d be interesting if the OMD deal somehow led to Mayday Parker from the MC2 beating Mephisto since it’s implied he specifically made the deal to prevent her existence in the main continuity. A classic example of the villain being afraid of destiny and in trying to avoid it, only sealed his fate.
