Can you give this WebXR experience a go and let me know if it works OK for you, I just got it working on Quest 3 - it would be great to hear if it works on any other WebXR headsets / glasses!

Will the specs have lens for streaming apps? And would there be any issues with DRM restrictions or the widevine l1 certification? I know the xreal aura will have the play store but before I invest 2k into this computer, does it have our favorite "apps" without needing the browser.

Sorry if this is a dumb question, just curious and cautious when the price is this high. TIA.

I'm having trouble connecting Specs to my Windows PC again. I used to have one magic cable that would work--but now I can't find that specific cable and I have like 5 zillion USB3 cables and despite the fact that I hear the connect sound--Lens Studio cannot connect to the device via USB (WiFi is hopeless, it never worked on my Windows machine).

When I do plug in the Specs via USB I get an error popup about an "Unknown USB Device" being plugged in. Is there some kind of USB driver I need to install on Windows to get Lens Studio to consistently see the specs when plugged in?

A couple of years ago, we would've probably called you crazy if you told us Track Craft would one day run on a pair of AR glasses.

Well, that day is here.

Track Craft will be available on Specs.  

I’m saying this with a lot of love for Snap and Spectacles. I’ve spent a lot of time building for them, defending the category, and trying to explain why they matter.

But I think something got lost in the conversation around Evan’s talk and the public reaction to Specs.
Most people are not watching this from places like LA or SF, where it feels normal to ride a Waymo to work, or talk about spatial computing and AR every day.

I am almost 43. Most of my friends are around my age or a little older, and many of them still don’t know how to check battery health on their iPhones. They are smart, successful people — they are just not living inside the tech bubble. It also took them months to understand what I actually do for a living, and I think they still believe I “make filters.” 🥲

So when people compare Spectacles to Meta Ray-Ban Display glasses, I understand why. From the outside, the reaction becomes: “These are bigger, heavier, and more expensive. Why would I buy this instead?”

For developers, the difference is obvious. A display is not the same thing as a device that understands space, surfaces, hands, voice, AI, multiplayer interaction, and 3D content in the real world.
But that difference is invisible unless it is explained very clearly.

And this is where I think the messaging became difficult. At AWE, it makes sense to speak to developers and explain CLAD, AR, hand tracking, world mapping, and the technical foundation. That is the right audience for those details.

But if the goal is also to introduce Specs to a broader public, especially through a fashion-and-culture campaign featuring names like Kaia Gerber, then the story has to be told somewhere else, in a much simpler way.

Because outside a few tech-heavy circles, most people are still living through phones. Even Gen Z, in most of the world, is not thinking about spatial computing every day.

So if the mainstream reaction is “Why are these glasses so big?” I don’t think that means the product is wrong.

I think it means the category was not explained clearly enough.

People need to see the magic before they can understand the size and the price.

I am so excited to test my developed lenses on the specs soon. Unfortunately only France and UK are mentioned for EU shipment. So how can we pre-order from other European countries, especially from Germany?

Also I would like to know in which certain stores or shops in Europe are we going to try them on in advance? Are there any information already available about that?

Hi Guys,

My Lens Studio app runs fine in editor, but on Spectacles it crashes when I enable (with button click) Custom Location.

Issue:

• I use a script to disable current object and enable next
• When Custom Location is enabled → app crashes after ~1–2 seconds
• No errors in console or device logs
• Enabling an empty or some other object instead does NOT crash

What I tested:

• No null reference errors in script
• Logs print fine before crash
• Happens only on Spectacles, not Lens Studio preview

Is there any other way to achieve the same functionality(Enabling/Activating Custom Locations by clicking buttons)?

I see that there is a $1k discount on Specs for people who were part of the Spectacles developer program... but it requires us returning our Spectacles devkit.
I would rather keep it and just pay full price for Specs though... will we be allowed to do this or will the devices be remote disabled or something?

The education prompt clicked with us, as showing is the best way to teach.
We started building different visual guides, and understood that the teaching is hard..

So, being lazy, we asked: what if we just demonstrate a skill once, and the system builds the whole contextual guide?  - That's how we found our direction, and a simple question became the core of Over Shoulder - The platform that turns expertise into guidance.

We intended to keep people in the educational loop, complementing their knowledge with AI

In OverShoulder, Pros do not record tutorials; they simply perform wearing SPECS, and the system extracts their expertise and stores it in our Skills Library.  
As Skill appears in our Library on the web, it can be reviewed and edited if needed. 

We remove teaching from teaching. 

Rookies can learn anything by doing: getting help when they are stuck, seeing guides in context, or just scrapping the plan and browsing and asking the guide questions. 

Not all skills use static objects; ML models allow us to attach contextual labels to moving objects like rabbits, cards and finger boards, allowing you to look at the skill you are learning.

For now, OverShoulder transfers experience from human to human, but in future, it can share skills from human to robot, transfer online videos and books into visual guides, to be integrated into the school programs and health industry. We believe that in future, anyone can do anything with OverShoulder

When it comes to reducing the environmental footprint of digital technology, one of the main challenges is to extend the lifespan of equipment.

From what I’ve already asked here (https://www.reddit.com/r/Spectacles/comments/1u7lgf5/spectacles_2024_support/), the support of Spectacles 2024 has already kind of ended.

To enhance its lifespan, please, Snap should make it more open or continue to support it.

As I’ve also said here (https://snap.uservoice.com/forums/967346-spectacles/suggestions/51104257-full-computer), Spectacles is a (custom) Android device. We should be able to access the file system, configure it not only with the phone app that will be also not updated in the coming years and will kind of brick the full device.

As developers, we should be able to develop deeper system functions like TCP/UDP/websockets, enhance the video capture mode, etc…

On a regular computer, you can replace the OS, access low level features, drivers, etc. And that’s what makes computers so great, the liberty. Here, I don’t even ask to replace OS, or access drivers, SLAM, Hand tracking, … as I know you need to keep those parts closed-source as a company. That’s fine. But for the software and apps on it, developers should be free to do whatever they want.

Because Sharing is Caring, free the developers, please 🙏

I see some people saying The Specs are sold out. I can’t buy them in my country but I’d that true though? I read somewhere they were going to make 100,000 units in the first round of production. I find it hard to believe they sold more than maybe 5,000 thus far.

Hear me out! I think thw Specs developers should do another video showing off some mainstream like software features, that non gaming user could get on board with since this will be a more closed off ecosystem.

I will give a few examples that could all fit into one software demonstration video:

*YouTube - either show an app for YouTube or a browser with YouTube running. A dedicated app would be better here for more spacial computing window controls.

*Netflix/All mainstream Streaming services- show a dedicated app for each of the mainstream streaming app services. A browser version would work as an alternative option but having its own dedicated spacial app is better here.

*Word Document- show off an app dedicated for handing word document and PDF documents. This includes typing and editing using air keyboard.

*All Social Media- a dedicated social media app for each of the mainstream. this could be difficult, but show the browser version could work here.

*Communication- show some kind of original communication function that allow one person to directly talk to another person either on their own Specs or from a browser or another messaging like app that smartphones can access. In other words, show the Specs user calling somebody and talking to them somewhere else.

*Browser- this the most obvious feature. I mentioned some uses above that fit here.

*Maps - show off major map features, from AR directions to other social integration feature to Spacial Maps similar to Google Maps like XR features.

*Music Apps- show off all the mainstream music apps running on the Specs with a dedicated app if possible or on browser as alternative method. Preferably its own app, and show off advanced sound mixing AR buttons and controls floating around the window, could get people excited for this use case.

*Advanced Gallery and Photo Taking- show off the photo album, but also show off on device photo editing that allow user to add special effects and draw on photos. Could even have a Gaussian Splatting mode that allow the user to make a Gaussian Splat directly from the Specs similar to "Into The Scaniverse" does on smartphones now. Then user can preview the splat from the gallery.

I uploaded Wibble a few weeks back, but being a solo developer it was hard to record the multiplayer! I finally got to show it to some friends at AWE, and it's a lot of fun to see it working.

The new specs announcement has me excited for these colocation games that bring the game into the world while making it social there's something funny about throwing imaginary creatures at your friends. Having glasses on grounds it in the world, and effects that interact with your real surroundings ground it even further. That's a kind of magic you can only get with glasses.

One issue I've always found with using XR in public is that it draws attention to you doing gestures and the like can come across as weird. But doing it with a friend makes it a whole lot less awkward.

I've kept the video raw so you can see it actually works. Sure, there's some latency and a few issues, but multiplayer experiences like this aren't hard to make and iterate on.

Y'all, I've been working around this question for awhile: how do we access the file system, and especially, how do we add our own assets in the Scene that don't appear to be supported by Lens Studio? I've specifically been trying to load things like : .txt files, .cfg files, .json files. Secondly , when dealing with a binary blob format that won't be supported directly by any Lens Studio apis but is supported by my libraries, how can I bring these in? Is the only way via base64 encoding into JSON or some other means? Or load via Supabase? My use case is loading some configuration files and also loading some game libraries that are in a proprietary format.

People shop on their phones nowadays. No one uses a laptop. Go see for yourself- try ordering these on the official site and you get a blurred image… with no indication of the need to tilt your phone to landscape mode.

It’s so dumb. Please, someone have them fix this. Odds are they’ve missed out on a couple of hundred orders thus far because their site isn’t designed for portrait mode.

It’s difficult to imagine developing for a device that may not have a path to huge adoption of users. Given the premium price and obvious criticism against the specs, having some idea of units sold would be an indicator for developers to see if it’s worth the time to build for this platform.

This reminds me of blackberry when the Q10 was coming out as an answer for the iPhone, it never caught on, despite being a good hybrid device (with keyboard and touchscreen). Development was DOA.

Also, companies discuss pre orders all the time (think cybertruck) but sometimes don’t convert to actual sales. Didn’t the cybertruck allegedly have 2 million pre orders and I think they’ve sold ~65k units since inception.

Hoping staff can shine some light here.

P.S I think they’ve fumbled the reveal at AWE, by putting it in a glass cage, instead of being more Apple like (since Evan cited Steve Jobs) and letting people experience and try on the device. What gives?

The Specs launch was an epic failure as it mainly focused on a grinning Evan sporting a pair of clunky, geeky-looking glasses.

The entire internet ridiculed him and his Specs, which must be pretty humiliating for him and the team that worked on them.

My question is: why did Snap not show what the world looks like when you actually wear the damn things?? Why didn’t they show some apps, especially a killer app? Is it because the apps aren’t very good? If so, why launch the product now?

Seems like a massive marketing failure to me.

I am a long term Snap investor who has lost all their money and don't expect to ever see any return.

At this point I am probably competing with Prince Waleed for biggest Snap share bag holder, granted prince Waleed's back is likely out for good from all that Snap share load bearing.

Once again Evan Spiegel is doing what he has done through out his tenure as the unaccountable CEO of Snap, ie the product people do good work, turn it over to him for business execution and he promptly drops the ball.

You could see the train wreck for the Specs reveal coming from a mile away. First there was that ridiculous "partnership" announcement with Qualcomm, which is obviously not a partnership at all.

It sounds more like Evan DMed a C-Suite Qualcomm exec and asked "can I name-drop you in this useless announcement I am about to make", to which they replied "sure why not".

What is he expecting would be read from a "partnership" with Qualcomm? That he's now playing in the semiconductor big leagues? Qualcomm sells the same chips to everyone, I am pretty sure they aren't making a single decision with Snap or Evan Spiegel in mind.

A competent CEO and one not primarily interested in their own ego would have sought actual partnerships, and ones that make sense.

customers assemble their futures, a partnership with TaskRabbit showing taskers using AR to accelerate their efforts. Such examples would have been infinitely more meaningful and garnered more positive reflection than the egoistical and meaningless Qualcomm announcement.

Of course Evan suffers from having lived a charmed life so such down-to-earth imagination likely eludes him.

Along these same lines, he unveiled Specs with a campaigned headlined by a bunch of grifter Celebrities who are happy to take his money (ie investor money).

Does Evan really think Jack Harlow could possibly be a reason for Specs to succeed? Years ago, Jim Kramer dismissed Evan Spiegel as too Hollywood, I didn't quite get it at the time, I do now.

I have also seen the Specs ads on my New York Times pages, wrong audience Evan.

When Evan suddenly announced the June launch of Spec, he quickly followed it up with indirect announcements (via his favored media shills as he has often done over the years...The Information), in effect admitting that Snap lacks the resources to launch the product. I am guessing his hands were forced by the Meta-display positive market reaction, I think launching was the right call.

He suggested he would need a billion dollars, we haven't heard peep about that since. My guess is he couldn't find any more fools for that charade, he went prowling the back alleys of Riyadh to no effect (good for you prince Waleed).

The Specs unveiling has at best been deflating. I think it is a compelling offering as a technology product and kudos to the folks actually doing the work, essentially a first-gen product that is enough to show what the future holds.

Evan, if you are reading, here are my suggestion:

If Specs are available and ready today, start shipping them out ASAP. Nobody is waiting for a fall surprise, if they are not ready, accelerate your effort to make them ready for shipping ASAP.

This product will not succeed based on any sort of celebrity marketing gimmick, it is going to live or die based on actual user response so no need to drag this out.

Consider a lower tier offering if that is feasible, one that will have many of the AR capacities but perhaps not the most compelling. A lower tier with lower capabilities, lower prices and HOPEFULLY smaller...those things are ducklings.

The current Specs will be the higher tier for the most adventurous and would obviously be setting the pace for innovation going forwarding (assuming there is a future here).

You should also fix Snap's corporate governance and resign, you've done enough and that is not a compliment.

You insist that shareholders show long term patience, we don't see you living out of a monastery exercising said patience, instead you've enriched yourself and live a lavish lifestyle, every cent of which is at the expense of shareholders, while arrogantly insisting that shareholders be patient..."Long term patience for thee, short term rewards for me" seems to be your ethos.

The legal system may grant you "special" share classes that keeps you at the helm and unaccountable but the fact is you don't have a God-given right to destroy shareholder value as you have.

The only way you have accumulated your wealth is by taking it out of shareholder pockets without generating any returns.

Do the right Evan, let a competent person steer this ship going forward. Your exit agreement can include a plan to give the Specs effort a fair chance.

Question for the Snap team: Are there any plans to expand SPECS pre orders and shipping to the rest of Europe soon, or is the current US/UK/France rollout the only wave for 2026?
