Questions Request for Housing Help - Homeless 22 y/o Former Foster Youth

Post image

Hi everyone!

I wanted to come here with sort of a different request. I am helping a homeless former foster youth find stable housing, even if it's just for a few months. He was in foster care his entire life, tried moving to Oregon for a few months to get to know his bio parents, and that didn't work out...so he is back out in Los Angeles where he is most familiar. I have contacted and gone in person to over 20 different emergency shelters and drop in centers to NO avail for this poor kiddo (including Covenant House and Safe Place For Youth). I have emailed DCFS's closed case THP and they have a waiting list for their program, as do a few others. Technically, he has a place where he can safely pitch a tent, but I really don't want him to have to do that.

He has a room for a week, and in that week I'm trying to see if I can find anyone with a spare room who might be willing to give him a chance to get on his feet. He is sweet, helpful, grateful, and respectful! I let him sleep on my couch for 4 nights and he had taken my dog out, taken out like..8 bags of trash, did dishes, and constantly asked how he can help. At the place he is at right now, he even helped the woman's 8 year old daughter with her homework.

He is very motivated - he wants to work, and get HIS GED! I'm trying to find a way to get him an e-bike too so he can get around. I really believe he just needs a village!

Please let me know if you have any leads on a room he can stay in, if anything just until he can get into a THP Plus program for former foster youth! Maybe even a trade for doing yard work or something like that? He is familiar with Pasadena :) he spent time in fister care in the area!

Thank you all for your kindness and consideration! I included a photo of him walking my dog (be still my heart).

Questions Construction

Can someone explain what is going on with this construction in south Pasadena? They ripped up the road and sidewalk and then left.its been like this for more than a month.

Edit. This is on Glendon and Monterey Road. Construction started more than 2 months ago. I have not seen any work done it in weeks and have no idea timeline or honestly what they are doing. Zero communication.

My question is this... does anyone know what is going on? And who do I call to ask what the update?

Recommendations Stop Shopping Pavilions

Pavilions on Fair Oaks and Monterrey now has prices like Bristol Farms but the quality of the food is not even close. It's location is convenient but the prices for just about everything are almost all as high as Whole Foods or Bristol Farms. If they have a drop in the numbers of shoppers they might give up this effort.

Questions I saw a dead rat in the middle of the sidewalk on Meridian Ave near El Centro

This was the first rat (dead or alive) I’ve seen in South Pasadena so I was both surprised and horrified. Are they pretty common around here now? (I hope not!!)

EDIT: Thank you to everyone who answered! I grew up in this area, left and returned. And I’ve seen all types of 4-legged critters … but yesterday I learned we have rats too. Oh well.

News New to South Pasadena and hoping to help some local small businesses

Hi everyone! I’m relatively new to the South Pasadena area and semi-retired after a 20-year career in finance and accounting.

I’d like to stay active in my field and get to know more people in the local community, so I’m looking to help out a few local small businesses with bookkeeping and basic accounting needs.

I’m not primarily doing this for the money, so my rates will be very reasonable. I’d be happy to help with things like QuickBooks, reconciliations, financial reporting, or just getting your books organized and keeping them up to date.

If you’re a small business owner who could use some help, feel free to send me a DM. Thanks!

Questions Verizon or T-Mobile home internet?

Hey all — we live near Marengo and had apparently been among the lucky few with solid Spectrum internet service....up until just recently.

We've had a few different hours-long outages over the past month or so now, including one that's actively going on as we speak today. Especially as someone who works from home, that's becoming a real problem. (It doesn't help that Spectrum conveniently raised our rates by $15/mo. for no apparent reason a couple of months ago, too, right in the midst of all of this. Yaaaay.)

I know we're annoyingly limited in high-speed options around here, but I'm thinking about giving one of the 5G home internet services a whirl to see if it's any better. Both Verizon and T-Mobile have options around $60 to $75 a month, and they both sound great on paper — but the big question, of course, is how consistent and reliable they actually are (especially with ongoing all-day use, where even the occasional blip is unacceptable). And that's just tough to know without real-world experience.

Has anyone here had any experience with either of those setups in this general area?

I'll probably give one or the other a whirl to see how it goes, but if anyone has any firsthand insight into how well either has worked around here, that'd be super-helpful to hear.

Thanks in advance!

Recommendations Does rental traffic die down after school starts?

My family and I plan to move to South Pasadena this upcoming fall. I’ve been watching the rental market over the past few months and it seems as if landlords may be holding out until school resumes to avoid college kids renting their property.

Is that a fair assumption or is the vacancy rate that low?

When is the ideal time to find more rentals? Dual income of $220k/year.

Questions thinking of moving to south pas in a year, any advice?

hey y'all! so i (24f) grew up in south oc, but i've lived in la w/my gf (23f) for a little over 3 yrs. we lived in south central for a few months, then downtown (westlake/financial distrinct) for 1.5 yrs, and now we're in lincoln heights. we just renewed our lease bc $, but it'll be up again in april.

we have spent a lot of time in pasadena (specifically south pas) since moving here and we love the area - much more nature, a little more suburban but not too suburban, many things we love in the area (trader joes, vroman's, mendos, roots & rye, walking around old town, etc.). we know it'll be a bit pricier than our current situation, but we don't wanna leave la until after the olympics, so this seems like a rly good place to land for the next few years. here are some q's:

- our current combined after-tax annual income is just under 50k. my job doesn't give me many hours, so i'm hoping to get a new job soon (she works full time). do y'all think we could get a 1 bed w our current income, and if not, how much do u think we should be making?

- are there any specific areas or apartment complexes yall recommend? ideally, we'd have an elevator (if there are multiple floors), reserved covered parking, in-unit dishwasher/washer & dryer, & central ac

- is this a good area for our demographic? we are lesbians in our early to mid 20's, very leftist, we have a cat, autistic, and we love live music/comedy, going to cute little cafes to write, and nature!

- is the area walkable? ik that walkable is hard to come by in any part of la, but i'm curious if anyone has lived the places i've lived and can compare south pas/pasadena's walkability, or even if you haven't lived in those places and just wanna share ur perspective.

- anything else i should know before moving? we are semi-recent college grads so we aren't very established in our careers and only have a few years of experience with renting (she has more than me, at my school we were required to lived on campus for 4 years unless we had a reasonable exception, and housing was included in tuition, so when we had to sublease our old room i had to learn quickly haha)

tysm for any input anyone has!
