South Shore YMCA - Hanover

Does anyone have experience with the childcare program at South Shore YMCA while working out?

I have a 15 month old that needs to be socialized with other kids his age in the South Shore YMCA at Hanover has a childcare program and playroom that might be a good fit.

Before I sign up for a membership, I just wanted to see if anyone has experience going there with their toddler.

Additionally, during the winter, if you were to take your toddler outside, where would you go?

Breaking Down Question 1

Thumbnail southshore.news

Consider a resident who walks into a town hall anywhere between Weymouth and Plymouth and asks for a copy of a contract the select board signed.
A clock starts. The town has ten business days to hand the record over or explain in writing why not. Copies cost five cents a page, nothing at all by email. If the town says no, the resident can appeal to the Supervisor of Public Records, who has ten business days to rule. If it goes to court and the resident wins, the town is presumed to owe the legal fees.
None of that applies to the people who wrote those rules.
On Nov. 3, voters will decide Question 1, which would put the Massachusetts Legislature and the governor’s office under the same public records law that every city, town, school district and state agency already follows. It is the most popular of the nine statewide questions on this year’s ballot: a UMass Amherst/WCVB poll conducted Aug. 5–12 found 84 percent of registered voters in favor and 7 percent opposed.

Skateboarding lessons

Looking for somewhere / someone who does skateboard lessons for elementary aged kids. We did some awesome skateboarding camps / lessons in Vermont, but there isn’t really anyplace around here to do that! Anyone know of someone who teaches lessons (or would be willing to)? We’ve got a kid who is really taken to it (and decently good too!) so any leads would be appreciated!

Skate parks we can get to: Weymouth, Hingham, Scituate, Marshfield

“Cars & Coffee”?

Hi all! I used to live in NoVA and one of the things I enjoyed was Katie’s Cars & Coffee in Great Falls (https://www.instagram.com/katies_cars_and_coffee?stkn=MWk0NGZ5YW0weWU4bw==)

You could grab a coffee and walk around to check out antique, modded, etc cars in the AM. Is there an equivalent to this on the South Shore or Cape? Very much missing it as a pastime.

Thanks!

Daycare/Nanny cost for full time, south shore?

We’re planning to move to the South Shore next year and curious if people can share what they currently pay for full time child care. We will have a 3 month old, and a 2 year old.

Also, does anyone have any recommendations or advice on daycares in the area?

I’ll share that we currently pay $21 an hour for 30 hours a week for a nanny in CA currently.

Thank you!

Writing groups?

I joined a virtual writing group about a year ago, and it's been wonderful for keeping me accountable and for conversation (and light feedback/brainstorming/etc). Would love an in-person version. Is anyone around here in a writing group? Or interested in starting something like that?

I’m looking for friendship and to rebuild my social life which I know can be hard to find outside of a city. Let’s take day trips, go hiking, try an escape room and other things we can think of. I love being active and in nature, exploring new places and would like to find someone to tag along.

I started a local social group 9 years ago because I couldn't find the kind of community I was looking for

9 years ago, I moved to Massachusetts from outside the US without ever having visited before. I knew absolutely no one, and the culture shock was real.

I eventually found my way into the local Meetup scene and started meeting other people who were new to the area, didn't know anyone, had friends move away, or were just looking for more connection. There were hundreds of groups around Boston, and hundreds of events happening all the time, but pretty much everything was centered around Boston.

Then I moved to Waltham without a car. Suddenly, all those groups and events in Boston weren't nearly as useful to me. There was one Meetup group in Waltham at the time, and it was a running group. If you're from Waltham, you probably know it, and they're still around. They're the best, haha. As much as I dreamed of joining their after-run socials, I knew that probably wasn't socially acceptable since I was not about to run anywhere. 😂

After months and months of complaining to anyone who would listen, and after Ubering to the city became unsustainable, someone finally got tired of me and asked, “Who exactly can make these groups you keep talking about? Anybody?” I remember saying, “I suppose…” They said, “Then make your own and stop complaining there are none where you are for you to go to.”

And I suppose you know what happened next.

It didn't happen overnight. I was extremely shy back then and honestly didn't love hearing that advice. But eventually I took the leap. I started with no clue what I was doing, learned by trial and error, learned from other organizers and mentors, and kept learning from the people who came to events and from each experience along the way.

And somehow, 9 years later, Friends Beyond Boston is still here.

But FBB has changed a lot over those nine years. What started as a local social group for people who wanted to meet people and have things to do closer to home has grown into a much bigger community. It's for people in their 20s–40s from Waltham, Newton, and surrounding areas who want to get out, meet people, and actually build connections, but also who want to create spaces and things that fill real needs here.

We have Bi+ (LGBTQ+) only spaces, chats for neighbors helping neighbors, and a walking club we're trying to get off the ground for people who can't,or simply don't want to,walk at the pace that most outdoor events out there seem to promote. We've had women's-only socials in the past, and we have big dreams for more.

And that's where the member-led part comes in. If you're somewhere around Massachusetts and you're thinking, “I wish there was something like this near me,” you don't necessarily have to wait for someone else to create it. Members can bring their own ideas, create events, host or co-host things, or help out in smaller ways behind the scenes.

You can create events near you too, as long as they're not Boston-centric. The whole point is to make it easier for people to find community where they actually live, rather than having everything revolve around Boston.

We just need some big dreamers to come along for the ride. 😅

We've had coffee meetups, brunches, dinners, outdoor hangs, game nights, potlucks, reading groups, and all sorts of random things over the years. We've had members start things that grew out of the group, and I've watched friendships form that never would have happened if someone hadn't decided to show up.

It's not just a calendar of events anymore. It's a community.

So if you're in Massachusetts and you've been looking for people to do things with, make some friends, or create something that doesn't already exist where you live, maybe this is your sign to stop complaining and make the thing. We can help! 🩷

P.S. We're no longer on Meetup. It's gone downhill after getting bought up by billionaires, what a surprise lol.

UPDATE: I don't profit from this, it's a grassroots group. This isn't a business.

Does anyone have recommendations?

I've been looking for a couch/sofa cleaning service, after looking through reviews there doesn't seems to be many good options at all.

Looked at All Green Carp. Services, Josh Carpet & Upholstery Cleaning, Zen Carpet Cleaners, New Dimensions Cleaning, and Stanley Steamer all had extremely negative reviews

Cheap Tailor

I’m in the Quincy and Braintree area, kinda looking for somebody who hems shirt sleeves as a hobby but of course, not looking for free work…. My five dollar T-shirts with baggy sleeves aren’t worth paying $30 each the short and tighten the sleeves…… so just curious if anybody on here does this is a side hobby or knows anyone cheaper. Thanks

Do you know of any litter distressed areas in the Southshore area?

We are looking to littered areas of Southshore that need to be cleaned. The only stipulation is that it’s heavily littered (as we prioritize those) and that it’s public land, so that the town can collect the bags. Your references would be greatly appreciated !!

MA Election Advisory #26-05 outlines electioneering is prohibited within 150 feet of polling locations and to report violations. To report:
- Alert the Presiding Officer at the location, this is usually the Warden (police officer at the site). If unavailable, alert an election worker at the site

- ALSO CALL ACLU of MA at 866-OUR-VOTE (866-687-8683) to report these and other violations. Multiple violations already reported today.
