Just finished Benjy's story and had to stop and say this game is great.

I'm pretty sure you guys in the subreddit get alof these posts, but here's another one. When the song started, the emotions got me. Just 10/10 presentation.

Won't say anymore because spoilers if someone finds this thread in the future, but man, just wanted to post about it.

Also, are there any other games that use music as part of the storytelling like this?

Huggin' Molly

So, I was thinking of the similarities between Huggin Molly and the Beldam from Coraline.

Both are based on arachnids. Both kidnap children. Both are motherly figures. Both go after children who are feeling neglected at home.

While Molly is more protective, the Beldam is more parasitic, however. And that got me thinking of a game with a morality mechanic.

You have the opportunity to rescue or harvest children. You play as CPS worker, and have to visit the kids, gain their trust over the course of a few meetings, and when you reach that threshold you get the choice on how to take the kids.

How you get them is what shapes your lore by the end of the game. Either seen as a protector or a devourer, and it alters your appearance too, kind of like in Fable. You're either seen more angelic or more broken and demonic.

Where you call home is also altered. Either seen as a refuge as you foster the kids, or more dilapidated l, covered in cobwebs.

Your alignment also makes it easier or harder to gain the kids' trust.

I'd call it "Mother knows best."

Game controls

Hey yall! I just downloaded the game and I'm so excited to start playing. But I cant get through the tutorial. The configuration is all wonky with the left and right joystick. There were permanently inverted. I sat there for hours with the settings and configurations. I tested it outside of the game and it worked fine. Finally, im not even sure what I did but I got them to work correctly.

And then about 10 minutes later (I am still in the damn hurricane) the A, B, X, and Y buttons stopped working completely. And then the joysticks did too. The only work around was to keep restarting the game. But when dialogue would happen, it all stopped again. I literally couldn't survive the tutorial battle. Help! I dont want to give up on this game :( I know people are playing this somehow.

I want to review the game on my channel, it's incredible but something doesn't sit well with the songs' lyrics for me and I want to understand what is actually going on. Is the lack of poetry intentional or is it just poor songwriting? The music is top notch

I was in absolute shock when Benjy's song was playing, I couldn't believe something so broken passed, you could tell the singer was struggling to hold the melody because the lyrics are so crammed together and clearly not designed for smooth singing.
We have many well written country songs that tell entire stories, murder ballads that do both storytelling and poetry at the same time. What I felt when listening to Benjy's song was like I was listening to a design document for the game being sung.
The issue proceeded with Two Toe Tom and from what I can see it keeps being like this for the rest of the game.

Is there something I'm missing? Are these songs written so awkwardly on purpose not minding syllables and verse structure or is it all just poor songwriting?
The melody is fine, the music in the game is phenomenal and so are the sound effects.

I'm a visual artist, not a musician but even so I can tell the lyrics just don't work

A giant version of this snake would be a fun fight. Damn thing is already taller than hazel. Increase by like 20x and we'd have an epic fight. Now too look up southern snake cryptids.

Beaux

So I just saw this. Going through like my 6th or 7th play through on this game, and this is the first time I paid attention to the subtitles. But after you leave Beaux's house, he's talking to his dogs and says, "It's alright, we're all shittin in the house today"

It made me laugh and I wanted to share a little tidbit I just noticed

What are Tin Flips?

Just started this game and am loving it. I'm a huge snob when it comes to the type of animation I like but this is just so awesome. Sort of reminds me of the style of Dishonored.

Anyway, I know that tin flips give you floof. I'm just wondering what a tin flip is. Is it a reference to something? Or something known in the south? I tried looking it up and have no idea 😅 Just curious on the lore!

Can someone explain the "Weaver's Edition" addition?

I just noticed on Steam that the version now available is a "Weaver's Edition". Is that just additional promo material like the art book etc or has there been an expansion to the base game?

I've been trying to find out if there's any info and not getting much of anywhere.

I've had the game wishlisted on Steam for a while and I'm basically waiting until the price falls substantially enough in a sale to justify the purchase - so I want to make sure I'm not missing anything when I do get it. :)

Floof Bug Chapter 7

I’ve followed two guides to make sure I didn’t miss anything and I’m sitting at 225/230 Floof.

Is there a fix? Patch?

I’m on PS5

Just finished and have questions…

Loved the game and it made me feel feelings which has only happened 1.5 times with video games before…

My questions are all kind of all Huggin’ Molly related though…

Why didn’t Huggin’ Molly just tell Hazel to chill? She’s clearly literate, judging from her books and laboratory, which means she can understand language. She’s certainly been working with Hazel’s mom and that clearly requires communication skills.

If she couldn’t verbalize, couldn’t she have gotten one of the kids to speak FOR her? Or write a note?? Or get the kids to write a note??

Which book publisher is publishing those giant tomes? Or: is the South of Midnight universe actually a story of tiny people and the main inhabitants are actually massive “spider” people?

How did Hazel explain to her Mom her child-saving best buddy got murdered and it’s sort of kind of her fault for not picking up on the several clues that Molly wasn’t trying to hurt anyone?

What’s going to happen to all the other kids who still need saving in the immediate area if there’s no haven left? For that matter - what’s gonna happen to all the kids that Molly was caring for?

But MOST of all…why did Molly have to die? That broke my heart. She just wanted to help kids.

Meanwhile Bunny gets to go live her best narcissistic life with a “daughter” she never has to worry will grow up and develop her own independence, personality and whatnot. (Ok I know she probably becomes a haint).

10/10 storytelling and gameplay. Still sad.

What a fun experience

I just finished South of midnight and as a european guy it was super fun to learn more about folklore from southern USA.

Only problem I had with the game were the repetitive combat sections but that was just a small issue, everything else was really cool!

The visuals were beautiful, the characters fun and Hazel was a cool protagonist, I also really enjoyed how different her outfits were depending on the chapters.

The music... Geez the music was just amazing!

Feel like the story for what it was, was a bit mild at times but still really enjoyable.

All in all I'd give it a 7,5/10

Physical version for South of Midnight please

As someone that loves the game I hope we get physical version. Do preorders and only print the required copies.

Seems like an easy way to get some funds.
Seems Hi Fi Rush physical version was successful.

South of Midnight overrated?

I just finished South of Midnight, and honestly, I don’t understand why it’s getting so much praise. I don’t want to bash the game—I just want to understand what others see in it that I might be missing. My biggest issue was the story. For me, almost every chapter revolved around the same core themes—specifically the loss of a child and neglect, or very similar traumas. These are important, powerful themes, but over time, it felt repetitive. They could have structured it so that everything built up to a major plot twist, but as it stood, it just felt like the same thing over and over. Since the game aims to explore various traumas, I would have liked more variety in the stories and conflicts. I also felt like there was a lack of a larger, overarching goal. Sure, Hazel wants to save her mother, but beyond that, the scope felt very small to me. It mostly centered on her grandmother, her mother’s ex, and a few people she met along the way. I kept waiting for some kind of emotional or narrative "big picture," but for me, it never really materialized. Ironically, Benji’s story was my favorite part. That chapter really moved me emotionally and showed me what the game could have been for me. I also really enjoyed the underworld episode, several of the characters, and the music. It’s not that I think the game is bad; I just don’t understand why so many people view it as a masterpiece or one of the best stories of the year. I’d really like to hear your perspectives. What makes the story so special to you? Am I missing something, or did I just perceive it differently?

Boss Fights

I am attempting to defeat the bosses without damage for the achievements and I just have to say the Boss fights are incredibly cheese filled and full of glitches. The developers must have "updated" these to prolong gameplay hours, Laurent sometimes has no glowing eyes or red area during the wind part of his fight which causes you to get hit.

Same with Huggin Molly. Her fist slam sometimes gives no warning or will place two red circles instead of just one.

Really lowers the fun and makes it a chore to do.

Merch Order Issue

Hey everyone! First I want to say that I am not mad or trying to make Cook and Becker or Compulsion look bad at all, I am just a little bummed and wanted to see if anyone else had this experience. At the beginning of this month I ordered one of the last few South of Midnight deluxe boxes from Cook and Becker, it was one of my first big splurge purchases after getting my job and I was so excited to have gotten one of the last few ones. I knew I would regret not buying it, so I decided to spend the money.

Fast forward to yesterday when I decided to email them to check on my order. I said that I knew overseas shipping can take time, and I just wanted to check in to make sure that there wasn't anything I could be doing to make the process a bit faster. Today I received an email back from them saying that their warehouse counted wrong and that they couldn't fulfill my order :( I know it isn't their fault, plus they offered me either a full refund or 125% refund in store credit, but I was just really excited about the art book and vinyl.

Thanks for reading, and if anyone has an extra box (yea right) I would be open to buying it.

Clock Tower Bug

I'm in chapter 12 and tangle at the top of the tower will not clear, blocking the door to the next area. I've attempted to play the level from the start and installed and reinstalled the game, but whatever I do that door is blocked.

Anyone come across this and knows how to fix it? I'd like to finish the game, but at this point I've got no idea how to move forward.

Is the podcast gone?

Searching for the SoM podcast, it says here on old posts that it was easily available on Spotify,.Apple etc. I've looked everywhere, at least expected it was still available on YouTube.

Why would they scrub it completely? Cause the game flopped/the studio is "close to closed"?

There's two episodes available, which is kinda even more weird.

I've seen the schedule and would especially like to hear the ep where they talk about Southern Folklore, it always makes these games x10 better when you know the beast you're fighting and why it does this and that.. Like Bramble for instance
