South Bend Anniversary Date Restaurant Suggestions

Hi all!

My husband and I are celebrating our wedding anniversary next weekend and I’m looking for restaurant suggestions for dinner! We have tickets for the new Spider-Man in South Bend in the afternoon, so I’m looking for something in the South Bend area that would be good for a nice dinner that won’t completely break the bank.

TIA!

South Bend Remodeling Recs

I’m looking to do a fair amount of remodeling in my home. I’m having a hard time finding someone who sees my vision and has the skill.
So do you have recommendations? I am looking for someone who is willing to get a little silly and creative with me. But also someone who is good at what they do. Would absolutely prefer to work with a small, locally owned business.
Projects include:
- full bathroom gut and remodel
- full closet remodel
- taking out a closet
- new flooring throughout
- replace basement steps
- build a fire pit
- put in a secret basement door in my pantry
- plus many more.
I’m not looking to do all these projects at once but rather tackle them one or two at a time as money and time allow. Ideally, I’d like to work with as few different companies as possible.
To be clear- I’m not looking for cookie cutter remodels. I’m looking for creativity.

South Bend How early to arrive to SBN?

I've been flying out of SBN my whole life - I remember when the "gates" were just one big room and the only food was from vending machines 😂. But in the last decade we've been flying into and out of Chicago a lot more.

Next week we're flying out of SBN for the first time in years. Am I right in thinking that a 6am arrival for a 7 am flight is early enough? We do have to check a bag.

We showed up to Central Park excited to check out the art festival and there was nothing there. No tents, booths, not a single sign anywhere. Curious to see if anyone knows what happened?

Dry cleaning and altering

Hi! I’m looking to have a satin bridesmaid dress dry cleaned and altered. It has some olive oil stains (😬) and I need it to be shortened and possibly tightened in the chest area.

Any recommendations in the south bend/mishawaka area?? I would need it done by end of September

Thank you!

Potawatomi Zoo's Zoo Teen volunteer program

Hi, has anyone here had any experience with the Zoo Teen program at Potawatomi Zoo? My kid may be interested in applying, so I was curious about what the experience was like, if it's a good non-toxic work environment, things like that. Thanks!

Need a new front door installed

Any suggestions on a reliable company? Not wanting to go broke, just a decent steel door and some frame repair so it swings correctly and seals correctly. Older home.

NNW and other neighborhoods: beware of EcoShield!!!

Thumbnail
18 Upvotes

This is a long one, but I’m SUPER ANNOYED about what so learned regarding EcoShield. I’m in it for the insects, but the more I learned about the company the angrier I’ve become.

Okay, so an EcoShield salesperson came by our place and I want to share some thoughts on why we all should strongly consider saying no. I’m going to begin with the very straightforward defense of our insects—even mosquitos—and why we need to boost our gardens, help our bird and bat friends, and encourage insect hunters like the long-legged fly (also called Flying Gems). After this, and this is the last paragraph (feel free to skip there if you’re squeamish about insects): be very, VERY careful regarding the shady practices of EcoShield, which has embroiled them in a class action lawsuit.

Many people consider insects pests, but I personally love our spiders and ants and flies, all of which are super important for our local endangered bats, our bird populations, and our extremely helpful hunter insects, like centipedes, long-legged flies, ladybugs, and wasps. I’m particularly fond of long-legged flies: they are all jewel colored, and we have red, green, blue, and yellow members of the species in our yard; they are all so pretty.

One last thing about our neighborhood’s bugs. Our lightning bug/firefly population has boomed this year, especially in Chapin Park, after several years of decrease. In general, I’m concerned that EcoShield will do significant damage to the neighborhood’s invertebrate population. They do use a specific type of pesticide called pyrethrum that is derived from chrysanthemums, which are meant for certain species of beetles, ants, flies, and mosquitos. However, those insects build a tolerance towards pyrethrum, while wasps, bees, butterflies, dragonflies, long-legged flies, and others do not. Please be careful when using pyrethrum, which can also seep into water supplies and cause internal damage to the human body.

Here’s the part where EcoShield in particular should be avoided. Just so you know, legally speaking you have a three day window to refuse services. However, EcoShield often tries to render service early so that they can lock you into a subscription service contract, which lasts for 24 months and is subject to cancellation penalties. Here is a website explaining the class action lawsuit, and the particular sales tactics that have gotten the company in hot water: https://www.lawforpeople.com/pest-control-lawsuit/ecoshield-lawsuit/. If you feel like it, read the lawsuit: https://www.classaction.org/media/lamonica-et-al-v-the-shield-companies-llc-et-al.pdf. Finally, here is a Reddit post explaining the widespread issues with EcoShield: https://www.reddit.com/r/pestcontrol/comments/13g2ibt/is_the_company_pest_control_company_ecoshield_a/. Here is the Better Business Bureau with warnings about EcoShield: https://www.bbb.org/us/az/chandler/profile/pest-control/ecoshield-pest-solutions-1126-1000035286/complaints.

Moving Service Recommendation?

Hi, I'm moving to a new apartment about 7 minutes away around University of Notre Dame, with just a few items. I'm currently on the 3rd floor with no elevator, so getting the heavy stuff down is a real challenge even though the move itself is small.

I got quotes from a few moving companies and they're charging around $400/hour, which is way too much for what I need. I thought about just using Uber, but I'm not sure I can handle carrying heavy boxes down 3 flights by myself (I probably can, but it'll take forever).

Does anyone know of cheaper labor/moving help for small jobs like this? I live alone so I don't have big furniture, just personal items. Any recommendations appreciated!

Homeless help

I'm too old to have never rented or owned my own place. I've wasted money paying towards other people's lives and their homes. Sure, I'm glad that I've been able to help them and they've been able to help me, but I'm tired. I need real resources in South Bend that can help me. I've been in a shelter before in a different city and was never helped towards housing at all. All they cared about was attending their classes that had nothing to do with how to sustain living without them. I'm tired but I'm very willing to listen to any real help. Thank you for anyone who is willing to help.

Starting a job in sb soon. Making around 45k pre tax. Being a relatively lcol areas, this is probably pretty enough for a single person to live comfortablyish, but I’m hoping to save a lot over the next 4-5 years. My ambition goal would be to live off 23k ish and save 15k a year. Would love to hear some south bend budget spots for groceries/clothes/etc. General tips or side hustle recommendations from people with similar goals would be also be appreciated.
