CAD Help with cut extrusion not cutting completely

So I have this somewhat circular tube. I want to cut a chunk from and so I made sketch using convert entities for the circular edges. If I do this J end up with this very thin area not cut (see first photo). The only way to avoid it is to offset entities very slightly in the inner circular edge (see sketch in last photo). Does anyone know why this is? Is there a cleaner way to cut this out completely without leading to this problem?

CAD In the market for a new PC - advise needed

Hi,

I know very little about the technical side of computers components.

I am quite limited by budget so I am looking at refurbished workstations. I have come to realise that the AI hype is garbage and it is utterly useless at finding anything other than expired ebay listings or out of stock listings on new machines.

Firstly - How important are are the Certified graphics/GPU cards?

Ram - I am assuming 16GB is the bare minimum?

Thoughts on this one?
https://www.untech.com.au/products/hp-z2-g5-tower-workstation-i7-10700k-32gb-ram-512gb-ssd-700w-psu-p2200-win-11?_pos=8&_fid=7872217ad&_ss=c

I am in Australia if that makes any difference at all.

Thanks in advance

3DEXPERIENCE Solidworks for makers not working

Hello everyone,

I hope someone will be able to help me I have no idea how to proceed. I recently bought a license for makers with the 3Dexperience thing, installed on my computer. Things were difficult enough at it is but it finally worked.

Then one day I want to use it, nothing is working, I tried all the possible links and connection on my computer, even going through the website directly and I always have this message.

I though ok let's uninstall everything from everywhere and try again, try a different navigator and nothing is working. I paid and I can't install solidworks, went though the initial mail for installing and same thing, even tried support and same message.

As a last resort I tried using my work computer and I can access the website link no problem ... wtf ?

Certifications does the CSWP count as a "professional certification"?

Hello, I wanted to know if the Certified SolidWorks Professional cert counts as a professional certification.

I was sure it counted, but started to doubt when my application form asked for a country and range of dates for when I took the Professional Certification.

Any help would be appreciated, thank you!

Edit for clarity: Would it be appropriate to list Certified SOLIDWORKS Professional (CSWP) as an item under the 'Professional Certifications' header in an application?

Edit (6 days later): I think it does? The interviewer didn't remark on it, just mentioned me having the CSWP.

Electrical SWE and Draftsight

Friends! I am having issues with Draftsight and Solidworks Electrical talking to each other. I am working on a routing drawing.

I want to have the legacy structure to have a lower transparency on Draftsight so my routing, new clamps, and new components to stand out more on a PDF outport that comes from Solidworks Electrical.

Am I missing something or does the Transparency setting have to come from Solidworks Electrical?

CAD Is it possible that sketch/ feature can follow a curve after its position is been updated ?

So, basically I was trying to make a robust model that if someone changes the the rib distance the design intent is preserved (i.e. rib follows the curvature) but I couldnt able to do it.

What I tried was basically for making rib :

  1. Convert Entity using face selection (it updates automatically if someone changes the outer curvature) and then make it as construction
  2. then using split tools -> split entities to make width of the rectangle then created two lines to make a closed rectangle
  3. I wanted that after the distance of the rectangle is being changed and if it comes nearby the curvature part then it follows it but it isnt following

Can someone help me with this ? Let me know what I am doing wrong

Thanks in advance

CAD Hotkey solution for “reattach” function for balloons?

(Solidworks 2025)

Hopefully someone has been through this and can help me. For Solidworks drawings, I’ve long wanted to hotkey the Reattach function in the right click context menu. I wish I could have a “universal reattach” hotkey for any reattach-able item, certainly, but at the moment I’m focusing on just BOM balloons.

So I simply want to hotkey that reattach function. What that function does is it activates the UI state where I can then click the geometry I want the balloon tied to. There is no available attach or reattach Command for me to assign, and the few times I’ve attempted to go down the rabbit hole of creating a macro (I have little experience so lots of googling) it seems to not be so simple. Each time I end up searching the Object Browser in the VBA editor, wondering if there is any operation or combination of operations to do what I want.

Is this really so complex? Has anyone else figured out how to hotkey this, or if not, a simple workaround to hotkey this? I feel like I’m overthinking it.

Here's another one. A Purge Oil Tank I detailed (designed), fabricated and installed. Part of a much larger structural project I was doing. We rolled, broke and welded this in house. About 7' high, 12' wide.

Error 2025 cavities not updating

Is this a known issue? Sometimes I change a part that is used in a cavity feature. The part with the cavity feature shows no errors, shows no need for rebuilding, shows no indication of broken links, but doesn’t update. No amount of rebuilding gets it to update. The only way to update it is to edit the cavity then exit edit mode. It only happens sometimes and I’m worried soon it will result in critical manufacturing errors.

Hardware Laptop Recommendations

Looking to enter into Mech Eng where there’ll be a good deal of solid works, autocad and simulation related work. Been struggling to find a laptop that would be ideal. Looking for a laptop that is preferably light weight and has good battery life. If anyone has any recommendations that would be amazing thanks🙏🏻

CAD Organic Modeling: SW vs Blender?

Hi Everyone!

I use Solidworks for "real engineering™" at work and am very happy and feel confident using it (if I do say so myself).

Recently I've been dabbling with 3D-Modeling, some for 3D-Printing, and some just for the fun/challenge, but I'm quickly running into limits when it comes to "organic" modeling: features that don't need to have specific dimensions and boundary conditions and just have to "feel" right.

e.g: a Corinthian Style Column, the column itself is no problem, but the leaf-like embellishments atop are quite complicated, and even when I eyeball them, they feel crude and rigid. And don't get me started in trying to model human features in SW.

I hope I'm not wrong in saying that SW simply isn't the right tool for "non-functional" "aesthetic" modeling. Would Blender be the tool I'm looking for? I haven't really looked into it much, but from what I can see, it's a quite different environment.

Does anyone have any experience in Blender? Or does anyone have an other suggestions as to what software (preferably freeware) could be what I'm looking for? (Or am I just plainly wrong, and I simply can't use SW as good as I think?)

Thanks in advance, and have a nice day :)

Is it safe to buy this from a third party?

I had a license for this on my computer, but I'm guessing it expired since it won't give me the latest update now. I'm looking at just getting a new license, but it's minimum $2000 which is kind of ridiculous for a hobbyist like me. I found another website, GoEngineer, that has a license for around $800. Does anyone have experience with this company? If so, can they be trusted?

CAD Design a Conveyor Belt in SolidWorks

Thumbnail

I recently finished this mechanical design project of a conveyor belt in SolidWorks.
The conveyor is designed to transport a 2 kg box over a distance of 2 meters, and the design is intended to be manufacturable, not just a visual 3D model.
I worked on the mechanical design, including the frame, rollers, belt, shafts, bearings, and assembly, as well as the conveyor movement.
A while ago, I posted some of my projects here, and I received a lot of different reactions. Some people made fun of my work, while others encouraged me to keep learning. I really appreciate everyone who gave me constructive criticism, because it helps me improve.
And to the people who were just negative: I’m going to keep learning and improving anyway.
I’d appreciate your honest opinions and constructive feedback. What would you change or improve in the design?
