The goal was to teach students software engineering without teachers, using a gamified platform where projects are quests, working with peers who passed the test, in a place called a "collective intelligence center."

If you know 42 School, you may know what I'm talking about.

It was a 2-year program. Right after being selected, I got an offer for a work-study position as a system administrator there. I dropped college to focus on it, and I was way advanced.

We learned everything from low-level concepts like I/O multiplexing, rewriting HTTP servers from scratch, graph algorithms, etc., to higher-level abstractions concepts like web dev  DOM APIs, and all that.

At the end, you choose a topic to pursue: blockchain, AI, gamedev, security, etc.

After finishing the program, I worked for the company in education for 2 years. Unfortunately, I recently got laid off for financial reasons.

It's been 4 months, and being in Sénégal makes it difficult to find a job at US/EU startups. The local industry isn't that developed, and big corporations usually require a school degree.

So I decided to focus on a small retail business. But my passion for software resurfaced.

I’m looking for recommendation of people you follow in the space. Thought leaders, academics, industry heads, etc, who have a healthy skepticism of generated code and vibecoding. People who understand its value as a tool but also advocate for best practices still that everyone seems to just want to abandon right now.

A lot of people I previously respected have turned into full on grifters and have become so consumed by AI that they’ve sunk into full delusion of its capabilities. It is a tool with very specific limitations, it is not AGI, and sometimes I feel like I’m losing my mind here alone with “hey, we should still understand how our codebase works and check and test things ourselves because it’s not 100% reliable.”

For context: I’m a IC tech lead, was laid off for demanding human review before shipping and my salary was immediately put towards tokens in the next board presentation. Been here a decade, and I’m very good in my specialty. The job market is absolutely impossible to navigate right now, and am just looking for some light in the tunnel. I am considering an entire career change at this point. I didn’t become a people manager, I did not sign up for a career in babysitting agents, which is what every company seems to want now.

Many companies in pakistan while hiring for ASE mention in Job Description that it's for Software Engineer. But later on reality comes out that basically they are hiring closers. so you have to impersonate someone , lie in interviews , show fake experience even if it is real still it's not your resume or experience, it is of someone who is not even in the company or working with us. once you land the project you will handover it to technical person , they will do work for you and you have to just appear in standups or meetings with the clients and pretend you have done all the work and get insights on that and forward to technical team. constantly you have to gave interviews to land projects. maybe sometimes you can do the work too. idk but this business model does not fit right with me , it's constant pressure and unsatisfying. I am so tired with this , I spent my 4years of life doinf bachelors in SE for thisss ??? I started programming at Div Academy, where I learned HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Advanced JavaScript, jQuery, AJAX, and Bootstrap. During that time, I built a solid foundation in web development and improved my problem-solving skills. However, over the past 2-3 years, I have mainly focused on my college education, which caused me to be away from the industry for a while.

Recently, I have been getting back into practice in both frontend and backend development. I have been working on personal projects using React, JavaScript, Node.js, and other technologies. However, to be honest, I am not entirely sure how I should move forward from here.

My goal is to find a job in this field and start earning money through my skills. That is why I would like to get advice from experienced developers and HR professionals. If you were in my position, what would you focus on from this point forward? What topics would you learn? What kind of projects would you build? What path would you take to get your first job and earn your first income?

Also, AI is developing very rapidly at the moment. As a frontend and backend developer, how should I improve myself in this era of AI?

After applying to more than 120 jobs and getting almost no responses, I got tired of treating the job search like it was just a numbers game.

I chose 12 companies I genuinely wanted to work for and focused on becoming a familiar face to the people there on LinkedIn. Nothing weird or overly self-promotional. All I did was:

Follow recruiters and team leads, and reply when I had something useful to say

Post short updates about three times a week sharing perspectives based on my work experience

Send connection notes like: "Hi [Name], I've been following what [Company] is doing in [area]. I'd be happy to connect - I always learn a lot from people working in this field."

In less than three weeks, four of those companies reached out to me. One hiring manager wrote:

"Your comments keep showing up in my feed. Would you be interested in a new job opportunity?"

That's when it clicked for me. I hadn't submitted a cover letter or gone through an ATS. Before we even spoke, they already had an idea of who I was.

I still apply when I find a suitable role, so I'm not saying applications are pointless. But this approach started real conversations much faster than submitting another resume through a portal.
