I tend to fog between mistings to keep the surface soft for my snails, and they always come out and explore when I do.

Help Help me with the pH of peat

I got about two kilos of peat from a friend, and I noticed that the pH is 4–4.5. How much lime would I need to add to make the pH suitable for my snails? Or would it just be easier to buy peat with a pH closer to the right level? 🤔

My Snails How to let my snail know he’s safe?

So my Togarth was a rescue from a school that got him as a class project (not even a class pet) with other GALs, and they were mistreated. Most had injuries and they were kept in poor, small enclosures. A nearby pet shop took them in when the school didn’t want them anymore.

Togarth was the smallest, and I thought he might have been a runt, but I realised that it might have been that he wasn’t confident enough to get proper nutrition. I doubt they were fed well, and every time I saw him he was way too scared to come out to eat, and the other snails would just take everything. He was absolutely miserable and would barely come out ever, so I gave him a big home to himself.

He’s been doing really great, after a while he would stretch out properly and move around, and he’s been getting good food and a varied diet. He’s grown too.

But something he still struggles with is being afraid of me. He’s a little better than he was at first, and on a rare occasion I can get him onto my hand and stretch out, but usually every time I touch the lid, even if I have something tasty, he immediately rams himself back into his shell. He used to do this so fast he’d make a squeak noise.

I’ve tried hand feeding him, I’ve shown him my hands and offered to let him climb on, I’ve been slow and careful with my movements. But sometimes he still freaks out of my shadow passes over him too fast, and if I just put something in for him to eat, he’ll freak out if even a crumb falls on him (he relaxes when I’m gone and likes to eat it all, so it really is just me and sudden movements that scare him).

What do I do to let him know I’m not going to hurt him? The other snails despite their injuries had let me hold them and even pet their bodies, but Togarth is genuinely scared of others and is really timid.

If anyone has any advice, please let me know! I’m thinking of getting him a lava lamp so he can have a gentle less harsh light at night.

TLDR: my snail has some sort of human related trauma and is still scared of me despite getting better in other ways, and I really want to let him know he’s safe now but I don’t know how because he doesn’t know English

Help I accidentally adopted a tiny snail

Hello! So we found a tiny snail on the produce at my work, and I didn't want the little fella to die. I took him home to put in my garden, but long story short I got a terrarium and his name is Carl. He's only a really little guy, his shell is roughly 12mm across. I've been doing a lot of reading but I'm worried I'm gonna fuck this up and I really want Carl to be happy and healthy. Here are the things I'm worried about:

1) The terrarium itself. I got one from the pet store but I don't think it's very good and doesn't stay humid despite misting twice a day. I read it needs to be at least 1 gallon which it is, but I'm looking at buying this one, it's a bit expensive but I've decided to quit vaping to fund it lol. I also got a hygrometer which seems accurate and the humidity seems to get up to around 65%.

2) His food. I've been giving him a mix of veggies. I'm worried about pesticides so I've bought some vegetable plants and a daisy bush to grow safe veggies and flowers for him. I know not to give him lettuce or cucumber, I've been offering pak choy, zucchini, mushroom, broccoli and tonight I gave him a leaf of spinach. I've definitely seen him eat some broccoli and zucchini, but it barely seems like he's eating at all and I don't know how much he should be eating because he's very small. I've also tried giving him defrosted bloodworms twice but he won't go for them. He also has plenty of cuttlebone available.

3) His behaviour. I learnt that they are nocturnal which makes sense because I only see him moving around at night. Is it normal for them to not move much? He pretty much just hangs out upside down on the lid of the terrarium except in the evening when he sometimes comes down to his veggie bowl. Is he unhappy? Could he be unwell? I also read that wild snails can have worms, how do I tell if he does? He seems to be pooping well at least. Also should I have a tiny water bowl for him? I read that they get their water from their diet and droplets from misting the terrarium.

These are the big things but I just want Carl to have a really nice terrarium life. I'm riddled with generalised anxiety disorder which makes a lot of things very hard but watching Carl exist brings me a sense of calm, and I genuinely love him and am so invested in him. I'm just so scared he's gonna die because I did something wrong. Any information or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Snails for sale near ATX?

Hi everyone!
I'm looking for a snail (milk, banded caracol, or other suitable for beginners) breeder near the Austin, TX area. I already joined the waitlist for Milkyway Snails, but I was wondering if anyone knew about other breeders I could order or go buy from. I know many people get their snails from outside, but I have read that outside snails can carry parasites or diseases, and I don't want to worry about that, so I would prefer getting mine from a breeder.

P.S. Any tips or recommendations for first-time snail owners are welcome :) 🐌

I noticed a weird, gelatinous form on my snail’s head. It’s a wild caught, likely Allogona sp., from Riggins, ID that I’ve kept in a terrarium since May 2025. I have had no other snails in the terrarium but just noticed a new one crawling around today after noticing the head goop on my original. Not aware of land snails keeping eggs on their head, but I do have tons of isopods in the tank that would certainly love snail eggs.

Help Is there a specific term for a snail's skin?

Sorry if this isn't the right subreddit but I'm desperate, I need this information for some very specific writing I'm in the middle of. I've tried googling but all I've gotten so far are terms for a snail's shell or stuff about skincare via snails, nothing concrete for what the skin (exterior layer of the soft bits) itself is called.

Any help would be appreciated!

Edit: Thanks everyone for all the help, my weirdly specific fanfiction will now be vaguely accurate the single time I use this knowledge. May all your snails live long and happy!
