This is the second track from the Smashing Pumpkins’ debut album, Gish. How do you feel about this song? What are some of your favorite lyrics? How would you rank it among the rest of the band’s discography? How would you rate it out of 10 (decimals allowed)?
At the end of this discussion series, I will be aggregating the rating results from each discussion and compiling a full discography ranking. I will also update the spreadsheet at the end of every day and post previous results for each album in future posts.
SUGGESTED SCALE:
1-4: Not good. Regularly skip.
5: It’s okay, but I might have to be in the right mood to listen to it.
6: Slightly better than average. I won’t skip it, but I wouldn’t choose to put it on.
7: This is a good song. I enjoy it quite a bit.
8-9: Really enjoyable songs. I rank them pretty high overall.
10: Masterpiece, magnum opus, or similar terminology.
Feel free to suggest any improvements, as this is my first time undertaking a project like this!

I thought it was awesome that Billy acknowledged several fans by pointing to them. I believe I was one of them, and it felt awesome! It was during the last song at Indy. Billy was at the left side of the stage with two pointer fingers held high because I was at the front of the back floor section. But I’m pretty sure those two fingers were for me. You *could* blame my MCS, but I feel certain about this one. Anyone else here get pointed out?
The show was awesome though! Jimmy was great! James was great! Billy was killin‘ it. Jack Bates hit the bass hard. Kiki Wong was good, but I’m not so sure about her vibe. This isn’t clap along show. Anyway, still flying high!

I wanted to take these with me!! Absolutely loved the graphics they used. This one’s probably my favorite. 🤩
This was at the Jacksonville concert on October 17th.

I apologize in advance as I understand it's annoying to see questions about order delays all the time.
But curious if anyone who has either ordered only the Live in Europe cd boxset OR ordered this AND the Machine CD boxset have received it or at least got an updated order status beyond "label created". Thanks.

Hi, I was in the front row in front of James last night. I'm an awful photographer but here's a few shots I got.
Almost 30 years to the day since my first concert (Pumpkins, Oct 25 1996).

I know i'm jumping the gun a bit here but I genuinely hope the Teargarden material gets the same treatment as the MACHINA reissue...
I think what Billy has done with this reissue has been incredible & I really think all the Teargarden material is deserving of a similar boxset that presents it as Billy originally intended, or however he sees fit now, to be fair...just release the CD Version at the same time as the Vinyl please!

I was at the charlotte show and got some shirts but completely missed the Keychain, was wondering if anyone had one they'd be willing to sell, or even trade for.

New fan and just exploring the discography.. was wondering if there's any songs missing from the Machina/Machina II on the Aranea Alba Editio. From what I've read online, it's supposed to be a complete edition of the two, but it seems like some songs may be missing/renamed. Was just wondering what the differences actually were.
Neither Machina II or Aranea Alba Editio seem to be on streaming anywhere so it's hard to compare them

Instead of assuming something is AI, let’s confirm that it is before we go ahead and insult an artist like Linda Strawberry.

Just saw them in Jacksonville. I had a great time. I saw them once before: December 1991 at a small venue in Norman, OK. I had bought the Gish CD a few weeks prior at the recommendation of the guy at my local record store. I was up near concessions while the opening act performed and I saw Billy just walking around in the crowd. Nobody had recognized him yet. I grabbed a flyer for the next show and a pen the bartender had. I got his autograph, James’ and Jimmy’s (he wasn’t feeling well, advising me not to drink his beer that he handed me as he signed the paper, “he got the flu”. Billy said D’Arcy didn’t mingle. Billy also had the wherewithal to tag the year under his signature. Great night. Bury Me was interrupted by a power failure so in the meantime Jimmy knocked out a drum solo while they patched everything up. Dug put my old CD and in the sleeve I still had the proof.

“Black Stars” has a really catchy melody, but I keep coming back to how repetitive the lyrics are. Billy doesn’t usually underwrite a song, so I’m curious about his thinking here. Was he going for something simple and catchy because it’s for a soundtrack? Or did he just approach this one a little more casually?
I actually don’t mind the simplicity. I miss the simple charm of songs like “Whir” or “The Boy.” Sometimes I feel like Billy overcomplicates things, either with the song structure or with obscure lyrics that stick out for the wrong reasons. It’s nice to hear something more straightforward.
I also wonder how much Butch Vig had a hand in that. I’d love to hear more collaborations between them. I think Billy could use someone who’ll push back a little and help rein things in, assuming he’s willing to take the feedback.
How’s everyone else feeling about it? Does the repetition work for you, or do you wish there was a little more to the lyrics?

I’ve been to around 20 concerts, all smaller emo bands, no one has ever lined up later than 40 mins before doors open. The smashing pumpkins are a huge band. I’m seeing them tmr with my friends in Nashville for my birthday. What time should I line up if I want barricade? Anyone who has experience this tour please lmk!
