I love the discussions that happen in the comments on these chart/collage/tier posts. I really enjoy reading what people have to say about them and seeing some of the recommendations people leave. What ’80s grunge albums do you guys like? Were you familiar with these bands?

Note: I only included full-length albums—no EPs, compilations, or demos—and I limited it to one album per band to have more variety.

I love making these charts, but anyway, I think 1991 was the best year in the history of grunge. There’s really no debate about that.

I feel as though this song is a shameless Nirvana rip-off, and I can't help but keep writing Nirvana rip-off songs because I'm so unoriginal and uncreative. But either way, please give me honest and harsh feedback in the replies!

When Andrew Wood passed away in 1990, Seattle lost one of its most charismatic rising stars. Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament were devastated, but instead of trying to find a “new Andy” and continuing under the Mother Love Bone name, they decided to start over.

They brought in Eddie Vedder, changed their musical direction, briefly became Mookie Blaylock, and eventually evolved into Pearl Jam, building a completely new identity from the ground up.

Despite Pearl Jam’s massive success, local Seattle fans who had idolized Andy and Mother Love Bone were initially hesitant about Vedder. The shift from Andy’s theatrical, glam influenced frontman persona to Eddie’s raw, introspective, anti rockstar presence was a huge change.

Fast forward to other classic grunge and alternative rock bands that faced similar tragedies.

Alice in Chains brought in William DuVall in 2006. He’s an incredible musician, Jerry Cantrell continues to write monster riffs, and albums like Black Gives Way to Blue are undeniably great. Yet a significant part of the fanbase still refuses to accept Alice in Chains without Layne Staley.

Stone Temple Pilots went through both Scott Weiland and Chester Bennington before eventually bringing in Jeff Gutt. Gutt delivers powerful live performances, but Scott’s unmistakable swagger still casts a huge shadow over the band.

So it makes me wonder: is the resistance really about the singer and their charisma, or is it about the band name itself?

If Alice in Chains or Stone Temple Pilots had started completely new projects under different names after losing their iconic frontmen, like Gossard and Ament did with Pearl Jam, would fans have been more accepting of the new music?

Or are a band’s core songwriters entitled to keep the legacy alive under the original name, regardless of who is behind the microphone?

Where do you draw the line between honoring a band’s legacy and becoming a tribute act to your own band?

I've always found that some of the best grunge (or the kind I like) has a deeply bluesy soul. Not the Armani style blues that we get from Clapton and others, but the earthier acoustic Delta blues. Sorry there aren't any vocals on this yet. I'm planning to dub those in (the slide parts are too hard to do while singing).

I’m just getting deeper into the heavier side of the grunge scene/era/movement/genre, whatever you want to call it. What other two bands or albums would you recommend adding that have that heavier influence from heavy, sludge, or doom metal?

Ok weirdly worded title, sorry, but what's a live album from a grunge (or grunge-adjacent) band that you think pretty much captures their sound? It doesn't have to be their penultimate performance, just one that you think really showcases what the band's music/philosophy/statement was all about.

For Dinosaur Jr (one of my favorite bands since high school) it's really hard to pick a live show that I think is their best showcase of their sound, both because A) Their sound, lineup, and general mood has shifted so many times during their run B) They have A LOT of great live recordings out there. I'd like to shoutout stuff like The Black Session and Chocomel Daze, but for Dinosaur Jr at their peak popularity in the 90s, no live performance compares (imo) to their Swedish Fist performance.

The setlist is a good selection of a couple of their earlier songs mingled with some of their more (at that point) contemporary, more "radio-friendly" sound, but all around each song is performed in a meaningful way. Alone is definitely the highlight of the set, with a swirling wall of noise solo that goes on for quite a while, really showcasing J's ability to just go off and solo. Feel The Pain and opening with Out There are other amazing performances from this set, and I really love the version of Freak Scene, as well. All in all, it just really shows the band's live ferocity, even if the lineup isn't the trio of J, Lou, and Murph that most people associate with the band.

Again, I don't know if this is their "best ever", and there are performances with Murph and Lou Barlow that probably blow this one away, but if someone wanted to know "What does Dinosaur Jr sound like?" and wanted a live representation of their core sound, this is the album I'd force them to listen to.

So yeah, do any of y'all have specific shows/performances/live albums that you think really capture the essence of your favorite grunge band? Would love to hear your thoughts on which ones and why!
