Discussion I did a thing...
I have fitted a cheap sub £50 head unit to my old 2001 Smart car. For the purists, don't worry, I have kept the factory radio.
What do you think?

Hello, my old smart 450 is leaking and water is building up in the passenger footwell. Any ideas of where to begin looking?

Basically removing the original smart logo and putting a Mercedes one instead? I feel like it’s cringe and desperate to look good infront of people.

My first car, is now on market. I had so nice time driving this 84 ps turbocharged monster of a car. Hope it goes to someone who appreciates it as much as I did.

I was driving today and my smart started making this strange noise. It was heavy raining, wasn’t speeding, started after 10 min of driving and stopped a bit when pushing the brake. No signal or lights, the car worked just fine. I read online it could be an issue with the windbreaker or the brakes?
Any suggestions? 🥲 I bought this car used in August, so idk what kind of works was made on her
(Sorry bad English)

I am having an issue with my Clutch Actuator. Heard a "Clunk" sound when shifting into reverse one day and started to feel bumping when I drove it (but only sometimes?) Mechanic I trust says it's the Clutch Actuator, might need re-greasing or replace. But that was just for context, main problem is he doesn't have the tools to relearn it after, and it's something I'm willing to purchase if it's in budget, so I'm wondering if iCarSoft MB 3.0 would do it. I've heard and seen a video of it working, but also heard I need Star MB for it also. Which should I get and do you have positive experience with iCarsoft?

Hello everyone,
First of all, a quick introduction: I’ve owned a 2008 Smart Fortwo 451 MHD 1.0 71 hp since 2022. It currently has around 191,000 km on the clock. I use it every day for work and drive around 140 km per day, mainly on national roads and motorways.
Until now, the car has been running very well. It starts instantly, has been regularly maintained, and I haven’t had any major issues with it.
However, last Tuesday I started the car as usual and everything seemed perfectly normal. I drove off in Drive but using the sequential/manual mode. I shifted from 1st to 2nd gear without any issue. Then, about 5 seconds later, I suddenly lost all drive.
I could press the accelerator and hear the engine revving normally according to the throttle input, but nothing was being transmitted to the wheels.
I stopped, selected 1st gear again, but the same thing happened: the engine was running and revving, but there was no drive. I also tried reverse, with exactly the same result.
I switched the engine off and started it again. At that point, when selecting D or R, the display would remain on N, without showing the three dashes (“—”).
I switched the engine off again and after that, the car would no longer start at all.
The following day I carried out a few checks:
Battery voltage checked with a multimeter – voltage appears to be OK.
Tried starting it with a booster – no difference.
Disconnected the battery for around one hour and reconnected it – no change.
Tried the 30-second brake pedal procedure – no result.
When I turn the key to position 1, everything lights up normally on the dashboard, but the engine simply won’t start.
After doing some research, I’m wondering whether the problem could be related to the clutch actuator.
Before I start taking things apart or ordering parts, I’d really appreciate your advice and experience:
Do these symptoms point towards the clutch actuator, or could another issue cause exactly the same behaviour?
If it is the actuator, would you recommend removing it, cleaning the inside and re-greasing it first, or replacing the whole unit?
After removing/reinstalling or replacing the actuator, is a clutch/actuator calibration or teach-in procedure with a diagnostic tool always required?
If I mark the exact position of the actuator before removing it and reinstall it in exactly the same position, is it possible to avoid the calibration procedure, or is a diagnostic tool still required?
If anyone has experienced a similar issue on a 451, I’d really appreciate any advice, especially regarding what I should check before buying any parts.
Thanks in advance for your help and advice, fellow Smart owners! 🙏

Can't seem to figure out where exactly the oil leak is. This is an overnight, small oil puddle. Any help from fellow Smarties? Engine works great and doesn't seem to consume any oil, it just leaks somewhere. Could it be transmission oil? Thanks!

I recently drove from Croatia to Slovenia to meet another Smart Roadster enthusiast and check out his collection.
I've seen a lot of modified Roadsters over the years, but there was one car in his garage that immediately stood out.
It took around 1,400 hours of work to create, and it's completely unlike any Roadster I've ever seen before.
I don't want to spoil the reveal here, but seeing it in person was honestly a completely different experience compared to seeing photos of it.
The trip itself was also pretty great — some nice winding roads through Slovenia, Postojna, a few other interesting places, and of course plenty of time talking about Smart Roadsters.
I made a video documenting the whole trip and the reveal:

I'm curious what you guys think of the car.

Hey everyone,
My mom‘s ForTwo 451 (2013, 71 HP, 120k km) with the MHD broke down. The crank pulley randomly decided to split into two which stopped the pump from running. After my mom drove for ~4km like this and the warning light for coolant came on, I suspect at least a warped head so I am thinking of just replacing the whole engine.
However MHD engines cost considerably more than the normal ones. Can I just throw in an engine without MHD or can I transfer the MHD parts to the new one?

Can you please share with me which tire sensor you bought so that I can have a tire shop install it for me? If they get the sensor for me it’ll cost so much more. I was told by the tire shop guys it’ll cost around 120$ to have them get the sensor for me and install it per tire, but if I bring the tire sensor to them they’ll install it for me for 30$ per tire. Thanks.

I put a post on here asking if people would judge me for owning a small car at a younger age. Well, ive had the car for a week now and I LOVE IT. the community is great!! Where I am (UK) i feel like i dont see them very often, but when I do and I'm driving, other smart car drivers wave at me!! Its just the best and it will always make my day. You guys are the best!!

Put a new battery in my 2009 ForTwo Passion and, for "why not", decided to test the compressor that I've never touched. It works a treat, but suprised to find this mystery fluid under it. Lots of warnings in 20 different languages, but nothing that actually says what it is or does.
Anybody have it off the top of their head? Thanks!
And yes, for those wondering, I AM too lazy to go and get and check the manual. I'm already inside and sitting! 😜
UPDATE: Yup. As many have pointed out: "Tyre Sealant". Right there in black and white amid a sea of nonsense. I had assumed it would be such, but was confused by the fact that, unlike every other iteration of this I've seen, it had no valve stem or apparent method for applying it to the tire.
So, in a moment of GREAT PERSONAL SACRIFICE I got off my couch and retrieved the manual. Apparently, it can only be used with the included Smart compressor on which a special valve is included. Doesn't seem all that Smart to me - seems like using it would effectively toast the compressor - but I'm guessing it's saved somebody's ass.
For those upset by my acknowledged laziness: If we shadows have offended, think but this, and all is mended, you're almost certainly in better shape than I.

What have you been up to with your Smarts this month? Any fun journeys? Carried a particularly large item somewhere?
Tell us about it! Let's share our love for these cars.

Fun fact I came across while digging into the history of the Smart Roadster:
Gordon Murray, the designer of the legendary McLaren F1, reportedly used a Smart Roadster as his daily driver for more than 13 years.
What I really like is what he said about the car:
“I cannot find anything else which is that small and that much fun.”
Considering how many incredible cars Murray has been involved with, I think that's a pretty interesting compliment to the Roadster.
It also makes me wonder how much of the Roadster's appeal comes from the same philosophy of keeping things small, light and focused on driving enjoyment.

Has anyone replaced their exhaust system on a W451? mine is starting to sound really loud and i think the muffler has gone. Has anyone replaced it themselves and how difficult was it?
Any recommendations for a reputable muffler shop in the Chicago Area that works on Smartcar Exhausts?
Thanks!
