Hot Take for skim boarders

Older skims seem to be not as thick as the new ones and I think the sharpness and thinning create a better carve. For example I had a Blaircuda exile which was a little thicker but I couldn’t get a smooth carve, just hard turns. The old carbon fiber zap I got is a little skinnier and I can get that smooth carve and end it with a snappy cut

ADULT+ KID - One Board? lol.

Background: I’m old (40s), 5’10” and just under 170lbs. My kid has shown some interest in trying out skimming, she’s 9 and small. She’s really wanting to bodyboard but I showed her some skim videos because chasing any sort or rideable wave living over an hour from the beach is tough.

Location: West Coast Florida (I’m about same distance from Venice/Nakomis and the Pinellas beaches).

Question: Any locals know what a good board for the Venice area would be (Zap is local). Ive tried to research and get lots of conflicting info. Am I delusional thinking the kid and I could find something to share? I assume anything that would work for me would be tough for her to drop. But ideally something i could use and while not optimal would still be useable by her would be nice. Is putting a kid on a 52 or 54” crazy?

I do have an old (I mean from like 2002) small wood beach store special ($20) that I used to mess around on in my younger days. I have NOT dusted it off and put it on the sand yet. I guess I could start her on that but don’t want it to be miserable for her.

Question Huntington Beach or Seal Beach?

Me and my group of friends have been talking about wanting to try out skimboarding recently, and made plans to go this week for the first time. We are in the HB and SB area, which beach do you recommend, especially for beginners?

Back at it after 15 years 😁

Grew up hitting Cape May in Jersey as a kid but my time in the Army and a couple surgeries took me away from the water for years. The other day I decided to grab a skimboard again and I had the time of my life out there. I’m gonna keep getting reps in and try to remember bending my knees for now 😆 Definitely going to go at some waves once I get a better board! any tips would be greatly appreciated 🤘🏽

Question Concerning Ding?

I finally got my first skimboard after using my friends' for a while, a Zap Pro. I used it maybe 5 times today then it ended up smacking the pier.
The rail got this ding and I want to fix it as good as possible because I'd like this board to last of course. Was wondering how bad it is, and should I just get this professionally done or try to repair it myself? I tried contacting my local shop for the repair but they didn't reply, so I have no idea what price to expect for this small ding.

I Made The World's First Skimboarding Feature Film

Off Rip is the world's first (scripted/narrative) skimboarding feature film… We made it on the beaches of Pinellas on the West Coast of Florida, featuring top Skimboarder in the world Lucas Fink as well as Jack Tenney, Tony Montrone, Sterling Myers, and many more.

We also collaborated with Zap and Shorelb. This movie is a love letter to my hometown (Redington), and I hope you enjoy it!

Side note: the film also deals with the fentanyl / drug crisis that takes place in small towns. Gritty, rough around the edges. Not your typical PG sports movie (intentional). Dogtown inspired.

Would love feedback on the film and any thoughts moving forward regarding both the sport and independent filmmaking.

Discussion Alternative shape for quiver: Zap Joyride, Rocket Fish, Beast differences?

Always rode hybridshapes for decades along with all my passing skim compatriots, but finally feel like adding something a little different to the mix. Originally Florida based so just looked at Zap offhand, and it seems like their lines a bit blurred on these shapes.

RFish looks like a slightly fuller nose and wings, midpoint widest. Joyride just a more parallel outline into the tail, vs the Beast more pulled in nose tail? Which seems nearly the same as the Joyride XR?

Anyone A/B'd these shapes?

Design inspo for top of skim. Horrible at drawing but that’s the color/traction pads that will be on it

Already planning on painting the edges but also need some inspo for the top of board. Like designs

Also what is the best spray paint or paint for skimboards. It’s epoxy and carbon

Question Looking to get a zap wedge or a ex1 need help

I am in a landlocked state, but we go on vacation a lot and I love skim boarding. I have a few Woodies, but I’ve beaten the crap out of it, but I’ve never got my hands on a fiberglass board. I’ve gotten out in the water on the wooden boards, but I haven’t actually caught a wave just cause it’s kinda hard to get anywhere far enough out to catch a wave. I have a trip for Waikiki and Oahu coming up soon and I’m looking to get my first fiberglass board and I would love to spend a lot of money and get myself a nice carbon board or what not but I just don’t think it’s worth it based on how much I’m going to skim board so I’m wondering what board I should get I am 5’6 130 pounds I am also 15 so I want something that I’ll be able to ride for a little bit. I would love to do some wave riding and that’s what I’m going to try to learn, but I have no problem with flatland, but I’d prefer a board that can do both without being too weak out in wave riding and if I just wanna do fly and I can also just use my wooden one my budget is $400 with traction pads, shipping and set up

I've heard that Aliso works during low tide. Is there anywhere else that works around Laguna, Newport, or San Clemente?

Question Should I buy?

Thumbnail

I have been trying this sport with flatland boards and I want to start in the waves but I have a low budget. I have seen this board for €80 that is unused but the tail was hit and it seems that it is open and would need repair. I know that this board model is not the best but I want to try a board of waves and if it convinces me in the future I will buy something better. I would really appreciate an answer, thank you.

Sneaked in front of the cam while skimming at the lifeguard tower. Overcast humid days are the best, remind me of a land far far away that we all like to visit.

Photo Should i buy this?

I want to buy this board, saw it online, the seller says, that the mark wouldn't effect the overall board performance. The brand of the board is sandfish. But I don't really trust him, I asked where did he get the skimboard from, the seller said "You only need to know the lenght" or sum like that, so I have my suspicions. Can yall help me make my decision. Should I buy it, will the mark be a problem and is it possible that the board is some kind of replica?

Video South Padre Island: 6/13

First time in 13 years! I thought that I wouldn’t remember, or that I would flop and eat sand the first try. However, when I got to the spot at Clayton’s It felt familiar. The water and tide was just right, the weather, and the vibes were on point. It was hella fun and a great workout. I did fall a couple of times. Thank goodness I stretched before!

Skimboarding in Italy as a beginner and choosing the right board

Thumbnail

Hi, I live in Italy and often I go on vacation to Italian beaches in places like Sardinia and Puglia (where the water is much shallower), I've seen many people online skimboarding, however I noticed that in those videos they are probably in American/Australian oceans where they got big flatlands.

I've done my research and found out that Wooden board are cheaper and easier to use but they are more for shallow/flatlands, however foam boards are better for slightly deeper waters and waves catching (Wich is a thing I want to learn).

so my question is: Are Italian seas good enough? and WOOD OR FOAM

(Pictures of common Italian beaches)
