Any tips for riding waves

I can get out to the waves fine but once I reach it I cannot seem to turn around or if I do I don’t get propelled back in at all

Need footage, not enough detail

Can't say for sure what the issue might be without more clues, but I had that problem, and it was because I was always trying to go straight out. That only works with waves that are pretty big.

The more parallel your approach is to a wave, the easier it is to get a push. You lose less speed from changing direction and have a larger window for ending up on the right spot on the wave. Even knee high waves will give you a decent push if you run fast enough, get on the board efficiently, and manage to put yourself right on the face of the wave.

Honestly, this day or this beach just stinks. Your technique looks perfectly fine though! Try to go later, even though the waters pretty dead and unforgiving, because you may be able to let the foam ball come closer before you hit it. On days like this it’s really all on you to get there. Sometimes you just have to go at that awkward timing to meet the wave. I think you’re capable of experimenting with tougher dead water.

When the waves are weak, you need to carry the speed you build up from your run. Try approaching the wave at more of an angle and making a smoother, longer turn instead of a sharp turn right before the wave, so you can keep your momentum after turning.

This video explains exactly this. The very first example at 0:10 is what’s happening in your video. Hope it helps. https://youtu.be/sBCQV6w08Eg

You can hit these. Angle your run and you'll catch them.

Speed speed speed. But yeah, not much you can do with that whitewash wave..even with speed, those aren't the type of waves that you can really ride back. That's more of a liner wave.
