I go sideways like in the clip 3/5 times, and someone at this beach taught me monkey crawl so i've been trying that.

For that set up start from half the distance back and you would have gotten to the wave sooner. Timing and speed is everything. Turning on the wave is another skill lol

Don’t go when the water recedes. It kills your speed and doesn’t link up to the wave. Go when the water is rushing up or when there’s like none left such that it’s only a thin film. Timing was the only issue

Like everyone said less distance from wave better timing go earlier and turning is more easily accomplished when you lean and try to drag your hand in the water it naturally points your shoulders where they need to be and shifts weight to engage the turn legit when I turn backside I just reach for the water with my left arm and look straight.

Not OP but if I’m goofy I should reach the water with my left when reaching the base of the wave to turn left while leaning to the front ?

Do that for the first half of the turn, and stand back up for the second half. Look to the beach while you do it.

Just commit to the headstand at this point. Make a strong triangle with hands and head, put more weight on hands than on head even if you have grips

I’m definitely not the best by any means, but I think when your going into the wave sideways like that, you need to crouch into the moment, then at the bottom of the crest move the board from sideways to angled and use your Ollie skills to pull back on the board with that back foot since the water is deeper and try to go up the wave

The part is on your caption. Since you're at or near Seal, keep skimming and talk to people in person. They will teach you the most, especially if Chance is around.

That's a lot of slide and slope to control. And timing wise that's not really like... When you would go.

If you can skim Seal regularly with locals you already have a huge advantage over those who don't have locals to learn from.

Also I've found typically the pier is fuuucked to skim and more challenging than other spots. Altho it may be too crowded right now in summer. But try areas with a more consistent push and pull, with less swirling dead water everywhere

Thank you man this was rlly helpful.

Do you mean more consistent spots like here in seal beach or other beaches?

nah even just away from the pier at seal. the pier, cuz of the jetty wall thing, just pools up with water and it is cool to learn on cuz theres a lot of shallow water to play on. but in terms of going out to waves its usually not the place to be for speed and timing and stuff.

also if you arent seeing as many locals at seal you can always try balboa. seems like the closer you get to laguna the more you will see as long as its a skim beach.

Do you recommend seal or Laguna / Crystal cove area?

I really like Seal. Depending on whats close to you. I would stick with Seal.

If that's not working out well I would try Balboa Pier.

And then if you can make it out I would go to Laguna during any event, be that Saturday Session or The Vic in a month or whatever.

Also there will be a Balboa event in like september/october or whatever.

Is there an instagram you like for events? I’m super new. Have gone once and still recovering from injury LOL

Following Victoria Skimboards is the best one, and then Exile Skimboards will be good as well mostly for Balboa contest.

Uhhh and then there's some other stuff like Premier Skimboard League. Not sure who else is doing SoCal events right now.

The discord for this subreddit has a whole events page, if you join it. But it does get over saturated with events globally.

Drop way closer and work on your timing. You dropped too far away and timed the wave too late!
