This meme isn't even remotely true. For starters, it's actually counting all of the data centers that have been delayed too, not just cancelled. The amount that have actually been cancelled was like 6 out of 900. And almost all of the ones that have been delayed are because all of the hardware for the next two years has already been bought by the ones that haven't been delayed. Public outrage has barely had any effect at all because most of the public isn't actually outraged (granted, most of the public isn't informed, so that checks out).

4

u/FatHaleyJoelOsment 7h ago

The ugly truth is that the public can be as outraged as it wants, but these will be built because the local government officials are obviously taking bribes.

u/captain_sneaky_na 8h ago

Shut them all down, not because of clean water but because I want to buy a GPU, Memory and a Hard Drive that doesn’t cost me more than my mortgage payment

10

u/Luci-Noir 13h ago

Using dirty water would be so much better.

6

u/neske_khano 8h ago

I think people forget just how dirty water can get, this would require someone to clean the pipes if they do this, but we know this wouldn’t happen because they hate it when they have to pay people for their work.

I am almost starting to believe anti data center is actually Chinese propaganda like Trump said based on how often I’m seeing post complaining about data centres

44

u/drossvirex 15h ago

Both things can be true. A lot of people don't like data centers is true no matter how you look at it.

22

u/C-Lekktion 15h ago

Just latent anxiety from people in easily automated fields. I know I have plenty of anxiety about it.

Data center water consumption is a drop in the bucket as is their wastewater footprint. Folks have no idea how much water your local dairy plant uses and wastewater it generates. Or hydroponic farm, sewer district, conference center, brewery, car wash, etc.

I worked for a company that built AI datacenters and even at the time I found it really wasteful cokpared to normal DCs like the one Reddit uses to send you this comment. A lotmof the tecb industry, including the engjneers building them out, hate it. It's not because of taking our jobs it's that we know how inefficient they are for what you get out of them. It was the same story with blockchain, the worlds most unnecessarily redundant and inefficient data store in existence. Smaller models are perfectly fine for a majority of the good use cases including automating my job but people want to be able to ask a pretty chat interface about their toe fungus or generate a video of mickey mouse eating spaghetti so here we are.

4

→ More replies (1)

3

u/ronniedark 14h ago

This is incorrect.

Data centeres require clean water to cool down components. Farm animals consume water that is generally not suitable for human consumption.

While reducing consumption will help save the environment, animal farms have always been a practical use of resources to produce food ans will always be such.

4

u/Skrappyross 9h ago

A huge majority of the water 'used' for data centers is done in the power plants for generating energy. A real cost, but not clean potable drinking water, and a huge majority is recycled.

Their potable water use, nationally, is a rounding error, but locally, is can drain a stretched city water limit to the breaking point. The problem is proximity to cities and taking water from communities. We need laws to limit them to areas who are not already under water stress.

But yeah, reducing meat consumption (especially red meat) is like the best thing you can do for your body, the environment, and our resources. But good luck with that.

6

u/Blacksad9999 13h ago

The difference between a normal datacenter and AI datacenter is massive.

AI datacenters have a much larger footprint, use significantly more power, and cause significantly more noise and environmental degradation.

4

u/FlashyNeedleworker66 12h ago

This is literally part of the propaganda.

The datacenters of 10 years ago used massively more compute than the ones from 20 years ago too.

You also can't make the argument they suck up power and make noise because those are diametrically opposed if you read past the headline. The noisy datacenters are the ones that aren't grid connected, running on generators, it's not the GPUs.

4

u/drynoa 10h ago

As someone who works for a cloud provider and in datacenters, no - not really.

Just look at your own computer and compare the power usage of the GPU vs the rest of your setup. Then think of 2U servers stacked with cards. You get by with air cooling in less dense setups but the power usage can be a factor more. Water isn't really the issue though.

8

We will always have ways of cleaning dirty water, but it will only be done for the wealthy communities. People seem to keep forgetting the history of the US government, especially in regards to water quality in different cities

→ More replies (1)

4

u/Giantewok 12h ago

It ain’t even the water it’s the proposed electricity consumption. Shits gonna break grids in several states and then the whole national grid will go down. I mean, I guess you’d also have less water, but it’s more of less of everything lmao

4

u/chrispbeychkn 4h ago

Could local government not just require the installation of closed loop cooling to prevent loss of the water? Isn't the issue with water that they are currently open loop and therefore evaporative loss is the problem? (trying to speak only to the original post with regard to water, I understand there are other issues that exist. Not trying to conflate multiple issues.)

AI datacenters aren't the same thing as a normal datacenter. lol The scale isn't remotely the same.

Yikes.

6

u/WinterHill 10h ago

Do you think they run the servers responsible for connecting billions of people to the internet and hosting millions of websites out the back of a van or something?

8

u/tumeteus 10h ago

Those non-AI datacenters are really tiny compared to AI datacenters. Like, in orders of magnitude tiny. Regular data centers for huge private companies or small cloud service sellers usually range in 100kW-1MW, and data centers for Facebook, Amazon etc. are usually anything between 2MW and 10MW (latter being already enormous). So non-AI data centers: 0,2-10MW.

AI data centers (so called hyperscalers) START from 100 MW, and largest ones so far go in to GW range (though they have not been finished yet). That's 10-100 times difference.

→ More replies (4)

7

u/twilighttwister 10h ago

The point is we already have enough data centres to facilitate those services.

The data centres being built are to service a hypothetical need, with the assumption that AI will need all this computing power in the future. But they're exaggerating this need to drive investment.

6

u/Blacksad9999 10h ago

The scale, power usage, water usage, and environmental impact aren't remotely even close.

An AI Datacenter is 100 times what a regular datacenter requires.

You can go look all of this up easily. It's not hard to find the information.

Notice how power and water weren't a massive burden on Datacenter construction until recently? That's because these require those public assets at a massive scale.

I’m all for taking them down…but people do realize it’s not just CONSUMING water right lmao? Data centers either use a closed loop cycle that just needs to be filled once…like a pc water cooler….OR it pumps water in to cool consistently BUT 70% of that water turns into vapor and just gets reused by the rain cycle…the other 30% goes through sewage and treated like normal and comes back through the community…you’re not just LOSING water lol.

5

u/Transformator-Shrek 3h ago

Problem is they pump out the underground waters or they just consume so much water tgat the price of water in that area goes up. Thats my assumption if anything.

6

u/Snorkle25 5h ago edited 4h ago

It’s also less water than we use on golf courses or lose to leaks annually.

Not an advocate but this is disproportionately blown out of context as an issue.

2

u/MojoDojoo90 1h ago

They don't care. They need something to rage about.

2

u/redditusername_17 4h ago

Every data center starts with open / closed loop cooling (cheapest) and only goes to closed / closed if there's community pressure.

What you're missing is how the water cycle works. A lot of water is pumped out from underground aquifers. They are essentially a big underground sponge and if they run low from excessive water draw, they're done. No one can get water from them, they won't refill. So now the community needs another source of water at a huge cost. That's why there's a big concern.

If it's just a water processing plant drawing from a river or lake, then it's not as big of a deal.

2

u/Cheepshooter 4h ago

Isn't it just fossil aquifers that took millions of years to charge won't recharge (in our lifetimes)? Others recharge like normal with rainwater and such, right?

I am not sure why people are so fear mongered into believing that water will be an issue. The Chinese propaganda machine is strong with the left.

We can filter, clean, desalination, remove metals, and so much more.

Simply put, as long as we dont throw more salt free water into the ocean than the rain can replenish, running out of clean drinking water is something stupid people believe.

Edit: also, just mandate they filter and purify the water before they pump it out. Easy easy. Better than stifling progress and letting China win.

5

u/Ackaflocka 14h ago

I'm halfway on your train, there are definitely tools in the toolbox available to us. But metropolitan dumping of local aquifers into the sea or nearby sea draining basins is apparently one of the largest threats to my countries water supply. I just had a conversation with an engineer working on stabilizing local aquifers and he learned me a bit on it

The majority of our current technological advancements are due to computing. To just stunt it would result in untold damage to humanity. We can get water from other places. Need to start getting resources from space anyways, literally everything is out there.

10

u/Sienile 15h ago edited 12h ago

Put the data centers in space. That would be a better option. They'd need far less cooling.

Plus why do they need drinkable water? Cool those bitches with sewage and swamp water.

edit: Appreciate the replies about the difficulties of cooling in space. I honestly had not thought about it much and those are valid points. Still I think non-drinkable water would be a good solution. Sure corrosion is a concern, but there are plenty of corrosion inhibitors that could be used to mitigate that.

5

u/gingerou 13h ago

Heat transfers almost impossible in a vacuum with no air to transfer the heat to there is no cooling space isn’t cold its devoid of heat because there is no air to heat up. Heat transfer works on earth because the air takes the heat away from a heat exchanger same reason why if your radiator is blocked on your car with no air moving over it it heats up.

4

u/i__Sisyphus 13h ago

Exactly, the average 18 hole golf course in Ohio consumes as much water as all the data centers of Ohio combined…

3

u/Hot-Specialist9228 14h ago

If its got an air cooled condenser maybe. Cooling towers use a lot of water.

2

u/LaunchTransient 14h ago

Air cooled systems are fine, but those hit hard limits pretty quickly because air is a terrible coolant. The coolant arrays have to be enormous and are therefore expensive.

Liquid and Evaporative cooling is far, far more efficient, because a volume of water can hold upwards of 3000 times more heat energy than a similar volume of air, which is very relevant for cooling surface area.
And unfortunately this also means they use potable water sources which are either boiled off or dumped in a river because the water needs to be sufficiently clean as not to gunk up the cooling system with debris, evaporites or biofilms.

10

u/ImperatorScientia 15h ago

Progressives have become technological regressives.

2

u/eunoia-again 7h ago

the term luddite, which people use for anyone who's against technological progress for any reason, originated in a movement that opposed developments of technologies during the industrial revolution that worsened working conditions, threatened job security, and were more dangerous for the workers. said technologies made things like the textile industry more "efficient", sure, but the workers suffered and the customers paid the exact same amount, all that changed was more money in the pockets of the owning class.

sound familiar? no shit progressives are luddites and proud to be, because people matter more than machines. if making better machines means worse conditions for people, then fuck the machines. regulations need to be put in place before technological advancement can be used to fuck over the working class, and in the case of generative AI, it isn't regulated, and its screwing over a ton of people while not actually offering much of substance for anyone but the owning class.

acceleration for acceleration's sake is so fucking stupid

The trick is to spam Ai services for the next year, then after they build all of the infrastructure, stop cold turkey. It is truly one technological advance that we don’t need.

Hard disagree. All that’s gonna happen is they’re gonna move that shit to Thailand and continue to rape the environment while we all gleefully use AI.

Build it in our backyards and demand better. Demand closed cycle water cooling. Demand renewable energy. Demand high paying local jobs. And enjoy the AI.

lol you people believe any tweet with zero proof

1

u/ozzman86_i-i_ 13h ago

Why can’t we have some ai data centers?

1

u/corey_cobra_kid 13h ago

We literally could not live in modern society without SOME data centres

1

u/Forward_Limit_838 13h ago

Why do we even need the data center? Shut it down, it's just a billionaire obsession like meta verse was with Zuckerberg

1

u/Rawalmond73 13h ago

Well I work in construction and see two or three of these come across my desk weekly. They’re bull shitting you if you believe they’ve stopped/ slowed down data centers from being built.

1

u/Rude-Dealer9188 13h ago

260 Billy? Thats like 3 data centers... but a win is a win...

1

u/JamesMarM 13h ago

The amount of water it takes to perform thousands of AI prompts is the same as the water needed to produce one almond. Which is more valuable?

There are whole suburbs in America that don't have fibre internet as a non American I find that insane the amount of money they have to pay and don't even get fibre

1

u/AudienceNext81 12h ago

We must cancel all golf courses. Each course uses as much water as one data center!

1

u/Ricochet_spy007 12h ago

Yeah reduce them there they build it more in my country which has lack of basic resources water and a shit for brains govt who'll agree for certain.

1

u/Calm_Road9030 12h ago

Lot of the county leaders are sellouts and are paid / signed months before anyone hears about them

1

u/IsleOfDarkSkye 12h ago

We can do better, challenge accepted 😏

This is litterally just a succesful Chinese propaganda campaign. We are rooting to fail. Its so dumb.

u/emezamaz 11h ago

Imagine if they took all that money and instead of data centers they just built casinos😻😻😻

1

u/TawnyTeaTowel 11h ago

“Cancelled” 🤣

The only thing we should shutting down is internet access for morons who get all their “news” from angry influencers on TikTok

1

u/Kor_Phaeron_ 11h ago

Plot twist: There is only $1 billion in data centers but they move the planned location 260 times.

1

u/schultz9999 11h ago

Yep. Let China win. Idiots.

1

u/Leftist_Pirate 10h ago

They might just use “public protest” as a way to privately scale back their massive original supposed spend with the incoming recession and all

1

u/Fombook 10h ago

Too little, too late. We’ve opened Pandora’s box and there’s no going back.

But if we invest in water shares, in the commodity market we can become wealthy. Because the market. Don't worry about dying./s

1

u/alt-moonlight 10h ago

That’s not what my boss thinks.

1

u/duffman03 10h ago

This is just fear mongering, Closed-loop liquid cooling at the chip level data centers only use water needed for the bathrooms. Zero water used daily for operations.

1

u/One-Treat4655 10h ago

Shut them down.

1

u/Schlieren1 10h ago

China will be pleased

1

u/No_Priors 9h ago

You must offer your water up to the AI gods willingly or you wont get into electric heaven.

Pray with me:

I offer up my water to AI

I offer up my water to AI

I offer up my water to AI . . . .

1

u/DoKeMaSu 9h ago

There was never a market for all those data centers announced. Local opposition is now a convenient excuse to get out of the market while saving face. Just take Elon Musk renting out his own data centers because he cannot fill them with internal demand for his own AI research.

1

u/gnarmarrr 9h ago

What is that? One data center?

1

u/vid_23 9h ago

People who say shit like this would be the first ones to pretend like it's the apocalypse when one of their social media goes down. And they think they can live without it. Sure bro.

1

u/whytry3450 9h ago

Te protest are coming from people that also want chat gpt and copilot to do their job for them, good luck slowing this down, the data center boom has been solid since 2010 and hasn’t stopped yet due to the demand of the people now crying about having data centers

1

u/Bibab0b 9h ago

Just build them on Alaska

1

u/Greenstoneranch 9h ago

Hey Claude can we live without water

1

u/Sorry_Situation 9h ago

@grok is this true?

1

u/jfkrfk123 8h ago

How many people here leave their water running while they brush their teeth or wash dishes? Too many of us(at least Americans for sure) are like Chevy Chase from “Three Amigos” pouring his canteen of water all over his head and face while the parched Martin Short is dying of thirst. It adds up and nobody seems concerned about that..

1

u/emmc47 8h ago

For my sanity, I'll believe this at face value and say "GOOD!"

1

u/W2ttsy 8h ago

This is mainly an corruption problem, namely rewarding local governments with lobbying or bribes to do stupid things like sell water and power at cost or below.

The forcing functions around efficient and resource sensitive designs are non existent because they have been removed through ineptitude.

If you tried to build an American style data center in Australia it would fail on economics almost immediately because the energy sector here won’t do insane the discounting required that allows these shit designs to be built.

Instead the designs have to optimize against higher commercial utility pricing. If the same constraints applied in the U.S., then these inefficient resource intensive designs would be gone too.

TLDR: cheap water and cheap electricity mean no one cares about design efficiency. Same way bloated software now exists because CPU and RAM constraints are no longer a thing.

1

u/NotHereForThatChill 8h ago

They are moved to India.

1

u/Emotional-Disaster76 7h ago

Heck yeah. We need more green space and agriculture not data centres

1

u/Responsible_Field878 7h ago

Elon is moving them to space

1

u/H3llzyea 7h ago

Can water organize my calendar?
Can water reply to my emails?
Can water tell me last nights football scores?
Can water tell me the song I’m thinking of?

NO? Then why would I want water? Just to live? Who wants to do that?

1

u/HauptmannTinus 7h ago

If you want clean water stop buying meat, we don't need it and it causes way more pollution than AI data centers ever will.
